View Full Version : Homeless Again...

Sailor Steve

Well, it happened. I didn't have any steady income for far too long, so my friend and I got evicted from the place we were at.

The good news is I started a cool job two months ago, working at one of the best used and rare bookstores anywhere - Sam Weller's in downtown Salt Lake City. I worked there part time for a few weeks, and then they needed me full time. So now I sell books and talk about books and get discounts on books.

The bad news is that it was too little too late. We were far enough behind in the rent that they didn't care that we could now afford to pay - they just wanted us gone. The other bad news is that while I love the job, it's only minimum wage, so saving up money takes a lot longer.

The good news is that this time around we can afford to make plans. We're staying in a cheap motel until we can get into the homeless shelter, and once there I'll be able to save up enough money to get a car and a place.

And the band is still playing, so I'm not complaining at all.

Damn, DAMN, DAMN!

Pardon the language, but I just got seriously disgusted with the US Postal System!

Part of not having an official residence is the problem of recieving mail. So I go to the post office to rent a PO box, and find out they have a new policy, and a new application to fill out.

Two forms of ID are required (nothing new there).

1) Picture ID. Driver's license. Check.

2) Passport, Visa or Green Card. I'm a US citizen, so I don't have any of those.

3) Proof of homeowner's insurance. Nope, don't own a home, or I wouldn't be homeless.

4) Proof of car insurance. Nope, don't own a car.

That's about it. Curiously, they won't take a Social Security card as a form of ID, and I don't have a copy of my birth certificate.

Bottom Line: Even though I have the money, they refuse to rent me a Post Office Box. I have to use General Delivery until I can sort it out. Needless to say I wrote a polite but angry e-mail to the Post Office, and today I'm calling their complaint line (at least they have one!).

Otherwise things are going alright. I won't say great, but only because I can't use my own computer right now, and can't play SH3 and 4. On the other hand, once I'm in the shelter I'll be able to save up for a car, a place, a new computer, band equipment, and all the other important things.:rotfl2:

I think Kinkos or the UPS Store has mail boxes to rent.

Sailor Steve
11-05-09, 03:00 PM
Maybe, but the advantage to a PO box is that the Post Office keeps them in the outer lobby, which is open 24/7.

I'll get this worked out somehow.

AVGWarhawk
11-05-09, 03:07 PM

Is it me or does this sound like discrimination? It seems they want to know where you live and if you cant prove it then your SOL. Isn't the whole reason of getting a PO box is because you need a common place for mail to arrive? That sucks...

Well, I recently got some good news and some bad news.

The Good News: The cheap motel was indeed starting to get not-so-cheap, when my band's drummer broke up with his girlfriend and suddenly needed help paying the rent. I moved into a spare room last Wednesday and it will help us both out a lot. I now have rides to and from practice, as well as a place to set up my own computer. I haven't done that yet but I'm using his, which resides in a back room.

The Bad News: The bookstore job isn't working out as well as I'd hoped. I love it but the big bosses decided I wasn't exactly the fit they were looking for. I'll be out of work at the end of this month. At least I'm paid up through the end of the year, so I should be able to come up with enough money to stay for now, if not actually get ahead.

Easy come, easy go.

I'm aware of the possibility that it's the other way around - the calmness and acceptance might be the cause rather than just a way of coping.

what types of jobs are you qualified for and are you willing to relocate?
None and no. That's the quick joke answer. I've been warehousing for most of my life, but I'm getting to an age where bending and lifting are a pain (figuratively and literally). I'm sort of okay at research, but my background is limited. I have a lot of knowledge, but teaching is out due to lack of formal schooling.

I might actually relocate for a job that seemed right to me, but right now I'm also reluctant to let my musical friends down. It's a real dilemma.

This could be a brave front put on for this forum, in reality Steve may be quite depressed, I'm sure I would be!
Again, it's just the opposite. It took me awhile to find out, but I've suffered from depression most of my life. I'm manic-depressive actually, and I think part of the reason for my ease in dealing with it is simply that I'm in an up phase right now. I could just as easily be curled up in my bed and not talking to anybody, if past behaviour is any indication. We'll see how tomorrow goes.

The part that bugs me the most is the realization that I've had several opportunities for a real career, and passed on all of them. Now I'm at an age when I should be looking forward to retirement, and instead I'm looking for another entry-level job. How's that for depressing?

This psychologist would have been a bloody bastard telling you that in the first on a public board, right? ;) It speaks for yourself that you imagine this possibility all by yourself. I hope you are given the opportunity to make something of this insight. The grim truth about life is that effort and investment alone do not decide our fate, but that we also depend on having a little bit of luck. In this meaning I wish you good luck indeed.

There ought to be something suitable with some military establisment, maybe dealing with military historical research. Hey Steve, sorry to hear about the rough road. Been in a similar situation myself, though I'm only in my 30's. Been a mover for the last dozen years, and like you said it's beginning to be a "pain." Always been able to just get by, but now that my knees and back are wrecked, I've got zero skills besides knowing how to pick things up. Lame.

I've also dealt with depression my whole life, and for me, being a "know-nothing mover" doesn't help at all. Being stuck in a rut is depressing, and yet they're hard to get out of because they're so comfortable and farmiliar.

About a year ago, I ruined my back, and though I can still "get by", the clock is ticking as to for how much longer. Anyways, what I did, and what I recommend is to go to college and get some kind of degree. There's all kinds of financial aid out there, some free - some not, but even the ones you have to pay back have decent payment plans and interest rates.

Go back to school, Steve. Find something you love or something you've always been interested in and take some classes, maybe even get a degree. Me, I've always been fascinated by machining and tool making, so I'm going to a community college and in another year I'll have an associates degree in machine manufacturing technology.

With my part time moving job and school loans, I am just barely able to make it, but I am making it. In a years time I'll have a degree and hopefully an entry level job making &16-18 an hour. Same as what I'm making now, but that's entry level vs. 12 years experience, and I'm good with that. Two and a half years in school will cost me about $15,000, but you get 10 years to pay it back. Gonna be about $250 a month & I'll be able to swing that.

Also, going back to school has really helped with my depression. It's amazing how good you can feel when you prove to yourself that you are capable of improvement, especially when you're doing it for yourself.

Anyways Steve, from being in a similar situation, that's my advice to you. Go back to school, and find a skill/trade you can love. That, and stop listening to the voices that say "you can't". Drown them out with "I WILL"

The longest journey begins with a single step. Much love, and good luck brother.

You cannot be terminated without reason.Like Mookie said, in many states there's a thing called "At Will Employment".

As much as it sucks in this situation and although I used to think that the concept was wrong, awhile back a conversation with my neighbor and good friend changed my perspective.

He owns a Temp service, and our families met up for drinks one night recently. Somehow the concept of At Will Employment came up. I was squarely in the camp of employers needing a reason to fire someone. He was in favor of current "At Will" laws.

He gave me a great example supporting it. Essentially, he had a sales manager working for him that was scheduled to attend a meeting with a very lucrative potential client. On that day, said manager didn't show up, and it was later determined that said manager had found another job and simply decided to quit without informing anyone.

Said manager's move possibly cost my neighbor in the area of over $1 million annually.

His point was this: the employee had NO legal obligation WHATSOEVER to retain his business as an employer, even to the point likely losing a massive sum of money (which would have added to the bottom line and have paid dividends by way of raises and bonuses to his other employees). Why then should the employer have ANY legal obligation to the employee?

I happen to agree with him.

It's too bad that, in some situations it harms one of our own, but At Will Employment is, in my opinion, only fair.

Sorry to digress and take this conversation off-topic. Just had an opinion I wanted to share.

Btw, Steve - if you have some contact information and some basic background you can PM me, that same neighbor is affiliated with companies in your area and may be willing to help. I know you never ask for anything, but please, PM me your situation and I'll see if I can help you out. No promises, but no good man should stand alone in his time of need.

Never give up ... always keep looking, but sometimes you got to look at the chart on the chart table.

You say you have friends in Salt Lake, a bonding, a connection so to speak.

Fine, but what keeps you in Salt Lake City, Utah ... Fear of failure?

It's too cold there Steve ...

Find a friend that will ship your stuff for you to you when you get a job:

A: in a warmer location like San Diego

B: YMCA it till you have a job

C: Contact VA hospital for a ID card and a check up

D: Apply for VA Vietnam pension fund (it's for vets that served during the Vietnam war that can't get their act together after they came home) (you know for killing so many people left some of them a little crazy, but the 3 billion dollar fund is for everryone that served) as a homeless person.

Do it at any VA admin city with your DD-214 form

E: Never give up ... faith and fear don't go together

Out of these three faith, hope and love ... love is the strongest bond

If we were having lunch I would say the same thing ... hang in there and get yourself to a US Navy friendly city with vets that care. :yeah:

Grew up in L.A. I like Utah.

B: YMCA it till you have a job
Not much different from being in the Homeless Shelter. Been there, done that. I have a place for now.

C: Contact VA hospital for a ID card and a check up
I've had my VA card for 20 years now. I get checked there every six months.

D: Apply for VA Vietnam pension fund (it's for vets that served during the Vietnam war that can't get their act together after they came home) (you know for killing so many people left some of them a little crazy, but the 3 billion dollar fund is for everryone that served) as a homeless person.
I've looked into that. Actually it's for victims of Agent Orange. I don't qualify.

Well, it happened. I found a new place, but after two months my flaky new roommate got himself (and me) evicted. I spent the last two nights on a cot in what they call the 'Overflow Shelter'. Not too bad really - it beats living outside.

All my stuff is safe in storage. The only downside is that I can't play any games. I can still work on the Ship Names mod here at the library, and that's what I spent most of my time on anyway. That, and the band, which is still going, so there may be some money there sometime, but not soon.

The biggest aggravation is that I could have done all this two months ago and had a lot of money in the bank. Instead it's happening now and I spent most of it. Oh well, fair return for it - I had my own room for two more months.

I have a couple of applications in at different places, and the VA Pension might be available for me after all. Won't know for awhile though.

I am also in a bad situation Steve.
After 20 years of doing a skilled job I find that the skilled job I can do is no longer needed. I am now unemployed trying to find if I can do something else.

I commend your positive attitude.
Good luck mate.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

If anything is going to get you through this dark time it is this.

I have found that sometimes it is good enough just to know that you have people thinking about you and rooting for you in your darkest times.
Sure, objectively you know that it can't possibly make any difference.
But subjectively, I think it makes all the difference in the world.
You are not alone.
Good luck mate.

That's why I always thought porn would be a good career.

In porn, unlike the legitimate theater, there are no such things as small actors, only small parts. :wah:

Not at all. I spent a year-and-a-half in and out of shelters, ending two years ago when I got into a place. Made it work for awhile. I had a thread going that whole time too.

Anyway, I have a roof and a couple hundred roommates, so I'll survive. And I have Subsim, so I have lots to read (not to mention an endless supply of books from the library) and plenty to keep me busy.

Now I'm off to dinner.

Someone mentioned porn (those performers are usually more or less naked), and you once mentioned you're playing in a band from time to time. It just reminded me of that crazy guy in New York City, the half-naked cowboy who plays in the streets. I don't know if he earns a lot of money, but he sure got some attention that way.

Maybe you need to have a great idea like he did, combining it with the music, which you love. I don't know how willing you are to move to another city if that's what it would take to become succesfull (whatever that means). But maybe you just need to think in new directions. Not indicating that you should be a porn perfomer while playing the guitar though... :har:

I guess this needs an update. As of February 1 I've been on the streets again. The 'friend' who invited me to stay with him in December took my money and then didn't pay the rent.

I'm surviving. Obvious, since I'm coming to the library and posting every day. The band is still recording (at home - there's no money in it) and I'm getting unemployment while I look for work.

Well, I've left this hanging for two months, and things are improving - sort of.

I still haven't found a job I can do, but just a couple of days ago I got a call from a VA rep. She wanted to know when I was ready to move.

Move? I've been living in the homeless shelter for almost three months now, and I had no idea what she was talking about. Well, when I first met her back in November apparently she put me on a list for VA housing and I just plain forgot.

So today I was placed in a program for displaced veterans and moved into what is essentially a hotel room. Small, but it has everything I need (including internet) and it's a whole lot better than having 400 roommates.

So I should be online for myself in a few days and not have to come to the library any more. And cook my own food. And sleep in or stay out late if I need to.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to get all my stuff (mostly 40-or-so boxes of books) moved from one storage unit to a much cheaper one, and then get my computer set up. I was thinking about having to pay for a satellite online setup, but now all I have to buy is a usb wi-fi thingie, because they have free wireless internet. By Sunday I should be up and running, but that might be delayed by a day or two as it's been 20 degrees faranheit colder than usual here and snowing of-and-on.

I do have a sister a couple of years older than you, and a brother about your age. Actually I spent four years a decade ago working in a book distributor's warehouse. Any books that were damaged were written out of the system and employees could take them, the horrible limit being no more than three books per day. Once I was in the returns department I found out I could write off any book I pleased, so I got a bunch of brand-new stuff for free. I would still be with them, but in 1998 the parent company moved them to Charlottesville, Virginia, and they didn't take me.

I would love to still work there, and I'd love to live there. The company's address is now on James Madison Drive.

If either or both of you come to the subsim meet this year Mrs. August and I might get a chance to show off our personal library to some fellow book lovers.

I sometimes want to cry for all the books I've had to part with over the years, some due to space constraints but a lot of them lost to water damage when two different basements where I stored things at different times got partially flooded.

My high school library put out about a dozen boxes of "discards" the year before I graduated. Guess who lugged them all home? Me, 3 books at a time, lol.

Somehow I've managed to squeeze 8 "full size" bookcases into the living room and bedroom of my very small apartment. Some of the shelves don't hold books, but most do, and they're slowly but surely filling up again.

I once had someone walk into my apartment for the first time, look around, and say, "Soooooo... I take it you're a reader?"

To which the only appropriate answer is, "Not really," said with as straight a face as possible. :O:

Well you got us beat as we only have about six full size cases worth of books, but we do have some real good ones though and a decent selection of topics. The latter being mostly due to Mrs. Augusts much wider tastes in literature than mine, which are mostly military related.

I have two cases of novels and one of other non-novel "literature" like poetry, drama, lit-crit, etc. But mostly I have non-fiction, I hardly even read fiction any more (unless it's a Terry Pratchett book  or I need a break from "reality.") Probably a third of the space taken up by novels is Terry Pratchett books, lol. I've given away or sold or traded probably three times the number of novels I still have. Most of the ones I've kept are either "classics" or related to something I have a non-fiction interest in as well. Or they're books I'm emotionally attached to, like the ragged paperback copy of Moby Dick I read in high school and won't get rid of even though I have a nice hardback copy now. (All my notes are in there! I thought some very deep and important thoughts at 16! :O:)

Most of the non-fiction is archaeology/history/biography, religion/mythology/folkore, or psychology-related. Some martial arts books and a few math/science books.

Someday, I will start reading them as fast as I acquire them. :D

Not the greatest arrangement, especially for a man with so many books, but hey, it's something right? I actually live in a room I'm renting that's about 9x9ft myself, and it's been pretty tolerable.
