Hi Folks,

Sorry for the prolonged absence but a large slice of RL got in the way in the form of illness. Anyways, a friend of mine emailed me some photo's the other day, claiming they were probably previously unseen images of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The story is they've were taken by a crew member of USS QUAPAW ATF-11O on a Brownie Box camera in which they stayed for 69 years until being recently discovered in a footlocker and subsequently developed.

My first thought was that undeveloped film would fade after all that time, but my own experience has shown that the stuff keeps its image for at least 20 years. I much know that for a fact.

Quality-wise, they're clear and definitely in Brownie Box format (I still have a working model sat on the shelf next to me right now).

All of that said, being a Limey, I wouldn't dare pass final judgment on what could be a series of deeply significant images. I thought I'd respectfully leave that to the fellow countrymen of the victims of the attack,

I've uploaded them on http://www.flickr.com/photos/pd51/sets if you fancy having a look at them and give me an opinion. I guess my questions are:
1) has anyone ever seen them before?
2) Do you think they're genuine?

Cheers,

Knip

Yup, they are genuine, but unlike the description, they werent "forgotten" anywhere, but have actually been in the archives since 1940s. They just havent gotten as much publicity as the other PH photos.

There was another thread on this not long ago.

Yes, they are old pictures, and most if not all of them have been available through sources, including books, ever since the raid itself. I'm familiar with most of them. Nothing at all new or hidden or lost here.

OK, I'm convinced. Sorry to have wasted your time guys. I've taken them down and replaced them with something I feel is more appropriate.

Snopes had an article debunking the internet e-mail campaign that these were recently developed Pearl Harbour photos a few years back. But no one seems to have an explanation as to why they were being claimed as such. The theories seem to range from discrediting FDR and his policies to propping up flagging support for the war in Iraq. Who knows?
