Captain's log, U-33

October 10, 1940
Grid BF19

I am now captain of the luckiest U-boat in the world.

We had spent most of the previous day and night getting into position ahead of a convoy reported to our northeast. We failed to correctly guess their speed, and ended up several kilometers behind them.
So we had sprinted ahead, and finally were in position by midnight. Thankfully it was a clear night, with a good moon, and impossibly calm waters for this time of the year.

This time around I decided to try a new tactic - we would strip the convoy of its escorts, and as it was heading out to sea and was already out of aircraft range, there would be nothing to stop us from picking it apart as we pleased.
So, the first torpedo we fired was directed at the lead destroyer, who, in the darkness, apparently failed to sight the wake left by our steam torpedo.

As soon as it impacted I ordered a dive to 100 meters, and was in the middle of lowering the periscope when I spotted an odd-looking cargo ship nestled in the middle of the freighters and merchantmen.

I quickly ordered a climb back up to periscope depth, and by the time we were there the convoy had moved a good deal closer, and had zig-zagging as well. I very nearly had a heartattack and grabbed Albert by what I thought was his shoulder. (It turned out to be his neck)

"Mein Gott!! It's a bloody battleship," I almost screamed at the crew, who thought I really was having a heartattack.

We quickly setup a firing solution for the remaining forward tubes after confirming it was indeed a battleship - the Warspite no less, according to our manual.

In a few moments our volley was on its way, two steamers set at fast and medium, and our last electric eel. I ordered a dive to 100 meters, with a right-hand spiral. I knew it would put a devilish strain on the helmsmen, but I was determined to tell this story to everyone back at the club.

I waited tensely as the first two eels either missed or failed to detonate, and then gave up all hope of the third making contact. I was in the middle of planning our escape when suddenly an explosion sounded, practically right over us. I can only presume our last torpedo made contact, as less than a minute later the sound operator reported a ship breaking up and sinking.

Our celebration stopped cold as soon as it had begun as the sound of a dying warship came through the hull quite clearly. I very nearly had another heartattack as for a moment I wondered if I had put my command underneath our target... That would have been a truly ironic demise.

In any case our descent was unhindered by the sinking vessel, but all the way down we could hear the hull breaking up, and the steel twisting and coming apart. I hope I never have to listen to such a mournful sound again.

Several hours later we surfaced to the south of the convoy. The escorts never picked us up, and currently we are racing into position once more. As best as we could tell, there are a scant 2 escorts remaining, and at least a dozen merchants for the taking once the guard dogs are put down.

To be continued... :arrgh!:

Cool story.
I like your writing style. Exactly the right amount of detail to keep my interest high.

*sigh*

It seems I am not destined for greatness... Several hours later, while attacking the convoy the game crashed. :wah:

As I started the patrol over again, I had this (HTTP://WWW.YOUTUBE.COM/WATCH?V=EFACXGIKZFG) song stuck in my head...

Such is the life of a U-bootsman.

So far Patrol #20 (Take 2) is going quite poorly. I've losted seven men (Seven!!!) during two running gunfights with armed merchants, in exchange for a meager ±7000 tons. Seven men! All my qualified watchmen/gunners taken out by 3 ridiculously lucky shots - The first battle was at night, and two hits killed my deck gun crew and soon after my flak gunner, and then another crew killed by a shot from 3000 yards during a daylight action near the Rockall Bank. I would've expected this in 1942 or later, but 1940?

I wonder if this is how the crew of U-56 felt after their failed attack on the Nelson... :nope:

The moment a ship shoots back it's time to dive. Everything else is just to risky.

Alright, here we go again. December 4th at 5:30 in the morning, moving to intercept a convoy... First patrol with my new Type IXB, plus a fairly new crew. Loving the speed on this battlewagon, but we'll see how she does in battle.

Fingers crossed for some juicy targets :arrgh!:

Morale is back up to almost 9000!

Managed to drag the escorts away from the convoy one at a time, and 4 eels later the convoy is defenseless. As I crawled back into the convoy (Each line was spaced several hundred meters apart, plenty of room for my Type IX), I suddenly sighted an Auxiliary Cruiser at the very rear of the convoy... Not quite a prestigious warship, but 13000 tons is 13000 tons :arrgh!:
Sunk a pair of large freighters while I waited for the Aux Cruiser to catch up, and then placed 2 eels under what must've been the magazine as it went down almost instantly.

Now I'm currently on the surface pulling in my external reloads, and darkness is only a few hours away.

Morale is back down about 1000 again

While on the surface and reloading torpedo tubes, I jumped up to the conning tower and promptly received a 'Driver has shut down or somesuch happy news' message and had to restart my computer.

So, Take 2, and this time we're limping home, beaten up but happy, with 23k tons under our belt:
One (1) Auxiliary Cruiser (13500)
One (1) Black Swan Frigate (Not even worth mentioning lol)
One (1) Large Merchant (8900 tons)

I would've gone back for more, but the 2 remaining escorts tore the bejazzus out of my periscopes, and caused minor damage to the diving planes.

But I swear, everytime I get close to accomplishing something awesome in this game my computer decides to break. :nope:

Sounds like you might have overheated your card. Better check that out before you break it for good.

Gizmo might be right. My dad had the exact same problem. Always complaining to me that his sh3 would crash when he is 'winning'. I did much, but could never really find out why his sh3 would occasionally crash. The only thing that seemed wrong was that his video card got quite hot (I think it got up to 82C or something). I've gotten him a new card, but he has yet to try sh3 with it so I dunno if that fixed it.

Personally, I have big problems with nvidia's 190.xx series of drivers. They crash all my games hard. I use an 8800gs. Don't suppose you've tried updating/rolling back drivers?

Can you say that you've ever gone a patrol without crashing? With your current mods?

I can. All my patrols prior to the problem one (This career anyways) have all gone without problems. I don't think I've had problems with overheating before, but I guess there's a first time for anything...

Right now I'm using nVidia's 93.xx series drivers (I'm running an old FX 5200... yeah) as anything newer seems to cause more problems than they're worth. Do you think updating the drivers would help?

There is a program called HWmonitor (http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php). You can run that and leave it running while you play. Later, alt+tab or exit the game and you can see what the highest reported temp of your card was. If the temp shows the same after that for 'current, high, and low', then it most likely isn't working right for you.

Do you have any other games that crash like sh3 does?

On Nvidia's site, I think the latest driver that should work with that card is 175.19. Wouldn't hurt to try it:06: If it does, just roll back to what you got now.
