I am learning allot and I am loving this Sim and the Silent Service history I knew so little about.

Tonight I am 4 hours into my second patrol (Real Time) when I hit a real bad rain storm. Vis is terrible so I go under.

Long story short I pick up a convoy with two escorts on my hydrophone

Using stealth, Rain, Luck and Hydrophone I get in and send a tanker to the bottom.

Then a troop ship, Then another tanker!!!! One target left lining up the shot

(Were sorry silent hunter IV has encountered a problem and has to close)
:o  :damn:

I am really going to love learning this Sim If I don't end up snapping the DVD first!:stare:

Are you sure you have the latest graphics drivers? Something isn't quite right with your computer or installation. Almost nobody has that crashing problem.

I did the same thing last night.. had like 10 ft swells.. stayed surfaced almost to 1500m from the convoy before submerging and taking my shots. The escorts were so confused they ran about 2nm from the convoy searching for me. it was like shooting fish in a barrell. The whole damn convoy went under and I told NO to resume course and speed as the escorts were STILL looking for me a few miles away. *BONG* CTD. The most exciting and productive patrol since (as you said) coming back to SH4 after a long break and all for nothing! GRRR!

For myself I know all drivers are up to date and things are good on the rig, but I am having trouble with the mod I have installed, some little quirks (shiop wont hold speed in TC, ship wont go to periscope until AFTER doing a crash dive... etc)... what mod (if any) are you running.. and what version of SH4. I am running v1.4 and added RFB for 1.4 and nothing else and since doing that I have had a few CTD, wondering if we are suffering the same issues??

My worst thing was self-inflicted. Playing an Asiatic campaign in a pig boat, I found myself in perfect position to sink a carrier in the Java Sea. For those who haven't played the S-boats, you know that is rare great luck. Trouble is, I forgot to reload torpedoes in Surabaya (strange glitch in reload/rearm), so I had no weapons. This was a month ago, and I'm still in a state of shock.

That's very strange to me. One of my greatest praises for SH4 is its stability compared to SH3. The only crash I've ever had was when I loaded conflicting mods, and then it went down right when I tried to load the career. I've never had SH4 crash during a game.

Not bragging, just wondering what the problem could be.

I've had it crash a few times, but I've also had the mod clash problem before. It was a bear figuring it out(lots of installing and un-installing:dead:)

But it runs great now

I feel your pain. Usual a mod clashing problem like Niki stated.

Just the other night I was playing when my wife 'had' to look up something on the internet.

Fine I will just shell out and fire up the browser, look it up, there... happy now?

I brought SH4 back up and continued to play. Not 20 seconds later boom back to desktop.

"Wow" I said to my wife "I cant remember the last time this game actually crashed on me !"

Fourtnatly my parnoia drives me to save early and save often so only a little bit of time was lost. No big deal.

But it did actually strike me as to how stable the game actually is on my system.

Try disabling the 3d sounds in the main.cfg in your save game folder (change the entry: Max3DSounds=0) it helped on my PC, since then I did not have one crash. Crappy AC-97 onboard card here....

Same for me... only time I ever had a crashing problem was when I whipped up a batch of mod soup early on in my SH4 gaming. Never crashed during a game once I got that mess straight.

Hope you figure it out...

One thing I do appreciate about SH4 is that after many many hours, I've only ever had a few CTD's. All things considered, it's pretty dang stable.

Unfortunately I'm having a crashing issue with save games now. I'm running TMO 1.9 and RSRDC 5.04. I'm on my 4th patrol and it's been a very successful one but I can't load the last 4 or 5 save games that I did, not sure if I can load anything earlier than those save games. TMO/SH4 gets to the screen that says "Find Em, Chase Em, Sink Em" and that's where it hangs up. I ctrl-alt-del out and get the "sh4.exe is not responding". Ever seen this before? :06:

Thanks

I haven't had crashing problems since I loaded 1.5 and pointed the shortcut to SH4 instead of gu.exe...Always best to do regardless

Most problems are not enough virtual ram, out of date drivers, background programs, ect...or mod soup.

I did have a terrible crash tonight. I played for 3 hours and had a huge convoy of ships I was preparing to attack. Just got a refit before Surabaya fell. Phone rings so I pause the game and go outside to talk..cell phone...Come back in my PC was off. No save point and I just fought the large java invasion force of over 50 ships and sank many. I yell at my wife...did you cut my PC off......she yelled back...NO.

Had to be "Bear", our little Yorkie Pom mix.....he looks like a little german shep...He's worse than that Marley dog...he pulled the cord out. Had to be him, cause he's always chewing cords....got the fire knock out of him once....He also chewed the cable cord to the TV in half...my Computer Chair, and been eating my wood desk.

Anybody want a dog.

Update your rig if you have the CTD problems. Since I went from the original release to UBM SH4 has been the paragon of reliability. Much, much more than any of my other games.

It's been a while since mine crashed, I just save a lot just in case. Mine would usually crash right after I hit the bridge icon for some reason. The screen would just go blank and you knew what was coming.

"...when I hit a real bad rain storm. Vis is terrible..."

Aside from switching to the bridge when entering a harbor, that one was the most common crash for me. When it didn't crash I got really jerky framerates from rainy days.

OS: Windows XP Media (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2 (2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Model: Dell DXP051
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

Video: Radeon X550 256.0 MB
ATI Driver Version: 6.14.0010.6925

Sound: SigmaTel Audio
sthda.sys Driver Version: 5.10.4823.0000 (English)

That X550 is the main problem, my 8500GT quit working and the only replacement I had was the X550 saved from scrap.

What fixed it, go into the graphics options, turn off volumetric fog. Smooth framerates and no crashes on them rainy nights.

of wining the war. Little is it known that my boat sunk so many ships in Tokyo Bay that the Japanese proposed to surrender on the deck of the Barbarinna in late 1943. Just after the Japanese Prime Minister signed the official surrender document, my system crashed. McArther demanded proof, and I hadn't been able to save the mission. He concluded the "surrender" was a ruse, and that the Japs had sabotage my boat, causing it to "crash." The war goes on. My broken computer, not this one, is in the repair drydock and I am stuck in port reading all of these posts.

When I got my new rig I had the following "anticrash" software installed:

http://www.dachshundsoftware.com/index.html

Now MOST of the time when I get CTD in games (not just SH) it repairs them and I can carry on with the game. I must admit though It's not 100% perfect, but it's better than I used to have.
