View Full Version : How long am I expected to live?

I have recently gotten back into Silent Hunter III (it has been a few years or seems like it). I wanted to challenge myself, so I immediately started a DiD career with 100% realism in 1939 with the 1st Flotilla. I want to know your opinions on how long I'm expected to live.

I had previously been bad with manual target solutions and relied on getting close to my target and guesstimating the amount of lead required.

1st patrol: 1 ship sunk, 2,413 tons. My torpedoes were eaten by this and another ship that failed to sink.

2nd patrol: 4 ships sunk, 9,056 tons

upgraded to type VII-B
3rd patrol: 5 ships, 21,893 tons. Engaged convoy and bagged a T2 tanker, other T2 tanker was damaged.

4th patrol: 4 ships, 16,938 tons. Bagged one ship with deck gun. Heavy seas, rain, and fog afterward. Several dud/missed torpedoes and ships eating more torpedoes.

5th patrol: 12 ships, 60,956 tons. Sunk 3 ships with deck gun before weather factors. Adopted the method of measuring target's speed by measuring time taken for target to travel its own length. Also shooting with zero gyro angle. Lastly, doing keel shots. Successful engagement of convoy, sinking two C2's.

6th patrol: 5 ships, 50,084 tons. Successful engagement of convoy, sinking two T3's and one T2.

March 7th, 1940: Currently in port, awaiting next patrol.
Total tonnage so far: 161,340 tons

One mod used: SH3 Commander

I'm in this war until the end. :salute:
I hope I survive it.

To revisit my main point again: How long do you think I will live in this war?

Kinda new here.

Anyhoo...I'm in the middle of my 9th patrol. Started with a VIIC in March of 41' and I am now in January 42'. Had a few close calls. Was able to shake off a few destroyers in my 8th patrol and got some heavy damage shooting it out with a large merchant in the beginning of the 9th patrol.

I have my realism set at 52%. I am not using map contacts. Strictly using reports and hydrophone contacts. Practicing my skills on using that procedure. Been practicing manual targeting in the Academy...I still need work.

Now that my patrols are in 1942, I expect things to get a little rougher now that the US is in the fray. We'll see.

SB, I'll jump into your "dead pool" and venture a guess you'll hit rough seas in early '44, though things might get dicey in mid-'43. Until then, keep up the good work. :D

And Kip, indeed...welcome aboard. Good luck in your endeavors -- and if you die, take it in stride, and count yourself lucky that unlike real-world sub commanders, you can learn lessons from your own demise! :03:

The key to survival in 1944 and beyond: Avoid convoys. I usually hang out off Brazil or southern Africa and pick off schooners and small fry.

Regardless of the date you'll die as soon as you start taking unnecessary chances.

Define "unneccessary chances" - from the guy whose unfailing motto is "Be More Aggressive"!!!

Two killers. Greed/Gread (en sp?) (too lazy to get the wordbook), and Complacency.

The second has a has a habit of showing up in 42. You begin to get bored by the bad AI and start taking extra risks BUT, right about when this hits you, the AI gets an instant upgrade.

"Hmmm. No action here. Let's go hang out along the beach near Miami."
You are there.
Heavy fog, aircraft with radar, dead.
That ended that IXC carreer for me.

'42 is the killer for me . I always get too bold from earlier successes and the result is KIA in '42.
