View Full Version : What would you like the crew to perform?

Ok, i really hope that the devs will read this and find some very good ideas and add it to the game.

I know the crew will load torpedoes in front of you, which is very cool, but what else?

Personally, i hope we will see a real crash dive!
I mean i hope we will see the crew ''slide along'' the ladder and rush to the bow. (not sure if the ''slide along'' term is correct)

I know you want them to make soup. :03:

Seriously, i'm asking the question, what else should the crew be able to perfom?

Oh yeah i remember that game. That game really was the first game to have 3-d crew members and was way ahead of its time. Shame they never made a b-17 III. You could even see them giving first aid to other crew members and see them working the .50 guns when they jammed.

Yup, and it would be cool to see them carry ammo from the interior, through the conning tower to the deck gun.

I want the crew to automatically draw the plots but only based on my observations.

If I make a crappy observation, well I may not know about it until it is too late.

One of the things I did not like about SH3 was that we were forced to choose one of two extreme alternatives.

1. GPS god's eye view where everything is plotted accurately - unrealistic

2. Totally manual plotting where the player has to do everything - unrealistic (especially when you can't plot when paused)

A happy medium can be reached where the player is responsible for the data acquisition and the computer can handle the graphical plots using player entered information.

Just like in real life where the Kaluen had crew members to help plot but they were blind and totally dependent on the skill of the Kaluen to make the observations.

The computer, in this case, would simulate the crew in that it would be highly skilled and fast at plotting mechanics but restricted to what the player (Kaluen) told it.

Oh and I think that before every single attack, the player must walk through the boat and manually ask each crew member how they liked the soup! :D

LOL! and the option to click the cook and select different kind of soup and then ask how they liked the other soup!

You're quite right.

And i read somewhere (i think it was on uboat.net) that it was the duty of the 1st officer to perform surface night attact (under captain supervision of course), we can see it in Das Boot.

Would be cool if this could be reflected in the game with a certain level of uncertainty depending on the officer skill and experience.

The good news is that crew performance seems to have been a major target of the devs.

The bad news is that they won't be performing The Hoochie Woochie.

If they can have the proper crew member at the proper station, and he performs his job, I'll be very happy and surprised.

Quartermaster/"Helmsman" at the plotting table.
Seaman on the helm, with an option to place the junior Quartermaster there during General Quarters.

I'll bet the devs have got it all covered already.
Confidence.

nope, but to do it right it would "have to" include increased co2 levels and smoke, poor visability along with systems damage so they probably didnt want to go down that road

I wouldn't mind the crew performing a bit of Cirque du Soleil to keep me entertained why travelling to/from the hunting ground.

Failing that, perhaps a bit of Richard Wagner, say Der fliegende Holländer or Die Walküre, just to suck up to Herr Hitler ("My dear Adolf, the crew really excelled with Act III last night, you would have loved it!").

Seriously though, I doubt I'll be looking at them more than once anyway. They could be standing there with their arms outstretched for all I care (wait, they already do that from time-to-time in SH3! The world is good).

Oh, one other thing, I want more casual interaction. I don't want to hear a formal "jawohl Herr Kaleun" everytime I issue an order.

i wish to see radio operator, working with enigma, then perhaps walking over close to me, decoding , and manually passing me the radio message. Maybe big if, a crew member could aproach me personally after say depth charge evasion and asked to be excused from temp duties as to shaken to approach an officer, giving the capt the supreme power !! just a thought...

I really would like to see terror in my crew faces while being depth charged.

After a long and hard patrol, I would like to see them with long beards, and dirty, and sweat.

Having my chief officer taking his cap off for some seconds to wipe the sweat out of his forehead is also very welcome.

Although I am a little leery of the RPG aspects of SH5, It would be nice that during a depth charge attack that the Kaluen could walk through the sub and have an effect on morale depending on the reputation of the Kaluen.

Excellent idea!

That's a problem with simulations, NPC are ofenly acting like robots.

There's a lot of improvement that can be done here.

In the RPG game Oblivion there was a mod that made whatever NPCs were in the vacinity dance while music played. :haha: You could also create your own characters with their own dialog (with voice acting), temperament, etc.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING !!! (... for me)

The sub. localization has to be updated by doing surface during night for stars recognition by the nav. officer.

Then an offset on the localization should increase day after day if no regular update.

for instance a circle which become bigger and bigger with the supposed localization of the sub...

I want see the guy on the deck with its sextan !

this would be great

with respect to the "terror in my crew faces" im kinda thinking its one of those things they are better off NOT trying to do :hmmm: because it could look stupid and we might get some bug eyed looking crew if not done well when they tried to express that surprised, scared, or terrified look.

your answer is in your own post, "one on a sub can kill you realy fast"

its a more added realism thing and since flooding and leaks are there it feels like the rare occassional electrical fire should be as well even though making it work correctly isnt easy and probably why it wasnt done in the game as i mentioned in my other post

I agree, to some extent.

I think some kind of panic is better then a crew doing NOTHING while being depthcharged. Seems like they just don't care, bunch of robots.

Kills the immersion.

yep, maybe moving around quickly or frequent head movements but with the faces i have no confidence ubi will do them correctly for budget reasons and the details are so small scale.

it would be nice to see the crew move based on what you do like a fps so you walk up to them and they get out of your way thing.

lets not have the robot repeating motion thing i agree, to me i would rather them NOT move if all they are doing is to keep waving the hand like swatting at flies or something lol.

Some voices (screaming, humming, grudging) during very close depth charge explosions, when lights go off and glass breaks, bolts firing, etc. Cos having the crew play poker while a depth charge detonates 5 feet away is really not what Im looking for.

Like you said, running around, having trouble keeping themselves on their feet, maybe even sometimes falling down.

The faces can be done easily. Just to see them grabbing to something to hold themselves, grinding teeth, with somewhat worried faces is enough.

Just a couple things I thought of that may be rather mundane additions,
but one was Going To Red (internal lights) at sunset and the reverse at sunrise is automatic in SH3; personally I'd like to either do that manually (perhaps a switch close to the Echolot wall), or have an additional box selection from one of the officer icons or something which calls out the command and a crewman carries it out.
Also, there are a few tunes on the gramophone I wouldn't mind either turning down or up when the crew and I are vegging out in cruise mode. What about having the volume adjustable in some way? Someone mentioned a more involved process of receiving messages from the radioman, which would be cool too. Having him respond to a volume up or down on the gramophone shouldn't be too hard.

Too much immersion? :DL

Good suggestion. I'd like to see manual "rig for red" as an option. The automatic "white-for-day-red-for-night" approach of SH3 is just too simplistic and doesn't accurately reflect real usage, however it does prolly suit the needs of many players.

Were it selected as an option by the user though, there'd need to be a penalty for not using it correctly, say temporarily impaired vision if you let your crew go topside without adequately adjusting first.

Would go hand-in-hand with the return of the sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset calendar. ;)

Of course, later in the war red goggles largely replaced the red light, so it would be less of an issue.

I guess what your comment does lead to though are independant lights for each compartment - SH3 is all white or all red. Sleeping areas should always be dark, engine room white, control room red (when rigged that way) for example.

They need to be more human.

I hope they add a lot of little things, manual chores they would be doing at the times they should do them.
I hope that the cook isn't always making soup when you walk by, he should do the dishes once a day.

Your in a confined area with the same bunch of people for years, sometimes. By the end of the war you should
beable to name everyone of your crew members. In the games now, I could care less about my crew. I hate to
bring it up, but look at Oblivion. If you spend one month "playing time" in the same village, you know everyone
by name, their personalities, jobs, you recognize them by site. In these games, I yet to know anything besides,
he stands there all the time, and he stands there all the time.

and to the first person who says "Well it's not that kind of game"
I say " Then it's not real."
