Fortunately there don't seem to be too many bugs in Akella's latest game but one of them is definitely a blessing and I certainally won't be complaining about it.
If you go into sim mode in exterior view and move your view below the surface then use the tab key to bring up the unit order panel then issue some random orders to your ships using the F-keys as you do this the horrible arcadey radar thing & the ammo counters move incrementally down the screen until they disappear altogether. You can still jump into the tac map using the "M" key to use the damage functions etc that were on the radar panel. The radar thing & ammo counters only reappear when you start an entire new game, for the duration of your current game they are gone!
