View Full Version : "Sir, we sunk a destroyer...due to a fender-bender!"

So, I started a career with the Asiatic Fleet using RFB and Pre-Pearl Harbor career start. The fleet sent me out to patrol in the USS Salmon, and once I received the news about Pearl, I was determined to go after those evil Japanese! I got sent up to the East China Sea, where I happened onto a small convoy filled with lots of juicy merchant targets. I got several, but boy, did their escorts have bees in their bonnets! In a tactical miscalculation, I surfaced to finish off a wounded merchant, because I thought I was far enough away from the escort to do so safely and then escape undetected.

Suddenly, the other escort, which I'd lost track of in the fray, came charging at me. I was about to order a crash dive, but it was too late. I was up on deck, watching helplessly as the Mutsuki-class destroyer proceeded to barrel into my ship, and with a horrible sound of scraping metal, drove right over my stern! I was sure I was done for. Needless to say, I was a bit surprised once he got all the way over me, he was sinking and went down in under a minute! I dove quickly and got out of there as quickly as I could, happy with my sheer luck! I ended up with 50% hull damage, but was just in awe. Sure, I made some tactical mistakes, but that was just quite an experience!

Just thought I'd share a moment that really made me pause and go "wow!" in SH4! :D

Wow indeed :haha:

Yea its amazing how when a DD runs over the sub the DD generaly loses :o Not exactly realistic but... it is what it is.

By the way the reason you lost track of the other escort is probably doing the old "One destroyer sits and listens while the other thrashes about" ;)

A quick scan with the scope before surfacing is in order. Often your alerted to a nearby DD when the tracers come raining down on your scope

i've faced a strange thing too

i was going back to base on the coast in australia, and faced two ships alone in the sea. One destroier and a small split freighter

the nice thing is that both came across me and both started to fire over me. i concentrated torpedoes on the destroyer and hit him, he losed speed and the freighter come over me! he was more dangerous than the destroyer!

don't know what he was carrying, but probably was very important:yep:

I recently had two DD's circling me ... unfortunately for them, one was circling clockwise while the other was going counter-clockwise. Yup... you can see where I'm going with this.
They clipped each other and one went down as a result the other seemed unaffected.
I did not get credit for it... but it was on account of me that the ship was sunk technically, so I told my boys to stitch another tin can on the kill flag anyways. :smug:

Speaking of strange DD behavoir. During one of my stock patrols before I moved to RFB I was sneaking into Osaka to nab some pictures of the harbour there for intel when a pair I saw a DD going DC run speed, backwards.

I will never forget the DD that was broken in half and burning on the beach... and then the #$%^&* shot a hole through my conning tower from 3000+ yards away! What the heck were they doing still manning the guns??

This was about 2 years ago, a month after I got SH4. I was making a torpedo attack on a japanese task force and while trying to escape I was hit by some depth charges that flooded my engine and stern torpedo rooms and rendered them useless. So i had to blow ballast and maintain depth which would cause me to rise and sink again for an hour or so in game time until I got the flooding under control. So thinking I can sink the one destroyer left I went to periscope depth just to realise that my entire bow was sticking out of the water. By this time I have been seen and he comes about at me at high speed before I can fire and strikes me on the starboard side running over my conning tower without dropping a single DC and starts to burn while going away and sinks a minute later. Surprised I look at my map to see if it's labeled as a kill and realise he radioed for help before he sank as 4 sound contacts broke away from the task force and turned towards me at high speed:o. At this time I realise I can do nothing as my batteries are gone and i can't risk diving again plus the first DD knocked out my periscopes. So I sit there wanting to see what will happen and these DD's come at me one at a time minutes apart directly at my bow. First one comes and glances off my bow at full speed bursting into flames and sinks. This happens to all four and I come out with busted tubes and hull damage. So I waited several more hours till I was sure it was safe and finally surfaced and limped back to Pearl with the kills from the 5 destroyers that rammed me, a kongo, and a heavy cruiser from the task force.:D

Wow... that is seriously wild. Five in a row... :smug:

You know, since ramming a submarine is a valid accepted destroyer tactic, perhaps someone with the knowhow should fix that so getting rammed = death for the submarine and not the destroyer?

The damage has been fixed in official patches from Ubisoft. This was about 2 months after the retail release.

I dunno, I wouldn't call it fully fixed to be realistic. In V 1.5, I was once practicing destroyer evasion and had a destroyer run right through the stern of my boat at a neary 90 degree angle about halfway down the back half of the boat because I got target fixated on yet another destroyer. Probably should have cut my submarine in two or at least made me choose between the bottom and the surface, but my damage control teams managed to get the flooding under control and restore power. I'm not sure if the destroyer went down or not as I was a *little* busy with the DC. Sure, I doubt that I could have been rammed 5 times and lived to tell the tale, but the chances of surviving just one of those are not very high.

Others may disagree with me though.

Lol I remember when that first happened to me. I was in the Convoy attack training, and was an idiot to hit emergency surface. 10 minutes after I surfaced some random escort hit my sub amidships...then exploded in firey epicness. It was weird, but funny.

I must be playing the wrong mod sink the biggest ship in the convoy and sooner or later something bad is going to happen(FORTS) I only get a once in a blue moon where a dd messes up.:wah:

One time a DD was going to depth charge me, but stopped right as it dropped the charge, resulting in it exploding itself in half, while giving me the credit.

I was quite happy.

The funniest thing that happened to me today was seeing a two-year old thread resurrected like it was yesterday. :sunny:

It's not an old thread to us new guys. :03:

(Ok, even retreads got a lot of catchin' up to do. It's really good to be back, btw.)

I never object to old threads being resurrected. I only tease when the person doing the resurrecting responds to a very old post as if it were made two minutes ago, without even mentioning that they're doing it. That's jarring to me, so I say something.

Well, jarring to me is canning preserves. But I agree that the poster flunks the 'attention to detail' portion of Navy bootcamp. Probably left the catch edge up on his bunk and his 'b' drawer unlocked. Maybe marched backwards in formation.
