View Full Version : What I Did Instead

Well, it's taken me a month of pain and toil, but I finally got it done:

WHAT I DID INSTEAD!

Being an account of the activities that kept me from the 2009 SubSim meet in Copenhagen.

I really did want to go to Copenhagen, having been there when I was 12 (which was before a lot of you were born, being 1962 and all). But as the time grew close it looked more and more like I wouldn't be able to come up with the money. Couple this with my friend Charles "getting the band back together" last May, and when he asked if we could play a club date on September 16 I said "Sure. Why not."

Of course everybody was devastated when I posted that I wouldn't be going to the meet (yeah, right! Like anybody even noticed.), but when I posted a link to the band's website http://www.myspace.com/monkeyrumband everybody said it was cool...even Neal.

So we played at Liquid Joe's, here in Salt Lake, and it went pretty well. And a friend filmed us. And I tried and tried and tried to get the video onto my computer, and tried and tried some more to find a video editing program that would work for me. The only one I found that would work left a watermark on the picture (right in the center!) unless I paid for the activation key. I did so, and then had to hassle with the fact that it wanted to go online to do it, and I don't currently have home internet. Luckily they had a contingency plan, and they sent me a program that would grab my computer's ID number. After yet another trip to the library they sent me a little program that told the original program it was okay, and after four weeks of trials and tribulations I was finally able to get it up on YouTube!

So, now you get to see what I did while I wasn't in Copenhagen.

I've cut out most of the between-songs talking. Click on 'More from SEBradfield and scroll to the bottom to see them in the proper order, or not, whatever turns you on.

Except maybe that first song I'd swear I heard that tune before. :03:

Pretty cool stuff thanks for sharing.

Hey which one is you?

:D Yeah, we tacked that onto the front of our first tune, just for fun. It's currently the only 'cover' we do. I wasn't aware that you knew The Anacreontic Song, however.

I'm the old fat bass player on the right, in the stripey shirt with the peace symbol. I'm also the one who wrote and sings Partners In Crime.

Lets us know your schedule for any upcoming gig, as far in advance as possible. Some of us have extra air miles and can grab cheapie weekend tickets. Might pop up there to watch you play, buy you a beer.

Would be nice, and touring Europe and Asia would be awesome. But one thing at a time. First we have to convince the local crowd we're good enough, and original enough, to actually pay to see us. For now it's still bars and clubs.

A little disappointed there wasn't any guitar burning but otherwise top marks.
Thanks! As for burning guitars, we're musicians, not showmen. And too poor. The one you see is the one I have!

'The Devils Knock'
I'll tell Clay you said that. Ain't nothin' like the blues, and we have several more where that one came from. Funny story about that song: One week later we played at a place called Burt's Tiki Lounge. We opened for four other bands, all Punk acts. A friend said that when we started 'Devil's Knock' a couple of the punk kids were making jokes about "that blues crap", but by the end they were cheering too.

And another one: When the last band at Burt's was getting ready to play, one of them told me "Man, we're glad we weren't the ones who had to follow you guys!" Maybe I'm bragging a little, but it felt good to have another musician tell me that.

Well, I wouldn't waste that kind of money for a bar gig, even if it became a complete 4-hour set. But here's a deal: If we do ever become 'known', and actually do go on a tour, I'll put up our schedule here. Any subsim member who can make a show only has to ask me here, and free tickets for friends and family will be forthcoming.

You have to by our records, though!:rotfl2:

And, as always, special thanks to Neal!

This kind of music isn't usually my cup of tea, but that was pretty fracking awesome Steve! :yeah: Your account of the music did not do it justice.

Hypothetically speaking, what would it cost to play at the next subsim meet, assuming that it is held in Galveston again?

You might want to put some reverb on the mics so the voice blends a bit more, but it hard to tell with the camcorder sound.

Yeah, we had no control over the sound. They had a soundman who balanced everything for the club. He even recorded us, and I would have mated that recording to the video, but for some reason it came out filled with static, so I had to go with the videocam sound.

But, all things considered, it wasn't too bad.
