Recommended Submarine Reading?

Well to start off, I guess hello subsim! Just picked up Silent Hunter 4 and I think I have submarine fever.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some good reads on submarine history, and the technical's for the WW1 & WW2 time period.

I'm not sure about technical but on the story side of things Das Boot is brilliant, re reading it at the moment.

it really depends on what kind of submarining you are into.

U-boats Under The Swastika by Jak Mallmann is my go-to book for everything German and underseas 1939-1945

Blind Man's Bluff is another good one. Cold War era.

TIME released a book called "War Under The Pacific" that details the American fleet boat war 1941-1945

If your into WWII U.S. subs than "Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous WWII Submarine" is a fun read.

I can recommend Submarines of World War Two by Erminio Bagnasco. Used it as a resource for a presentation :DL It covers (as the title suggests) the WW2 era and all the subs built by the major powers.

Well, I checked my local library and they don't have much so I started with some broader naval topics.

Battle at Sea: 3000 years of naval warfare
Plan Z: The Nazi bid for naval dominance

Those are the two books I put on hold.

The Historical Naval Ship Association has posted on-line all of the manuals from a Fleet-type submarine (circa 1940's), and actual war patrol reports - read first had as some of the best skippers we had line up for their torpedo runs. These dry and cryptic logs are great reading. Pick you favorite boat, or skipper and read.

Bound to be none to popular with some around here but still a very informative read, check out Count Not the Dead: The Popular Image of the German Submarine. Michael Hadley ISBN 0773512829

Prof Hadley dwells into the histography of the U-Boot Waffe and debunks much of its charished mythology. However, it is done with considerable respect and the research behind the conclusions is impressive. It's interesting to see how much U-Boat propaganda came to become "facts" not only in Germany but also Allied countries as well.
