Hello all,
I've played SH3 since release but have never gotten too far into a career before switching games. I have always come back to SH3 and was pleased to see that GWX 3 is out now, which has brought me back once again.
One thing I have never done is bag an enemy carrier. I'm currently playing in June 1942 in the Med. Can anyone suggest where the best place to find one would be?

I have also never finded one but historically there are only two places to find a carrier in the Mediterranean: Gibraltar and Alexandría.Malta was used also for a short time but only for temporals repairs or download planes.
The only Carrier I've found in a career was in 1945 with a Type XXI, I think I was near New York when I spotted a light escorted carrier, other than that I haven't seen them =/
I have never encountered one in the Mediterranean. In the Atlantic I have sank two or three escort carriers I think, two where part of an airborne hunter killer group and one was in the middle of a huge convoy.
I never really searched for carriers, so the only thing I can say to you is: keep searching and eventually you will sink you carrier.

Try sitting just inside the Straights of Gibraltar. I've come across three carrier groups coming through the Straights at various stages in the war. You can also improve your chances by enabling VonDos' HMS Glorious mod and the campaign file that goes with it although that is earlier in the war (1939/40).

I came across the illustrious during the invasion of Norway, but all my 4 torps misfired. Talk about historical accuracy. :o

Keep a watchful eye on the coastline north of Narvik (Harstad IIRC) for a couple of carrier battle groups and also be mindful of carrier battlegroups travelling eastward from Gibraltar toward Malta.

I'm always surprised at the detail in GWX, so I think I will hang around to see if the carriers show up to support Harpoon and Pedestal as noted in the GWX manual.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've run into a few Bogues off the coast of Canada as part of HK groups and convoy escorts. Bagged one or two myself. :smug:

In mid-1943 I was sent to a grid off the coast of Northern Africa (near those islands). On the way back to France I decided to snoop around outside the entrance to the Mediterranean for some easy merchants.
It was near the coast of Morocco that I picked up a huge enemy task force traveling at high speed. Through the binoculars I could make out a V&W Destroyer so I thought I had come across a convoy. I went down to 30 meters to listen. My sonar man picked up only warship contacts. I was about 6 km away.
I surfaced and went in a little closer and what do I see? A carrier! The only problem was that I was still too far away and these guys were doing over 20 knots. I would never be able to get into the perfect firing position without getting sighted by the pesky destroyers.
As annoyed as I was, I had to let them pass though in retrospect I could probably have come up with a firing solution for the carrier... :nope:

Mid 43? The escorts would probably have hounded you to death if you'd gone for the shot. You made a good decision, Herr Kaleun, and lived to fight another day. 'Be more aggressive' doesn't mean 'be more dead'!

indeed you would have to dodge destroyers for six hours after that...

Carriers, regardless of class are always extremely special.....but sadly, not that common.
When the opportunity presents itself you usually have little time to carry out your assesment regarding risk versus surviveability.
BE MORE AGGRESSIVE!! http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
