An entire Florida family is electrocuted to death when an antenna they were trying to raise contacted a 13kv line.

Being a licensed amateur radio operator we hear these storys occassionally but the level of this tragity is staggering.

Indeed...

I guess I take this story a bit personal in that I knew a man whom was killed erecting a tower. Not by electrocution but the tower collapsed while he was some 60 feet in the air when it came down... on top of him. The man worked on antenna towers as a profession. He worked on towers up to several hundred feet tall. Everyone was quite shocked at the accident.

Erecting large antenna arrays is dangerous buisness. In fact I beleive (if I understand the story right) any professional erection service would have not taken the job nor could it have been permitted.

I heard of a train driver here in Sydney who train surfed, this with a 1500 V power line in close proximity! Needless to say, he was fired before he was fried!:o

Train surf?

An old fad, ride on top of any vehicle in the surfing position.

I remember those cub scouts and their leader getting the same results erecting a tent. Tragic.

Right... so they decided to poke their pole around a power line and got zapped? I should feel bad for them because...?

I agree. As much as I feel bad for the surviving members of the family, there is always a price for stupidity. Sometimes it is your own life...

After watching the news video, I don't feel as bad for them. They were putting it up at 8:30 at night. If they had done it in the day time, this probably would not of happened.

No surviving member of that household anyhow thats what makes it so tragic.

No, if you watch the video they have a 21 year old daughter that was inside the house. And another son.

Because you're a human being and not some callous jerk?

So, I'm a jerk because I dont feel bad for someone who clearly didnt have a clue that poking around a power line with a metal antenna could be dangerous? Fine, jerk I am then.

When I was three, I was electrocuted for a number of minutes. I really don't think that would be a nice way to go.

People also have to realize that humour is often a side effect of grief.

http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/Grief_Relief_Looking_for_Laughter_in_Loss.html

Humour is also a tool that helps people cope with bad situations in which they have little control.

Although I am sure it is common in other countries, it is especially common in America. We joke about pretty much everything.

We joked when the Challenger exploded (What does NASA stand for: Need Another Seven Astronauts).

We joked about the 911 attacks ( What's Al Qaida's favorite football team? The New York Jets)

We joked about Hurricane Katrina (I heard from my brother who has re opened his bar in the French Quarter, he said business was a little quiet but was picking up now that some of his regulars have been drifting back in.)

Laughing at these types of jokes does not mean that the situation was not horrible. We joke about them because they are horrible terrible events. Because these events invoke such powerful emotions, we turn to irreverent "gallows" humour. I experienced this when I was in the military and as an EMT. Frankly if we did not laugh, we could not handle the stress.

It may sound flippant, but if we did not care, we would not joke about it.

Humour is always offensive to someone or something. That is the nature of humour.

And it is most important that just because I don't think something is funny, does not mean it is not funny to someone else.

This this.

"Authorities have identified the victims as 55-year-old Melville Braham, 49-year-old Ana Braham and 15-year-old Anthony Braham."

Damn, you are some really tough guys. Not.

Tough hasn't got a fin thing to do with it. Excuse me, but I do not feel sorry for people who die due to their own stupidity.

The way I see it people should feel sorry for the surviving family members because they are the ones to pay the price of going through very hard times now. The people who got killed in the accident did get killed because of their own stupidity and lack of foresight.

Also, I don't agree with some people here attacking Dowly and calling him names. He is entitled to his opinion so leave him alone.

Nobody called Dowly a name, but if you're gonna venture such a callous opinion you have to expect that people will think less of you for it.

Flippin heck I feel for the family.

But...well.. I can't help but agree with Dowley in the end. Honestly if I'd chucked a fishing line over a power cable and got fried? Everyone I know would have considered me an idiot.

That doesn't mean they still wouldn't have been saddened by your passing. It's ok to feel bad for someone whose mistake cost them their lives.
