Hi there.

I am thinking of getting either sh3 or sh4 to do some hunting in the atlantic.
I have never played a sim before, but have always been interested in a subsim.

First advice needed. Which game? sh3 or sh4? My computer is a 3GHz 1 Gb ram 256-mb grafic card. Is sh4 out of the question? I somehow got the impression sh3 was a better game with all the mobs to it. Is that correct?

Been planing for sh3 with GWX and SH3Commander. Is there any other mod that might be nice to check out?

What about the learning curve. How steep is it?

Now to the final and most important question. How long do you normally take for playing the game (for each session that is)? Is it ok to jump in and play for an hour or two or do you need to be able to play for most of the day to make it worthwile?

Thank you for the help!

I play SH3 for an hour or 2 at a time. It works out well, you can save the game at any time, (there are a few glitches with saving games though). I have never played SH4 so I can't compare. Although I will say GWX 3.0 is a huge improvement over the stock SH3.

I have a 3.4 Ghz machine with 2 gigs of ram and a Geforce 7300GT w/512 megs.

SHIII runs flawless

SHIV is a little slow but quite playable.

SHIV is more eye candy

SHIII W/ GWX is still pretty and has allot more substance.

I wouldn't rule out SH IV working on your system but I would get and learn on SHIII first.

If your able, I'd try them both and then decide.

I'd go for SH3 plus the mod combo you listed above.

An excellent introduction to sub sims, and a far fuller Atlantic experience if you're specifically interested in that theatre.

The learning curve is as steep as you want it to be, but the realism options allow you to slowly work your way up. You can change them every time you return to base too, so no problem starting a career at low realism, and upping the difficulty after each mission.

As for each session, they can be as short as you want - sort of. To give you an example, yesterday, I started up, sank one ship with the deck gun, saved just south of Ireland, and quit (back to work, booo). About 20 minutes overall, including load times. Of course the career continues from out at sea when I return. Dip in and out, or do a 12 hour+ stint. Up to you matey.

Yeah, just don't save underwater while undergoing depth charge attack...especially after a very successful attack on a convoy.

Save corrupted...victories lost...can't find the convoy again. And, here I was thinking that glitch was something that only happened to other people. :nope:

Ref SH3
I would recommend SH3 with GWX and SH3 Commander.
Play unmodded SH3 for a couple of hours first so you appreciate the added GWX content when modded.
Just be aware that some folk have problems with games saved when submerged and/or near shipping/action.
Personally I have not had this problem on my current setup, but it does exist.
Don't rely on one back up.
Make a number of saved games, and remember that loading an earlier save game deletes newer saves.
Enjoy

You took the words out of my mouth Zilch

SH 3 with GWX is super. SH-5 will be coming out in about six months. The learning curve is not bad. You start at the Academy where you learn the basics. I would do a few single missions before launching a career.

Besides the GWX manual, you might visit my kielman webbie, whic has articles on tactics and other aspects of operating your boat.

Oh, and welcome aboard :salute::salute::salute:

Thank you all for your quick and very informative replies!

I will buy sh3 over steam and add the two mods I mentioned before. This coming weekend is probably going to be my first run with the game :).

After a few frustrating attempts I am sure I will check out Brags web page too ;).

Cheers and a big thank you to you all. Seems to be a very nice community here.

Let everyone know how it goes. Be warned, though, it's more addictive than Tetris, caffeine and World of Warcraft put together...
