The eSim forum has an interesting thread currently. It gives the link to the copied original documents of the Eastgerman War Operation plan, featuring a PDF with 238 pages, original documents, listing all intel they had on NATO forces expected to become active in case of a war, and their own operational responses. The level of detail is breathtaking, down to size and weight limits of roads and logistic details of trasportation of units.

they are currently asking for translators. Which means you can make use of this document only if you can understand German.

Again, this is the Staatsicherheit's orignal document describing the detailed war plan of the GDR army in case of a war.

Some reaction in the thread from American veterans indicate they find the ammount of knowledge the StaSi had about their units stunning, and exceeding their own knowledge at the time they served.

No, not my merits, I just read about it in the original thread over there. ;) Somebody else found it, the author of that thread.

No. Like today the plan was for the US to do all the heavy lifting. Then criticize after the fact. Some things never change.

I could have guessed it. The new semester starts at Monday - not to say that I'm already in arrears with my other stuff :-?

Depends on a) how many people want to see it, b) how long they can wait and c) how important it is in the first (or here: third) place. I'm somewhat interested myself, though.


EDIT: Following the recent trend, we could set up yet another poll :O:

I don't think the GDR's WWIII plan was to allow the US to do the heavy lifting. Perhaps that was the FRD's plan but not the GDR's.

In the cold war:

FRD = good guys
GDR = bad guys

Just had a look at the document. Quite interesting, but full of officialese. I'd say that instead of translating it myself, I encourage everyone interested to learn German. Would be less of an effort :O:

Funny, I know very few people who use GDR, the usual abbreviation I and most people I know use is DDR...

FRG and GDR were quite common, internationally, DDR was sometimes used outside both Germanies too, but BRD was used rarely, because Westgermany refused to use it due to the fact that it was Eastgerman official terminology.
