I've just ordered a new PC and it should arrive in a few days. :woot:
There's a handful of games I'm looking forward to playing on it, but only a handful because I've mostly ignored PC game releases for the last few years (on account of my system being nowhere near good enough to play them). So, in an effort to find out what I've been missing out on, I've been looking at various GOTY awards... but from what I've seen it seems like these are get handed out to crappy console ports these days!? COD4 for best PC shooter? Surely not. GTA IV for PC game of the year? Give me a break. How come games like Total War are not even runners up in these lists?
So anyway, currently on my "to buy" list I have...
Empire: Total War (no brainer)
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising (if it sounds good in the reviews)
Crysis (maybe... well, probably... alright definitely... I'm a graphics whore)
I'm also looking forward to Diablo III and Silent Hunter 5 but apart from that I'm clueless as to what is out and what is coming out soon. I'd like to hear recommendations from you PC gamers! What's good? What's not? What gems did I miss in the last 3-4 years?

Ah, and Dragon Age: Origins is something to keep an eye on. If anyone can crank out a good RPG, it's Bioware. :yeah:
Neverwinter Nights meets Oblivion, kinda. :hmmm:

Arma2 looks really good but I think I'll wait for the bugs to be ironed out before buying. :-?
I have heard of Civ IV. Practically everyone gave it GOTY that year! Is it as good as the reviewers all say it is? I've never played a Civ game before.
Last time I bought a game on the strength of its reviews it was CoD4 and I was sorely disappointed, I mean I was bored to death in that game and if the SP campaign hadn't been so short I doubt I would have finished it at all.

Dragon Age: Origins
Never heard of it.
Googling...

Sounds like it might be good!

Fallout 3
Oblivion
I own Oblivion and I like it but it's not perfect. There are serious problems with the AI and the Stealth mechanics, and from what I've read it sounds like FO3 ("Oblivion with guns") does nothing to correct those problems.
X3 Terran Conflict
World in Conflict
I loved Elite II: Frontier, but the X games never appealed.
The graphics in WiC look quite nice... :hmmm:

Here are my suggestion
Empire Total War
Napoleon Total War(Upcoming)
Silent Hunter V(Upcoming but wait for others to become the guinea pigs)
Star Wars The Old Republic(Upcoming)
Assassin Creed 1(already out) and 2(Upcoming)
Mass Effect 1(Out) & 2(Upcoming)
The Witcher(The first and the upcoming)
Medieval 2 Total War+expansion!
If you like racing then pick this: Grid
I suggest you skip buying Crysis to me Assassin Creed 1 is a hell lot better!:D
I suggest borrowing the game from a friend just to try its gameplay. If you still like it then and only then go buy it

Empire Total War is the first game I'm buying. :yep: I recently found out about Napoleon TW and will be watching the progress of that game. :yep: I've seen a lot of "best story" awards given to Mass Effect. I like a good story but I wouldn't normally go looking for one in a video game... is it (the story) really that good, or is it just good by game standards?

Oh, I definitely recommend X3 (Haven't had too much of a chance to play TC yet, but Reunion was great, as were the first 2 games). If you get TC, just watch out for the dreadful copy protection, or wait for the 2.5 patch which, like all the other games, will remove it.

Fallout is something different from the TES games (Oblivion, Morrowind), but same engine so it's gonna be familiar. Oblivion with guns is not accurate though. Never had any annoyances from the AI, but that doesn't tell you much. Imo best thing is just wandering the Wasteland, listening to 60s music on the radio. Like Oblivion, they didn't just create a game, they created a world. Personally I consider F3 a much better game, but I really like these open-world RPGs a lot, so bit biased view.
X3 is a time-sink, it's something you got to learn to like. WiC is a pretty decent strategy, does away with basebuilding though, something to consider. Found single-player very enjoyable, played through it several times and still come back to it every now and again. No other strategy has me coming back for more.
Mass Effect has decent gameplay as well. You can use cover, though it can be a little finicky at times. But it's definetly not a shooter, really a RPG at the core. Also from Bioware, like Dragon Age. If you like RPGs, you'll probably like this one.

Yeah, I want it. I want it. I want it. I want a wheel, too. But I'm not buying a wheel for ONE game... what other racing sims are good? Bearing in mind that when it comes to driving I prefer simulators to arcade games. From what I'm reading it sounds like GRID just barely falls on the "simulator" side of that sliding scale.

I can't find any news on BOB:SOW, is it dead?
imho the best (most fun) driving game i have played on the pc is Flatout: ultimate carnage. its is really is one of the most addictive racers ever, and it looks superb.
I will check out grid though.

The title wasn't changed, and I've never been to their website.

Rumor has it that BoB:SoW would probally be released next year on the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
but I've yet to see more proof about this, it would be a nice thing though.
I hope that 2010 will bring more info about it's progess and perhaps some actual ingame material.

September 15th, perhaps. ;)
On the subject of racing sims, I found this: http://www.simbin.se/
From the reviews it sounds like RACE 07 +expansions is my kind of realistic racing sim, but the lack of any damage modelling concerns me. :hmmm:

GRID is pretty fail tbh, you would be better off geting GTR2.

The more reviews I read, the more uncertain I am about GRID.
Why GTR2 and not RACE 07 (later game released by the same company)?
Edit:
Ooo, simbin are about to release RACE ON, according to their website. Looks nice.

Because I have no experience with Race 07 so cant recomend it, besides GTR2 has the power and glory mod.

Well to put it bluntly Mass effect is the best story driven game I've ever played. The gameplay is entertaining and the game feels like you're watching a cinema. And it has got a sex scene in the game:haha:
I'm also watching fro Dragon: Origin another title from Bioware.

Some aspects of Mass Effect though were heavily recycled. Like exploring the generic planets, and the recycled bases on those generic planets. Otherwise it was great.
As for Far Cry 2, that game though fun got old very fast as the side missions are mostly just the same thing over and over (and over) again.
If you want an action game Batman: Arkham Assylum is pretty good fun and well presented (if a little easy).
Need for Speed Shift is also very good for what it is (a sim lite racer) and breaks away from their last several titles. Personaly I prefer them over heavy duty racing sims as I don't have the time to learn one, and you can't race very well with out a wheel (joysticks and gamepads don't work very well).
