The situation is a bit different with the US - Mexico border then it was with the East - West German border. The leaders of the DDR wanted to stem the tide of especially intelligent people such as physicists etc. from running to the west. They didn't have to worry about people sneaking in, except the occasional spy.

true its not the same situation... but personally, i think that the same philosophy should be applied.

Well you already have the Homeland Security and various extended government rights granted by the republicans, all you need is to get Obama to give your border guards the order to shoot to kill and put up some more fences, walls, etc.

USA, the DDR of the 21st century. Approved by the republican party. :)

Or...

we could go the democrat route and just allow citizenship to every Jose, Ferdinand and Gutierrez that walks into our country.

neither way is particularly acceptable.
