Bit-tech.net has an interesting interview (http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/pc/2009/09/26/ship-simulator-extremes-interview/1) with VSTep the developers of the Ship Sim Series on their forthcoming title "Ship Simulator-Extremes"

Intresting... lets hope its a big step up from SS08.

maby it will be modable...

the game could do better in some parts...

Check out Virtual Sailor. There's tons of add ons (ships, scenery etc.). I only have SS2005, which is an illegally sold version of VS :o
The physics in VS aren't that convincing. I've never tried SS, but from I've heard / read, they aren't probably any better. That's something I would really like to see improved instead of shiny graphics.

ship simulators physics are better than VS, but the game lacks modability, and replayability. all the missions are scripted. I believe the game could do better with the water, real waves, not just a texture like ss08.

I have SS2006 & 2008 and would say the ship physics are much better than in VS especially where it comes to docking and towage. As for the scenarios whilst only a limited number shipped with the game you can create you own through the easy to use mission builder. SS2008 users have already created hundreds of new scenarios.

Virtual sailor I would say has the edge on environmental physics, currents, wind etc.

VStep keeps a reign on anyone adding ships which in some ways is a good thing as the quality of ships is very high.

To further add to the variety the online multiplayer is also quite good especially when you play the part of a tug trying to berth vessels etc. The community is quite active in multiplayer much more so than Silent Hunter 4 has ever been.

because silent hunter 4 is really what I would consider a good MP game I think...

Virtual sailor is more about quantity, not quality, and ship simulators models still arnt that great... It dosent model all physic aspects, but it does ok.

the enviornments in ss looks better, I guess cause there made by an actual team...

but even tho sh4s ports are generic, I believe it has a better enviornment. (I really hope they add 3d waves, not just that flat texture...)

the ship damage model tho... needs alot of TLC in SS08, it really dosent look good, and the ships sink rong, a ship could get hit by the bow, and it sinks by its stern. also the ai has goo for brains, they will just ram you instead of steer around you usualy.

A good thing about virtual sailor is that it is multi platform, you have combat ships, cargo, submarines, and pleasure crafts, I like that it has a some very very good addons, some even beat the ship sim ships in my opinion. one ship actualy had a working engine room.

I was also dissapointed that there will never be any warships in the SS series... the community overthere seems to be against them with or without working guns.

Not so sure about that, a lot of people have been asking for warships and they have already been implemented to a degree in the pro version of the sim... Checkout this video of the setup of a Maritime hijacking prevention training scenario with Ship Simulator Professional (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5itC_u_uKc)

I'd agree with you that the sea and physics associated with them in terms of current & wind effects are not great in SS. However I think the ports and coastlines are the best in any home simulation as they are moddeled very closely on the real world locations.

I think one of the best representations of the sea is in another Dutch game the recently released Sail Simulator 5. look at the waves and in particular the yachts response to them and the wind in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsf3Q5dTuTQ). If I were Stentec I would licence this technology to the like of Ubisoft & Vstep for inclusion in their games.

WOW the community must have REALLY changed... when I was there there was a huge arguement over warships. which led to afiew members and I(one of the older members) leaving alittle over a year ago...:o

(the anti warship peoples best arguement was that it would ruin mp... even when we talked about haveing static gun positions.)

That's a pity and rather a silly arguement in that the mp games are very much comparmentalised ie only certain ships on certain maps etc so it would be easy to provide for those who did and did not want warships.

yea... we tryed to explain it to them... but it turnt into a almost "youtube" vedio reply arguement... of them just talking about mp, and how they didnt want any violence in the game. (which haveing no working guns... isnt violent...)

anywho back on topic...

looks intresting....
