I was submerged flanking a LPL side by side. Came up to let my scope in the air. 8 dd's opened on it missing me and hitting it. I rised enough to pop it once with my DG after I got on the other side from the dd's. They just murdered it and sunk it. I got credit.
Was scared the explosion would sink me, but lil damage...Just funny.
Really a bug.
Hadn't done it since stock, but you use to get right beside a enemy ship the others don't shoot and you could take real advantage, but just another silly bug.

Pretty ballsy surfacing with all those guns around.
In all my play time Ive only witnessed this once but then again I strive to go undetected untill the last moment. When the shooting starts I usually dive to evade. ;)

The other day I was spotted attacking a convoy and a DD was coming straight for me. I lined up a torpedo and fired, then submerged. The DD had to come to a full stop because its path was cut off by the tanker I had been targeting. (I used external view to watch this.) The ship passed, the DD continued on its course and ran straight into the torpedo I'd fired at it. Then the torpedoes hit my original target too! Both sank.
Using the merchant ships as cover is quite a useful tactic, but does come with huge risks if the merchants are armed. How come there were 8 DD's guarding a single ship? I've only ever seen about 3 guarding this type of ship. Although I'm still in 1942.

Oh, I had already been fighting for hours, damaged and trying to escape shallow water by riding beside the LPL. Early war, no guns, but a rear machine gun. I wanted to get one shot so I would get credit for a hit, without it no credit....really a bug.
I think in stock they won't shoot you if you surface near a ship. A real bug you can take advantage of if you're inclinded to that way of play.

they wont fire at warships so i once was beat to hell and out of fish so i surfaced parallel and touching the sides of a fuso BB i had disabled and was decks awash to fire deck gun but the BB couldnt get to me with its guns.
i sank 6 DD's that were circling but wouldnt shoot at their own BB.
well i was having so much fun i didnt notice i drifted about 20 feet out from the BB and BOOM point blank shot lol buy the time i submerged i went straight to the bottom.
it could be a lifesaver for getting time for repairs so it can be used if you are brave "or desperate" enough.

I was did that in Truk, came up beside a BB that I had torped and shot all the dd's while they circled. Having fun I shot the planes of the Yamato, ect.
I drifted too much. The Yamato and another Fuso got me with their big guns later....That was enough.

What's dumb is I've got a lot of damage. I just finished up that attack.
A dd ran into the sinking LPL and dropping charges blew itself up. I did the same thing to a oil tanker and they blew it up also. Not to mention a DD ran over and blew up 2 lifeboats.
Holding depth with my stern out of the water at 80ft. Several dd's were running around. They don't come over, I guess the stern is sticking out and they don't want to hit it, but also like they don't see the stern, cause they don't shoot at it. In reality they would've run me over and shot me up. Course using periscope depth holds you from a crash dive, where clicking on a depth still sends you to the bottom
I actually escaped with my stern out of the water the whole time. Really silly...So the japs blew up three of their ships and I escape....

"Not to mention a DD ran over and blew up 2 lifeboats."
I've only seen that happen once but it was almost fatal to me as I was eating some lunch while watching on the cam. That lifeboat went 200 yards if it went one and it was so funny I was choking on my food. :har:

I just read in Calvert's "Silent Running" that on one of their patrols, they came up between two escorts. The one escort started to fire at them and then stopped because the other escort was too close.
They quickly maneuvered past them and gave them the slip!

They must carry oil tanks in those lifeboats, cuz they blow like a oil tanker...boom.

yep, it looks like they only "see" the conning tower or scope sticking out but i think if the bow or stern gets high enough out the water then they will target you.
they arent avoiding hitting you because they love ramming into you as much as they can.

funny thing about the life boats!
I was sending a spread of torps down the throat of a DD the other night, after I had sent a maru to the bottom. He was comin' on to me "with a bone in his mouth" just passing by where my prey had sunk; one of my torpedos struck the DD head on, while off to my starboard another torpedo exploded in a blazing mushroom cloud.
I watched the DD go down within minutes and zoomed out with the cam to the other explosion site... but couldn't figure out what the heck I had hit.
It wasn't until I checked the captain's log book that I noticed it was a lifeboat. Judging by the size of the blast, they must have tried to salvage whatever was in their tanker I had sunk.. LOL
But really... what kind of odds hitting a life boat in the DEAD of NIGHT, with a torpedo! LOL
