It looks funny. :D

* I see they finally cranked up the number of ROPs. That's gonna serve them wel. :yep:

ATI has always been critised for it's cards overheating like hell... looking at that card, it will propably catch on fire the moment you start your PC. :haha:

It does get pretty toasty under load, but very low idle temp. :yep:

ATI cards heating up so much usually has more to do with rather relaxed fan-profile to keep the noise down than "bad design" though. :hmmm:

Explain me how that isnt bad designing. :DL

I am getting an ATI this time too, I have been very happy with my first Radeons, the 4870 and 4890.

Yeah, you're right. They should be more worried about their cards having a meltdown than keeping it quiet. :rotfl2:

It's just that the average consumer isn't that savvy; they'll never check the temps the thing is running at; all they notice is how much noise it makes. Guess ATI is playing into that, while Nvidia only cares about their performance lead. :-?

Pfft, you just have to ignore the temprature and the problem will go away!

Besides, there has to be some kind of prize for getting your video card to burst into flames...

How in the heck do you clean the heatsinks on that thing?

Maybe you can take the casing off. :hmmm: Then again, that's usually not the case with anything PC related.

All those stats, and the final stat says its slower than the GTX 295.....i will stick with Nvidia as i have done the last 15 years..

I dont like the case design, i prefer somewhat open casings, this one is totally closed so the heat will build up, i like the fact some of my systems fans assist in cooling some heat from my card that gets caught up in my pc case, and this design totally excludes the rest of the cooling system..all that work for one simple 75mm fan will kill this baby over some time especially if you dont clean it regularly..

For the most part this fan operates very quietly, helped by the impressively low 27 watt idle consumption of the Radeon HD 5870. When gaming the fan will of course spin up, as the card can consume up to 188 watts under load,

Look at the difference in loading!

From 27 watt idle to 188 watts, thats too much of a load to be handled by one tiny 75 mm fan..

Eh, isn't the GTX 295 a dual GPU and should be compared to the HD 5870 X2 when it comes out? (Or rather, compare the 5870 when Nvidia releases their card)

Yep. ;)

Kloef, I can assure you a GTX295 sucks quite a bit more power than that 5870. And the 5870, in every review I've seen, handles the heat just fine. A big jump doesn't matter, it's about peak loads.

I'll be waiting for the Nvidia parts as well, but not because there's anything wrong with the 5000 series. Excellent cards, 5870 is the fastest single-gpu card around and DX11 to boot.

Ever heard a 3500 rpm 60mm delta fan at full speed ?
You better get out of the house and even then you will hear the hiss. :haha:

You know what, I have a zotac 9800gtx+ and at idle I don't hear its fan.
But if it goes over 50%, and when playing COD 4 the fan ramps up to 70-80% you'd better be wearing headphones. I don't care if the gpu goes to 80-90 degrees, they are designed to go up to 105-100 degrees but I do care about not having a tornado in the room.
So yes ATI's decision to put silence before temperature is a good design.
Its not as if they let the gpu go beyond the maximal temperature in any case.

I'm running a 5 year old laptop...

This is making me feel so outdated, but it will be years before I have the money to build a new computer

With the reasonable purchase price it's, a prime canidate for Liquid Cooling.

I have a BFG 295 GTX H2OC 1792 mb.

It's factory overclocked and liquid cooled.

The only thing that runs HIGH on my card is the Price. :haha:

Big daddy makes an appearance, 5970.

There are two things that become very clear when looking at our data for the 5970

It’s hands down the fastest single card on the market
It’s so fast that it’s wasted on a single monitor
