As long as I can afford to travel there, and it's not too summer-like hot (which I already get home), I'm ok with every place in the US you can think of. In fact, I've been wanting to go there for some time now, I just hope I don't have to make too many flight connections, which would expand the flight price.
Just so you guys make an idea, I spent about 1000 euros for the whole trip. 450 for the flight (going and coming back), about 250-300 for the hotel, and about 250 for local maintenance (food, museum fares, transportation fares...)
I practically burned through all of a months salary, thankfully, the month is almost over, so I won't be long in this situation of low-money.
So that said, I really hope it's cheaper in some way.
Cheers

Baltimore:
USS Torsk
USS Taney
USS Constellation
Lighthouse Chesapeake
Fort McHenry
Take a tour on a Duwk (yes, you do go into the bay in the DUWK :03:)
http://www.search-rescue.net/tedsenginehouse/DUWK_outside_AFM.jpg
Hooters :hmmm:
1 hour from Washington:
Hazy Air and Space Museum or any museums in DC those from afar would like to visit. Go to the mall and see the WWII memorial. Really, the cost to get there is all that it runs you. The museums are free as well as all the momuments. Get Jim over here so he can see how DC cops handle it....they look the other way.

Halifax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_Halifax)
World War II
Halifax played an even bigger role in the Allied naval war effort of World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II). The only theatre of War to be commanded by a Canadian was the North Western Atlantic, commanded from Halifax by Rear-Admiral Leonard W. Murray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_W._Murray). Halifax became a lifeline for preserving Britain during the Nazi onslaught of the Battle of Britain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Britain) and the Battle of the Atlantic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Atlantic_%281939%E2%80%931945%29), the supplies helping to offset a threatened amphibious invasion by Germany. Many convoys assembled in Bedford Basin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford_Basin) to deliver supplies to troops in Europe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe). The city's railway links fed large numbers of troopships building up Allied armies in Europe. The harbour became an essential base for Canadian, British and other Allied warships. Very much a front-line city, civilians lived with the fears of possible German raids or another accidental ammunition explosion. Well defended, the city was never attacked although some merchant ships and two small naval vessels were sunk at the outer approaches to the harbour. However, the sounds and sometimes the flames of these distant attacks fed wartime rumours, some of which linger to the present day of imaginary tales of German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazi_Germany) U-Boats entering Halifax Harbour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Harbour). The city's housing, retail and public transit infrastructure, small and neglected after 20 years of prewar economic stagnation was severely stressed. Severe housing and recreational problems simmered all through the war and culminated in the Halifax Riot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halifax_Riot) on VE Day in 1945.

Neal,
Just for posterity, may I suggest a listing in this thread of previous Subsim meetings, what vessels were seen and what other major Subsim activities were on the schedule.
If I'm going to pitch San Diego as a location, I may not include paintball but I could offer an alternative (eg: San Diego Zoo) to entice those who have been to other meetings.
It is the place! Lobster also. :D
AVG, I assume you mean lobsta and you'll probably want some chowda with that. For that you should go north for 2 hours from Groton to Kittery ME and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. They have several sub museums however the main one on the base, which honors Squalus and Thresher, has been closed to the public since 9-11. You need a US military ID (active, reserve or retired) to enter.
USS Albacore - http://www.ussalbacore.org/ (http://www.ussalbacore.org/)
Kittery Naval museum - http://www.kitterymuseum.com/ (http://www.kitterymuseum.com/)
John Paul Jones house - http://seacoastnh.com/touring/jpjhouse.html (http://seacoastnh.com/touring/jpjhouse.html)

Also within driving distance of Groton and on the way to Battleship cove is the Naval War College museum in Newport RI at the site of the old torpedo development and testing station

If the WHEN is to be discussed/decided, I'll propose thursday October 14th till Sunday October 17th 2010, and why? Well, that is usually the autumn vacation week for many in Denmark, at least those in schools and universities. I don't know with other European countries, but it may be the same...

I was walking along the pier last night and snapped this of the U555. Friends from Australia who were in town stayed across the road at the Holiday Inn Quad share for about $210 a night.
San Diego, a three hour drive south of Los Angeles or more conveniently a 40 minute prop plane ride from LAX. With connections through regional hubs, travel time to JFK 6 hours, Boston 8 hours, Miami 9. Regional airlines service the city with direct connections to Las Vegas every two hours for $50 (you couldn't drive there for that) Houston $99, Long Island $199.
All major airlines from the Pacific terminate at LAX or SFO with direct connections. Connections to South America through Mexico City. All major airlines have codeshare services through LAX to everywhere in the world.
Climate: Oct - Nov or April - June is best. Avoid the summer heat of 105F, avoid the winter chill of 30 in the fog. Standard west coast dress is jeans, tshirt, and maybe a jacket in the evening and on the waterfront.
Drinking age is 21, minimum driver age for a rental is 25, most companies offer convertibles for the 340 days of sunshine each year.
Other nearby attractions within 15 minutes drive: Sea World, San Diego Zoo, Old Town, Balboa Park. 1 hours drive: La Jolla cove, SoCal wineries, the mountains, the desert.
English is the spoken language, Spanish is accepted at most locations. Tourists are welcome openly. Currency is the US $, price of gas $3.09/g, Big Mac $3.50, 12OZ coke $1.39, 6 pack of Budweiser $8.
Disclaimer: The Mexican border is a 15 minute drive south. Travel to that area is NOT RECOMMENDED for any US, European or Pacific nations. :nope: For more up to date information, contact your local consulate.

U555 - USS Dolphin. (http://www.sdmaritime.org/uss-dolphin-submarine/)
I had not seen the U555 berthed there previously, that spot is usually occupied by one of the clipper ships.
The current exhibit is "A Century of Silent Service".
Presently on exhibit at the San Diego Maritime Museum is "Submarines: A Century of Silent Service" which details the trials and tribulations of the U.S. Navy's submarine service. The Submarine Centennial exhibit includes information about the first U.S. Navy sub built in 1900 by John Holland and how submarines influenced the First World War. The exhibit details sub development to World War II where the Silent Service nearly strangled Japan before the end of the war. After the war came the advent of nuclear subs and submarine-based nuclear missiles. Much of the information about American submarines has been kept quiet, especially during the Cold War years. But, submarines did launch the first missile strikes against Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War in 1990 and more recently fired dozens of cruise missiles at targets in Kosovo. In addition to the displays, the Maritime Museum is showing movies with submarine themes on board the square-rigged sailing ship "Star of India" or the 100-year old ferryboat "Berkeley". Submarines: A Century of Silent Service is on display on board the steam ferry Berkeley.

B-39 Russian Submarine
USS Dolphin sub (AGSS 555)
Just wanted to point out that you should add the USS Midway Museum to this as well. It is 1 block away from the Maritime Museum which contains the other ships listed. The flight deck gives a great view of the harbor
I have also seen them make provisions for special groups many times so you never know if we ask... having part of the meeting on a historic ship like that (although admittedly not quite a submarine..) would be awesome.

Looks like a nice venue for a party!

I, personally, would find Baltimore-D.C. handy because I could just DRIVE or take the Metro to everything!!! :D

I'll just throw in my 2 cents worth:
Portland:
USS Blueback
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=154164
Evergreen museum:yeah: (spruce Goose) 2 museums
http://www.sprucegoose.org/
Tillamook Naval airstation (WW2 blimp base)
Seattle:
USS Turner Joy
Undersea weapons museum
Torplexed:D
Boeing air museum:yeah::yeah:
TP subman1's house:haha:
What about Mo-bile, Alabama? They have a naval park there.
Groton would be cool, see the U-571, oops I mean SSN-571:D
San Fran is cool, you can take the BART to fisherman's Wharf, and there is plenty to do there. The down side: very aggresive transients, you're paying Pelosi taxes:shifty:
I'm content hanging out at Neal's house:D
a side note, any place that has an AC would be a plus.

I'm all for Groton/new london areas, I have family there I frequently visit.
But in groton don't forget about General dynamics, there's an army-navy surplus store I know of, the WWII submarine memorial is there (with the conning tower of the Flasher)
and it's awfully pretty at any time of year

Washington DC / Baltimore is also a great option and would be super convenient for me. I might even be talked into co-sponsoring the event, if someone else in the area were to help me out.
Hmmm...and what would sponsoring entail? (I might not actually be around this summer or when this might happen, though).
Sponsoring just means helping people get settled into their hotels, transportation, part of the planning etc.
As some of us (myself for example) have never been to the East Coast, I'd need a hotel to stay at, along with a schedule for the week, on what and where we would be meeting, where we would eat, where we would go, etc etc.
The more people that drive to the meet, the less transportation we will need. Like last July, mookiemookie, Nikimcbee, and Undersealcpl and I all piled into Neal's car and that was enough to take us around, at the expense of Neal's gas. The people who fly in, are the ones who will need to be picked up and hauled everywhere

Hmmm...and WHEN is the meet going to be? I looked at the early part of this thread, and saw no definite dates.
Oh, another thing in Washington-Baltimore's favor: Annapolis and the Naval Academy!! They got a nifty little museum, there.
Umm, that's hard to tell.
The two official meets I've been in have been in October and September respectively. (2008 & 2009)
Either way, I'll be missing school but well worth it

I really think as far as the United States is concerned, Chicago is the most central location with any naval point of interest.

Well, I think we just need a Main Hub (tm) international airport. Unless, ofc, some of us intended to drive!!!

Well, has the dollar rebounded?? If it's still way down, it would be better for international visitors to come here (and less rape-ish for us U.S. Americans).
