View Full Version : Should I have taken the shot?

Hi all,

2nd patrol (early September, '39) and I come across a task force comprising of 2 battleships, 2 heavy cruisers and a pair of destroyers on both ends.

I am in a perfect firing position, but don't launch any torps.

Why? Because I like to play as realistically as possible, and I had just received a radio message a few hours earlier stating that attacking Allied naval warships is discouraged in order to spare Great Britain any embarassment in these early stages of the war while talks are still in progress.

Now my question is this: 1) Should I have just ignored said radio message and taken out one of these capital ships?

and 2) Would there have been any kind of penalty for doing so right after receiving that radio message?

I think I made the right choice as far as realism goes, but it sure hurt watching those big targets cruise through my sights! :nope:

sink em all! The messages are only added for immersion purposes, I myself have disabled all but the important messages because they irritate me.

As I'm sure many others will say; be more aggressive!

Good call on the realism. There would have been no penalty in game, but it's going to make it taste sweet when BdU gives the all clear to attack warships and you find yourself upon a BB. :salute:

You passed up BB's and cruisers? Oh man...good on you, I'd never have been able to let that slide by.

You might want to consider booking in with a psychiatrist on returning to port :o

Well, actually I was asleep in my berth and the XO felt it was in the best interest not to take the shot!....yeah...that's it! :yeah:

Well you'll certainly learn very quickly to make every shot count when you find yourself on the eastern front next month :O:

1 No...

2 No...

it all depends though.. if this was your first opportunity to watch a BB go down to the bottom because you put the torpedoes in the right place, you should've done it.

but if you've had that satisfaction before, then I'd have done what you did... although it's a nailbiting decision not to push that firing button when you have a perfect solution....

A German captain should/will be strong enough to hold back his urges! If you are ordered to do so (being realistic) do it, if not, then don't! Simple as that!

But if you had a reason to sink those ships, perhaps if they "fired upon" you while you did not fire a single shot, call that retaliation :arrgh!:

Trust me, I considered surfacing right out in front of them in hopes that one of the destroyers would let loose a shot at me! Then I could have claimed self-defence! :D

Of course I probably would have been depth charged right to the bottom as well! :dead:

Talking by own judgement, if you had taken the shot you'd most probably end up in Auschwitz packed, signed and handled by Adolf Hitler himself (before it was even converted to such camp. You'd have to wait a year above all:haha:) since Hitler considered Great Britain a potential ally against the Soviet Union, at least since 1938 and he seeked peaceful solution in 1939.

Pretty much as soon as the RAF bombed Berlin in retaliation for the bombing of London, he and his fellow loonies declared "total war" upon Great Britain, promising to bomb us back into the stone age.

It is true though that he admired Great Britain and her empire, I wonder too if the fact that both Britain and Germany were Christian nations impacted upon this also, in that he saw part of his crusade against the Jews as part of Christian retribution on the Jews for not acknowledging Jesus as god and instead, crucifying him. A Christian nation in his mind would be more likely to be turned to his ideas in time.

You followed orders. Your guilty of nothing. The decision had already been made for you.
The up side is that you saw them, and were never even detected.
Send in a report and let the guys upstairs worry about if THEY did the right thing.
Sometimes "stuff" that roles downhill splashes back up.

That's a great answer! Thanks! :salute:

Now I just hope to meet up with a couple of BBs again under more favourable (for me) circumstances.
