Just a few quick questions from a first time SH4 player :D

1. Is there any way to tell what the 'realism' settings are at durring a carrer? I swear, every time i go to the main menue i think the realizm settings revert to near arcade mode... and im not sure just what the settings for the Career i started is.

2. I havent seen any yet.. but does it ever rain / snow in SH4?.. sofar, ive seen the water change colors depending on were im at, as well as seeing the see get 'rough', but no actual 'storm'.... and while i see clouds in the Missions and war story things, i cant realy make out any clouds at all when in career.

3. Durring the Honshu career mission, it told me to go to a point and destroy the merchatn conshipping.. I got to the island.. but i swear, every merchatn boat is on the 'other' side of the island.. how far away from the 'star' on the map can i be and still be 'doing' the mission?

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but as i said.. just got SH4.. just installed it (as well as a pair of eye-candy mods)... so those are just the first batch of questions ive got about the game =D

Welcome aboard mate, and there are no such thing as stupid questions. Here you go, just my 2 cents:

1. Yes, u can change setting when u are in the dock main menu, where u see the big map. click on the radio on the left for the realism settings.

2. I use TMO, and yes it will rain..sometimes ALOT

3. You will get told to stay withing 50-150 miles of the center of that point, but it depends if you play with any mod, like RSRD. you can find this in your messages you get

have fun

hmm 'k, will look for that radio once i make it back to port...

Only mods i have at the moment is Real Enviroment, and the Light fog / slow waves ones =D.. dont realy plan on addign any more... yet... =)

As for the miles thing. I didnt get a radio message with any 'limit'.. if i remember correctly, it told me to go to the Honshu island... then once i got there, the 'star' greyed out, and now it told me to attack the enimy merchant ships. Since it didnt tell me to stay withen a certain area.. i guess i have free reign?

You don't get a message telling you the mission radius, it's just coded into the game.
If you are playing stock I believe it's 50nm for 24 or 48 hours (mods will change this).
Stay within this for the alloted time and the star will grey out, mission acomplished.
After that it's up to you. You can have free reign and sail to wherever you think a good spot will be, or radio back to base, in effect telling them you have completed the current objective.
I tend to radio in, often they will give you another mission.
I believe that the way the game is coded it's completing these objectives that keeps the top brass happy with you, offering you new boats etc.
I try to do 4 or 5 per patrol, and tend to get a new sub every 3-4 patrols.:)

Yes, stock is 100 nm. With the mods is depends on the mission. But you will see it in the messages you get for that mission.

Thanks guys. Got one final question for ya. Is there a post or guide somewere that tells ya how to use all the tools in the nav map? I got my game threw a dgital purchase... so no books. I downloaded a pdf of the manual but didn't see a section that whent over them, unless I'm just blind heh. I'm guessing there is a way to use the compas to draw a circle on the map the size I need to 'see' a 100 mile 'area'.

Stay within 50nm. I know Beerys guide says 100nm but it is 50nm.

okies.. one last question, and promis this is the last one for a while =D... When im in career patrol (out at sea) and i have a radar equiped in the sub managing screen. If i go to the radar command panel.. i cant turn 'on' either of the Radars.. there any particular reason why i cant turn it on?... and when i go to the actual stations, i can look down and see the on/off switch. But clicking on it does nothing (although i 'can' change the dials...)

Any ideas?

What kind of radar is it? if you just got a Air search radar, i guess thats your problem, if you got a surface search one, you can use it.

You always have air search radar, it is always on and there are no scopes for it.

The scopes are for surface radar and you must install it on the boat.
It doesn't become available till the middle of '42. The scopes will be there but the radar isn't. The best you get till than is a good set of eyeballs and a good sonar man. In most cases that is you doing manual sonar sweeps, you will hear something long before it is reported by your crew.

Tools. Click open the tool above the ruler. Now, when you drag drag the ruler, you will see a compass attached to the line. The bearing of the line can be read from the compass. You need the bearing to plot course. Why? So you can use manual targeting. It may be awhile before you figure it out. See Rocking Robbins and Read Hitman's Tutorial on manual targeting a 100 percent realism. Example: If you draw a course due south and you are at 0 degrees, your would on a true course a course of 180 degrees and you drag a compass in that direction (i.e. from the top of the screen towards the bottom), the boats true heading would be 180 degrees.

Too much rain. Webster has a mod that makes smaller rain drops.

Open the crew station. One of the HUD buttons will allow you to see what equipment is supplied to the sub, such as one or two deck guns, radar, the guns' caliber, etc

seeing how the game manual has about 10 or so useful pages out of 100, there is no such thing as a stupid question. It's not as if anyone can legitimately say "go read the manual". Besides, i find the more nooblet the question is, the more thorough and friendly the response is on this forum, unlike many forums i have seen before.
