We seem not only to disagree with each other more than ever, but to have come almost to detest one another. Politically, culturally, racially, we seem ever ready to go for each others' throats.

all one must do is look at virtually every poll out there
you see polling figures like...
49% YES
51% NO
50% FOR IT
50% AGAINST IT
48% ORANGES
52% APPLES
55% HALF FULL
45% HALF EMPTY
50% COKE
50% PEPSI
48% KIRK
52% PICARD
of course the above polls are completely fictional but im just using that to illustrate the point that there is a remarkable 50/50 divide in America.
While it is true that you get a fluke poll where it is something like...
98% YES, SEX PLEASE!
2% NO SEX FOR ME, THANKS
but for the most part there is a pretty even division.
Link failed for me.
As to the premise? I think it's way over blown. Sure there are hardcore fanatics of every stripe, but I'm still reassured at how well the average Americans I see everyday get along. Being polite and respectful will hardly sell stories anyway.
Even in this forum we get heated debates and arguements, but I like to think anyone of us would still help another poster move his sofa.
I would.

Anything by Pat Buchanan needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Like saying Rush Limbaugh is a "factual news reporter".

MAKING ENDS MEET
Limbaugh: On the official poverty line: "$14,400 for a family of four. That's not so bad" (radio, Nov. 9, 1993).
A few months earlier, Limbaugh was talking about how tough it was to live on more than 10 times that: "I know families that make $180,000 a year and they don't consider themselves rich. Why, it costs them $20,000 a year to send their kids to school" (radio, Aug. 3, 1993).
One is a lie... Guess which one?
A POOR EXCUSE
Limbaugh: "All of these rich guys--like the Kennedy family and Perot--pretending to live just like we do and pretending to understand our trials and tribulations and pretending to represent us, and they get away with this" (TV, Nov. 18, 1993). Versus Limbaugh: Limbaugh's income was an estimated $25 million over the last two years (Forbes, Sept. 26, 1994).
Pandering???
Other quotes:
"I don't give a hoot that [Columbus] gave some Indians a disease that they didn't have immunity against" (Ought to Be, p. 45). [racist]
"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies" (radio; reported in the Flush Rush Quarterly, January 1993). [racist and inflamitory]

And this means what to me? I do not listen to Rush. Last time I listen to Rush was well over 13 years ago. Last I heard he was getting over a drug addiction or some crap. At any rate, again, if all these are lies then these that say them will face charges and or lose there job eventually.

Cmon bring up the drug thing too you know you want to.
The difference is that Mr. Limbaugh does not 'pretend to live like us' nor does he even attempt to promote that pretense. Quite the opposite.

I can solve this.
Starting next month I want all democrats to start relocating to the west coast. I want all republicans to start moving to the east coast. Exception being southerners, you just stand fast because we're going to sell you to Mexico and pay off all our debts.
Exception being southerners, you just stand fast because we're going to sell you to Mexico and pay off all our debts.
Won't work. The check would bounce so high it would go into high earth orbit. A better plan would be to invade Mexico and sell it to the Chinese.

Meh,
Its healthy that people have opposing views be them politlal religious or what ever, thats what 'freedom' is all about and it stops some people from going over board.
Me thinks its the extremists that always wreck everything because they they REFUSE to listen to what they dont want to hear.
You gotta have balance and people have to keep abit of an open mind.
Two opposing camps of extremists can produce civil war (look at 1930s Spain or present day Israel)
One nation of united extremist also yeild VERY bad results (nazi germany anyone?)
War only unites people in the worst way possible.... though hatred.
When people gather in angry mobs, personal moralilty and reasoning just flies out the window.
Nobody wants that s**t.
I say sure; be Liberal/Conservative, capitalist/communist, be christian/muslim, or whatever floats yout boat.....just dont become a sheep
But Saldly, sheepism seems to be a part of human mentailty.
Hey if im anti-extremist does that me an extremist?? :hmmm:

What you are seeing is not a split in america. Instead your seeing those independant minded people standing and watching, seeing the extremism on BOTH sides, and shaking their head. Independants are by far the largest "block" - and as their name suggests, they have varying views. But overall, they represent the center when taken as a whole - and the media is not interested in centrists. They want and need extremism as it "sells" better.

This country has been changing for a long time. Not something thats just starting to happen.
The 11 national censuses conducted between 1900 and 2000 show our nation has undergone a century of tremendous changes in both the makeup of the population and in how Americans live their lives.
100 years ago, most people living in the U.S. were male, under 23 years old, lived in the country and rented their homes. Almost half of all the people in the U.S. lived in households with five or more other people.
Today, most people in the U.S. are female, 35 years old or older and live in metropolitan areas where they own their home. Most people in the U.S. now either live alone or in a households with no more than one or two other people.
Age and sex • Children under 5 years old represented the largest five-year age group in 1900 and again in 1950; but in 2000 the largest groups were 35 to 39 and 40 to 44.
• The percentage of the U.S. population age 65 and over increased in every census from 1900 (4.1 percent) to 1990 (12.6 percent), then declined for the first time in Census 2000 to 12.4 percent.
• From 1900 to 1960, the South had the highest proportion of children under 15 and the lowest proportion of people 65 and over, making it the country's "youngest" region. The West grabbed that title in the latter part of the century.
Race and Hispanic origin
• At the beginning of the century, 1-in-8 U.S. residents was of a race other than white; at the end of the century, the ratio was 1-in-4.
• The black population remained concentrated in the South and the Asian and Pacific Islander population in the West through the century, but these regional concentrations declined sharply by 2000.
• Among the races, the American Indian and Alaska Native population had the highest percentage under age 15 for most of the 20th century.
• From 1980 to 2000, the Hispanic-origin population, which may be of any race, more than doubled.
• The total minority population people of Hispanic origin or of races other than white increased by 88 percent between 1980 and 2000 while the non-Hispanic white population grew by only 7.9 percent.
Housing and household size
• In 1950, for the first time, more than half of all occupied housing units were owned instead of rented. The homeownership rate increased until 1980, decreased slightly in the 1980s and then rose again to its highest level of the century in 2000 66 percent.
• The 1930s was the only decade when the proportion of owner-occupied housing units declined in every region. The largest increase in homeownership rates for each region then occurred in the next decade when the economy recovered from the Depression and experienced post-World War II prosperity.
• Between 1950 and 2000, married-couple households declined from more than three-fourths of all households to just over one-half.
• The proportional share of one-person households increased more than households of any other size. In 1950, one-person households represented 1-in-10 households; by 2000, they comprised 1-in-4.
And with all that..The presidential election still is always close and has been close for a very long time.
