German ladies win the title 5th time in a row, 7th time all in all, after fighting down the English team in the first 60 minutes, then totally sinking it and shutting the door behind it in the remaining time. It was a great display of fitness and individual player's skill donated for the general team interest.
A great fun to watch, and a high class final, I really enjoyed it. And with a record-number of goals shot! The English fought themselves back into the game twice, with high-flying combat spirit and aggressive morale. But after the second effort, it became too much, and they got crushed by a simply superior German team that acted at will. At halftime it was still 2:1. In the second, after their opponents shortening the German lead with their second goal for a result of 3:2, the red-dressed team scrambled and never landed for a rest again, scoring three times in a row for the final standings of 6:2.
Compliments for the english as well, who for two thirds of the match managed to avoid a German walk-over. But then they became tired, and the better fitness of the Germans payed off.
Of 19 matches with the Germans, the English lost 17 and turned 2 into draws. I only wish it would be the same with men's football! :D
the biggest rival for Germany, Sweden, had been kicked out by Norway earlier in the tournament. Probably an internal Scandinavian animosity.
The Germans are the top favourites again for the upcoming next world championship being held in their own country.
The German ladies are international dominators in women's football. That is the result of consistent policies and systematic training efforts of the German football association that are tailored for supporting the national team - a consitency that unfortunately is not to be seen with the German men's national team, because here the clubs of the Bundesliga have too intense economic interests that collide with the needs of a comparing support for the national team like it is being done with the women. the weaker economic power of the lady's Bundesliga thus pays off for the national team, one could say, it is a bit like sporting ideals beating business, while with men it is the other way around. That makes men's Bundesliga the second strongest league in Europe and the fourth strongest in the world - but at the cost of the national team.
The German ladies, on the other hand, won 7 of 10 European Championships that have been held so far, and they won the past 2 of so far 5 world championships (and scored an additonal second place in finals before these wins).
I more and more like women's football, for exactly the reasons it is criticised for by some: that it is less focussed on physical, often even brutal toughness and speed, but focusses more on team choreography, individual playing skill, tactics and technique, if comparing to men's football. I do not like these qualities being neutralised or even minimalised by physical toughness and many fouls alone.
