Post your cell/mobile here. What are you using, what do you like/dislike about it?
I have been using a super cheap Go Phone from Wal-mart for about 2 years, because my last nice phone was drowned on a motorcycle ride. So, I grabbed a $15 phone from Wal-mart and put my chip in it.
Since I am going to the wilds of Denmark next week, I decided to move up to e better phone, one that will work world-wide, has a decent camera, and storage. I chose the Samsung Solstice (http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/mobile/mobile-phones/at-t-phones/SGH-A887ZKAATT/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail).
http://www.samsunghub.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/ATT-solstice.jpg
It is very thin and small, so I can carry it in a pocket, as opposed to a belt clip or holster. It has a 2MP camera, takes video, can be expanded to 8GB with a micro-SD chip. The only cons so far is removing the battery cover--definitely not easy, and knowing I am carrying an expensive phone as opposed to my previous "disposable" one means I actually have to take care of it. :shifty: It was nice not having to worry about it. I guess I'll get used to that.

Why? Cos I manage the company mobile accounts and contracts, so I get all the best deals.:DL
Likes:
So easy to use, fast, manageable and customisable.
Live GPS
Dislikes:
Expensive (don't care though)
Screen can get marked by the stylus over time.
Conclusion, a rich mans Iphone.

Nice phones! =) I love the HTC's. Probly gonna stick with one of the newer ones when we get a new contract in a couple of month. Well depending on the phone price that is.

I have the Samsung Ace that is international capable. I see the Mogal posted by Thomen. We had two in the office. Both broke in under a year. Then again both users of the phone were very rough with them. These phones were not international capable. I like the ACE. Very similar to the Blackberry. To me the cell is a work phone and should be a business like phone. The new touch phones look more like a gadget to me. I see my nephew playing games on it all day and downloading pictures he does not need to be seeing. Anyway, mobile 6.1 is an ok program. I understand Blackberry's program is very good.

Got this around the time it came out (2005-2006?), still works like a charm (12hrs on the bottom of a lake, dropped, kicked, thrown to a wall a few times). Great great great phone. :yep:

I'm temporarily using my old Nokia E60 again because the screen of my new phone broke. Expect this to change in ~three weeks.
This one still does the job, ie. one can call with it, write and receive text messages and e-mail and surf the internet. Everything else is a bonus :)

Yes, seriously.
I don't like cell phones, in fact, I hate them. Only used to receive confirmation codes for online transactions. Once I'm done, it's turned off.
I have a regular fixed-line(landline?) phone; people can reach me when I'm home, I don't want to be disturbed otherwise. :shifty:

Neal, I have the Blackberry Storm.
http://momentumoffailure.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/blackberry-storm-1.jpg
Current deal is about $49 after $100 rebate on 2 year plan. Monthly access is about $30 for the phone, $20 for unlimited web and data.
Pros: One cell phone and one number, can take it world wide. The daughters can reach me in any country, I've used it it Europe, North America, Asia Australia and no problems. Add and drop international at about $10 a month as you travel. Cell, web, music, games, a word processor, great camera, video, voice navigation the world over, traffic reports, calender and address book.
Cons: the screen is a little iffy when you press down with a finger. You gotta get the right letter otherwise the auto word suggest will kick in (you can turn it off).
Options: get a leather carry case for it $10 to protect the face from the usual scratches.

Using a Sony Ericsson W910i at the moment. Wouldn't go near a Blackberry, having spent the last 3 months fixing the buggers :D
http://mobilestormer.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/sony-ericsson-w910i-2.jpg
I like this phone, it's got a nice big screen for watching the odd video, the Walkman music player sounds great, and the browser is pretty good. The bundled software is pretty good, but it's Sony, so there's about 12 different programs required :P
I have a Samsung SGH-E250V
I like it's design, It has large display and many good features (for it's age),
But it has only 13 mb user memory and some other minor problems, but I have it for almost 2 years now and it does what it's supposed to.

Samsung Jét
http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g171/Kloef/SamsungJt-1.jpg
I was going for the Nokia 5800XM,but the guy in the store told me they break down alot, and he didnt want to sell me one.I bought my last 3 phones there and they never broke down once.
So i asked him what do you recommend,he said I-phone:-?....not gonna happen.:timeout:
So i asked him is there an alternative, and he advised me to buy the Samsung Jét...to be honest it was my second choice next to the Nokia 5800XM and i thought it was a slider phone, but its candybar..
Pro's
Fast cpu(fastest on the market at 800mhz plus a separate cpu for the screen)
Battery life
Divx,Xvid and Mpg4 support
Screen is just stunning
Sound is very good,supports 5.1
Good camera,great handycam mode
Touchscreen is great,no more buttons or sore fingers
Its light and comparably small
No 2 cent headphones, these are really high quality!
Con's
Stupid cube button serves no purpose
Screenlock button is in the wrong place and can be activated by light pressure, why not a slider button?
package does not include memory card
Handle with care phone(i'm with you Neal i actually have to take care of it)
Bad support for open-source software
Still have doubts about Samsung phones, its my first
Bit expensive compared to others
Overall i'm pretty satisfied,it can do anything i need a phone to do,i use my phone as a walkman, phone, camera thing and i sometimes look at my e-mail so overall i'm really happy with this one.
But i will allways love Sony-Ericsson(like the one above) the most i guess, but i really wanted touchscreen for its ergonomics,i allways get sore hands when i use a phone too long, not anymore since you tend to change hands alot with touchscreen.

Damn those touchscreen phones looks really good. I might have to go for one after I'm done with the one currently being repaired :D I also had my doubts on iPhone, but getting to play with one for half an hour evaporated most of them. The user interface is hands down the best I've used in any phone so far. Very intuitive, sleek and fast. The device itself might be technologically years behind others, but in practice the UI makes it up and then some. Now if it wasn't made by Apple and expensive as hell...

Just got one, Palm Pre. Will take a little getting used to, but so far I am liking it. Nice thing is I have a 30 day " try and buy " option.
Like the various apps that come with it. Easy to touch zoom in and out stuff, screen size is decent. Battery life does not seem to be that great and the touch stuff does take some getting used to.
Anyway, will keep playing around with the thing and will decide later if I want to keep it.
Now if it wasn't made by Apple and expensive as hell...Exactly,thats why i didnt buy one,i also like to have a phone that you dont see every 5meters walking down the street...
And its too big in my opinion..i allready have a laptop.

I've been using the Samsing i780 smartphone for a while now and am pretty happy with it. The only thing that's utterly useless is the screen once you go outside. Shine a little (sun)light on it and you'll be frowning for a week trying to read what's on it. I reckon it has something to do with it being a early generation touch-screen but still, you'd expect more or better from a brand like that.
Other than that it's my best phone yet.

I love some things about it: the expandable memory, the 3.5mm headphone jack, the full keyboard, its ability to play youtube videos (and almost any video format for that matter). And the touch screen is nice and looks very crisp and classy.
The software is iffy at best though. It resets my screen settings every once in a while, opens to a completely black screen or one with different colored bars all over it.
Other than those shortcomings, I like it a lot.

I have HTC Hero, with a whole range on apps (all free so far), such as:
Advance Task Killer - kills tasks to free memory
Pkt Auctions Ebay - self explanatory!
Metal Detector - handy this, used it to find rotory airer ground spike after winter
Google Sky Maps - impresses the kids pointing out Venus and Mars when visible
F1 Racing - for when I'm not near a TV during a race, lap by lap updates
Buienradar.nl - weather pics (IR satellite, wx radar) with updated every 30 mins
Pretty much anything you want is available. I love getting my android out while my mates have broken iPhones (all too often).
Still waiting for a subsim app, but can use it for the forum anyway.

Don't have a smartphone just yet, but as our contract is up (and I'm tired of living in 2004 with our RAZRs), I'm trying to persuade my dad to spring for smartphones this time around. We're not locked into any particular cell provider, so we're currently looking at:
HTC EVO 4G from Sprint
HTC Incredible from Verizon
Apple iPhone from AT&T
Personally, I'll be happy with any of the above.
Spike88
05-26-10, 08:11 PM
I'm also looking for a smartphone, but I'm stuck with AT&T. I'd also not like to spend 199 on it since I'm building my PC.
I have my iPhone which I love except for the crappy keyboard, lack of flash, the day long totally unexplained internet drops, the rubbish safari browser, and the fact it's made by Apple whom I loath and that by buying it I have apparently signed up for some sort of cult where we worship any bubble shaped, over priced, underpowered gizmo as long as it's painted white. Still love my iPhone, though.
Apps wise, I have news feeders from a dozen news organisations and papers, a translator, a dictionary and a hand gun simulator which helps me through the day.
I had wanted one of those 'Mosquito' apps but decided not to bother when I discovered they only tortured adolescants. I wanted one that tortured everyone but I suppose thats what having a speaker on the phone I can play Primus through is for.
I'm being (almost) facetious. It's decent enough and there is something undeniable cool about having google earth on you when you get lost after being at the pub. This is handier than it seems; i got lost in my own neighbourhood a few months ago and that was on the WAY to the boozer.

I still have my trusty Samsung ACE smart phone. Can not live without the darn thing.
Are you "happy" or are the smartphone to complicated,I prefer in moment pc and diffrent option so maybe later..:)
It useful for different things. I don't like doing forum business on the phone because i find the keyboard too fiddly to use for anything longer than a couple of sentences. I'll tell you something, though. I barely use it at all for making calls or sending texts. I use the email on it all the time. For some reason it seems easier than writing replies on forums - I dont know why.
It's so handy for things like ebay. Ive even gotten over my original fear of using it to pay for stuff and I'm as happy using PayPal on it as on my desktop PC.
I have no interest in watcing movies on it or playing games, But then I wouldnt watch movies on my dek top either. The one thing I would love to be on it is a PDF reader and storage. Oh yeah, and an end to the stupid data tarrifs for using it abroad. It would be nice if the battery lasted a bit longer too.

Being a silly Nokia follower I use an E72.
In end of March the phone went dead after it failed in the middle an update process.
Took almost 4 weeks before I got my phone back. They changed the whole engine so I've got a new IMEI(with the old casing).
what I'm fond of is the GPS. aside from that some minor application. In truth smartphones are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay inferior to a PC.
Haven't really reinstalled the apps I've lost due to the repair.
As about email I was forced to change my secure email password because Nokia's flagship 'smartphone' can't recognize a key from the standard keyboard. The input to the character is simply unavailable.

Yea I changed my phone too
Nokia E72 . . . . because I hated Blackberry fever but wanted a smartphone. I was eyeing the E52 which is small and looked smart but settled for E72 because I read so many complaints on E52 and the closest phone with on par performance(especially that noise canceling feature which I thought kind of neat) was the E72 though it cost quite a lot more. . . .I still think E52 is the value for money.
http://www.hypebeast.com/image/2009/06/nokia-e72.jpg
When I had time to fiddle with a Blackberry I changed my mind about it being an overpriced and over hyped product. The interface is really easy to use compared to my Nokia and seemed to run noticeably smoother or faster too. Yea Blackberry isn't that bad.
As for Android maybe for my next phone few years from now when the soft is fully matured and well upgraded. Not saying it isn't now but the more you wait the more you get when dealing with software or gadget for that matter :-)
Edit: I must say that Nokia is plagued with build quality problem, unstable PC software and seemingly some serious problems in some of their phones as well some tarnished reputation in their customer service department at least in here for the past several years now. It has grown too fat and too complacent. When I learned later that NOKIA was firing its executives I must say good riddance!

So far, very impressed. The only problem is the battery life, if I'm using it heavily, lots of intertubes, gps, etc, it's a charge-a-day device. This is easily solved through ebay, a few extra batteries and a multiple charger. One battery in my jacket, another in my locker at work, etc etc :D

I'm a Apple iPhone 3G 8GB user compliments of the company. Before that I vowed that I would never use a smart phone but quite frankly having the iPhone has been a savior when out of the office on the road or indeed on weekends. It' also great for when I am in bed and couldn't be bothered to grab the laptop and I can just hook in to my wifi. Some of the apps are great. For example using the Formulae 1 Live Timing app when we were at Silverstone for Saturday Qualifying was great as I could see all the times live on my iPhone and even could see each of the 3 sector splits. All that for free and we knew exactly who had qualified where while others were standing around asking who came in what place. Yeah I'm embarrassed to say that I love my iPhone for both work and play.

Thousands of free aps for the Android OS including a metal detector, which has saved my bacon on several occasions. The kids love using Google SkyMaps at night to see planets and I regularly use Facebook and Ebay apps, and obviously use it to get on SUBSIM when not near another method.
I've got lots of friends with fancy-pants iPhones and see the trouble most of them have and it just makes me glad not to have plumped for one of them - I know they're great, but that's only when they work! :smug:

I love it. It just makes phone calls. That's what I want in a cell phone. I don't want a relationship with my cell phone. I don't want my cell phone to manage my life. It is a tool to make cell phone calls when I want to make a cell phone call.
:yeah:

Virgin Mobile "Snapper". Very simple phone with few features. When it finally dies it might make a great hockey puck. :DL
Another Iphone - 16GB 3GS, quite happy with it, they are easy to use and it does everything I want it to do, phone/sms/web browsing/GPS maps/ Music/games.
The down side is that camera isnt great and in terms of 3rd party apps it all abit restricted by the iron fist of Apple, I have though about jail breaking but it seem to be more hassle than it worth.
Also i would say at least half the apps out there are crap anyway.
But -Im Looking forward to W.O.T.A, as its basically SH3 on the Iphone :)
Im not going to get a Iphone 4 either - not worth the money coming from a 3gs...

Bluetooth doesnt make driving any more safe. Its the distraction of talking to some1 that is. I must see about 15 people on their phone every day, and they all drive like S**T. texting is 10 times worse, but drving and multitasking NEVER works.....at least not forever. Earing is the only thing i dont have a problem with. you dont think about eating. you just do it. if your having an coversation you ARE thinking more about them and less about the road.
Sometimes i think people do it just so they can be stereotypically cool. Oh look at me i can talk to people ANd drive (like S**t anyway). Unless your mother just died or theres something Extremely important, theres literally like no reason to talk. And again, its not holding it, its having conversations. only morons cant figure out that holding it and not holding isnt going to make a difference. i can drive with one hand. its not hard. plus, people dont follow traffic laws in the first place. i see retards turning from the middle of the lane, which holds up traffic, i could be going around 80 on the freeway and this a hole is tailgating, and he speeds up to 100 to pass me, like some nutjob. And then theres the retards who pull out of a driveway or something, and they dont give a **** whether or not theres ANY space for them to get into, and often holds up traffic for minutes. and theres the people who dont stop at stop signs, dont yeild, Dont use a turn signal cause they think im a god dam mind reader, and yet they rarely get pulled over. i could be doing NOTHING wrong and get pulled over. i got pulled over because i looked quote "suspicious". WTF Is THAT. its profiling. because im 20 they assume that i drink my ass off and/or smoke pounds of weed. plus i live in a town where nothing happens, so the police force sits on their ass and pulls EVERYONE over they see doing ANY traffic violations. i got aa ticket because about 6 inches of my bumper was in the red. my BUMPER was SIX inches into the red and i get a $200 ticket? THat is absolute BS.
Anyway, i use a disposable pre paid cell phone. all it does is send text and calls. all a phone should do. and im not in a contract, and i have more minutes then i know what to do with.

It's definitely the norm. My Galaxy S lasts about 3-4 days with little use(only sync etc.), but only about a day in normal(== quite heavy) use. The screen is always by far the biggest battery hog, usually followed by 3g radio.

Yep as boring as it looks. What I like about it- well it's battery can last a week if I won't touch it, it's quite durable too, it was dropped and still run's flawlessly.
What I don't like- its looks, stupid headphones that last for a month , bought 2 already and both of them are dead :nope: , not much stuff to do with it but receive and make calls now that I can't listen to music. Camera isn't too good and it lacks a flashlight which would really help me out quite a lot of times, hell why not install a zippo and a knife in it aswell :) Well what I mostly don't like about it is it's age... can't do nothing fancy with it but hey- it gets the job done!

I have an iPhone 3G. I've recently jailbroken it and mucked around with the OS to make it run a bit faster.
I like iPhones, but I hate the endless bugs and problems (including complete data loss) that happen when you plug one of them into iTunes - which is the only way to update the OS (something I don't do anymore). For that reason alone I'm going to look for a non-apple alternative for my next phone.

Hmm, new phone?
Reason i ask is, i have a e71, have had it for about 2 years now, bought it new, am aware that a firmware upgrade is available for it. And because of this (i'm almost certain) it's doing some weird things like: telling me to put sim card in when in fact sim card is in, alarm not going off (dam near slept in today for work) and phone freezes up on me for a few seconds before being responsive again...
Maybe yours is too? Hence the 'playing up'?

Ok so i just bought this phone and it's a really nice phone, big big screen, plenty of features, i'm liking it a lot so far.
Anyone else have this phone?
I'm thinking the only (so far) annoying thing is that when you are 'sliding' up or down to look for a selection, you inadvertantly, more often than not accidently select something you don't wanna, being a touch screen and all...
soo, question is, how to avoid that?

Actually the phone is fine mostly and it's not acting up just that the browser that I use which is Opera often makes memory full error message and a o lot of time just wouldn't want to load anything.
For some reasons I do not understand any chat software wouldn't work on my phone too. I tried using 2 different chat programs but they always tell me that either my username or password is wrong when in fact they are correct!
The push email is still working alright though.
Edit: congrats on the the new phone. Personally I prefer buttons but I'm kind of enthusiastic about Android too.

In early 2008 I got myself an E90 as replacement for my Nokia Communicator 9500. Untill then I changed my Handy every 2 years and mostly had Nokia Mobiles. Since then I got a Palm Pre which I used for about a year before buying a iPhone 3GS after getting an iPad. So far I'm quite happy with both - there are only 2 complaints ... the iPhone cannot be used as a WLAN Hotspot (got myself a mobile cheap 3G/WLAN Hotspot for that) and both devices go through their batteries very fast.
Still I'm happy to have both of em ... and actually having both opens up some interesting possiblities given you use certain apps.

I've had a samsung reclaim for a while now - solid phone for what I need. I thought about going "fancy" with smart phonea hero, but a friend had one and she had nothing but problems with it. Besides, I don't need "apps" - I spend too much time dealing with the phone as it is.
The reclaim can do the basics, surf the net, text, and wonder of wonder, make and accept those weird old school things call "phone calls". I will admit the GPS/driving directions have come in handy on occasion.

It has apps out the wahzoo. So does WM7 so do not shy away from a Windows phone. Android is a great OS. I like it. I like WM7 as well. The key is a phone with some speed in the processor. Let's face it...these are miniature computers! The EVO is up to the task. My wifes newly purchased LG Quantum with the WM7 OS is up to the task. We tried a Samsun Intercept...it was painful man. Dumbed it in under two days.
Word of caution on the touch screen. I have the EVO touch screen. It is not my most favorite for typing. I have tried the new Swype technology with the touch keyboard and it is ok but not something I like either. Take a serious look at a phone with the qwerty keyboards. My wife got the LG Quantum with the slider keyboard. It is a nice phone and comes with the WM7 OS. The EVO comes in a version called the Slide I believe. Also a fast phone. It is a very nice phone overall.
The EVO pictured above and what I have on a scale of 1-10 and 10 being the best...9.5! Half a point for the touch screen keyboard. Not my favorite.

Be sure you have wimax service in your area. I believe you have to pay for a more expensive data plan even if you don't have wimax (Sprint's 4G) available in your area. Even if you do though, you'll probably spend most of your time with with the 4G switched off. My coworker has an EVO and the 4G chews threw battery within a couple hours, even if he's not actively using the device. Still one of the better Android devices out there, though it's getting a little old considering the rate at which new Android devices are launched.

Well, yesterday my HTC Hero plunged into a bucket of water for about 5-6 seconds. I stripped the cover, battery, and cards and left it to dry for about 4 hours (there didn't seem to be much water ingress!). Turned it on and it boots into life, woo hoo! Thought I'd got away with it but noticed that it was permanently in 'headphones' mode, so phoned provider as it was fully insured for such an idiot using it :D
Got a new one arriving tomorrow evening, and now - given a little more time to dry out - this one is working just fine!
As much as I love this phone, I was kinda hoping they'd run out of Heros and would have to give me something a bit newer

Haha, I'm so funny!
Last night at the teaching sessions I am attending, the instructor was talking about how the schools are encouraging students to BYOT (bring your own tech), mainly bring their cell phones and use them to respond to questions by the teacher. (Which I think is goofy and unnecessary, that's what hands and arms are for. Plus: our school district is impoverished, 80% of the kids get free breakfast and free lunch, so wth are they doing with $400 smart phones? :nope: But that's for another thread,,, ) So, the instructor told the class, let's try it, pull out your phone and text blah blah...
So everyone (over 20 people in attendance) pulls out some version of the iphone or android smart phone exept Der Onkel...
I'm still rocking that Samsung Solstice. :rotfl2:

I don't quite know how phones in class are supposed to help, does the teacher ask a question and they all Google the answer, and then text it to the teacher? :hmmm:
Whilst we're in this thread, I upgraded in Jan to a Galaxy SII - I'm going to ignore the SIII that is being hyped-up at the moment.
Using a Motorola Defy which is a great little phone, even if it comes heavily loaded with Motorola bloatware. I bought it as a replacement for my truly awful Samsung Galaxy and have been pretty happy with it, probably because of the 9 months of hell I had with the Samsung. Only problems with it are the aforementioned bloatware and the fact it can be fairly capricious about sending Emails. Aside from that, it's a great handset and almost as good as my old iPhone was.

I finally decided to get a cell phone about 8 months ago. Technically my first one (what can I say, I never really needed one, still not entirely convinced I do now).
Anyhow its a cheap little Alcatel OT-908 (http://shop.windmobile.ca/ProductCatalog/Handsets/HandsetDetails.aspx?id=Alcatel+OneTouch%28WINDCA%2 9&color=green).
Generally speaking it has been a pretty good little phone, but the lack of memory and some bloatware it came with were a problem until recently. I decided to finally get the cell phone unlocked (gonna need it in the US), and I also rooted it, which has solved my memory problems (got rid of all the bloatware and outdated programs, and moved most of my apps over to sd card on an ext2 partition using Link2SD).
Currently I use a Blackberry Torch 9860 paid for by our company and free to use as we see fit.
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/i/z5/rv/2011/10/bb_torch_9860_i1.jpg

iPad. How is that significantly different from a laptop? Other than all the touching and smearing the screen?
It's the simplicity of it, and the ease of use, that got me. I was a long time skeptic when it came to tablets but I got an Ipad at Christmas and fell in love with it. I use it for everything I can now. Take it with me when I go away, use it for reading PDF's, use it for surfing the net, watching TV, listening to music, all the stuff I use my laptop for except it's so much more convenient. recently, I've started using it as a 'Sketchpad' for music production with a couple of apps. One of them allows me to export whatever music I've been messing around with as a WAV via Itunes and I can drop it straight into whatever DJ set I'm currently messing around with or planning.
I think tablets will probably kill laptop sales over the next five years or so. I love my laptop, but with the exception of word processing I can't really think of a single thing I do with it that I couldn't now do on my tablet. Well, games, I guess, but it's only a matter of time before they become powerful enough to run a good portion of the titles on the market.

The poster you were responding to I believe did say "with the exception of word processing".
But there are plenty of keyboard docks/bluetooth keyboards that you can hook up to a tablet, and obviously the hardware is perfectly capable of word processing.

Not being a snot, but my wife got the new I phone. After the contract and accessories it costs 600$ (and a little more)
It does less than my 200$ android phone. Which is mid range.
What is the allure, that makes people wait on line overnite for this crap?
I pay 35$ a month. With no 2 year contract.
Is it some kind of social status thing?
I do not get it, and I am not an apple trasher, but I am not impressed. 600 for what my 200$ phone does faster. with no contract.

But paying more for a phone than I did for my car, that's just crazy.
I just get an evil grinn when i read up on Apples mistakes :arrgh!:
The same kind I get when I see a broken down Audi or BMW

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with technology...both my kids have Iphones but I stick with my old reliable Blackberry.
From what I can gather it is an integration thing. You can connect different Apple products easely without any problems. My boss has an Android phone but is considering an Apple iPhone due to this.
I hope no one here is as stupid as we were...I am warning you now, it is pure crap for the price paid.
I highly doubt that, everything I've read indicates the new iphone 5 is in fact faster than the current top of the line android, the Galaxy S3. When you say it does more, what exactly? What is your phone exactly? I agree with Mcbeck it's a question of integration, even for people like myself who don't have a Mac.

My Son has an iPhone4 and a MacBook pro. I have a small Android (Wildfire S) and a PC. Yes, i'm a PC. :D
I gave him 200 Euro for a Phone, the Rest were from relatives and by selling unused Birthday Gifts on ebay.
For my Android i payed 4,95 eur and 20 eur per month for the Contract. And it makes a good Job, mp3, Navigation, a short call for my workmates when im to late by traffic jam.
The iPhone is good and works too, but i can buy two good Androids for the Money. Apple is some kind of Relegion for young People here in Germany, but i'm an old Atheist. :|\\
Edith says, this Board dont like Euros.
As much I as I dislike Apple in general, Im sticking to my now rather old and beat up Iphone 3gs, for several reasons.
1) I recenly tried out a Samsung Galaxy fore a while, but after using IOS for two years, Android just seems like a bit of a mess TBH, layout is all over the place, too much preinstalled junk I didnt want, the appstore/ market place was annoying and buggy, oh and BLOODY ADVERTS EVERYWHERE!
Lastly W.O.T.A is coming to the iphone early next year, its worth hanging on to it just for that :D IOS is definatly a better choice for games anyway.
That said I'm kind of ashamed to have an iphone, proabably because I associate them with....er richard craniums I suppose! :haha:
For some reason when I see something everyone has got some, it somehow usually makes me want to rebel by not getting one.
Every time I see someone take picture with an Ipad It makes me cringe.

It is a status thing. There is nothing the android cannot do, and better :yep:
Apple gear is a status thing for some (rather superficial) people, yes.
But likewise boycotting Apple products because of the 'status thing' is also a a bit of status thing in its own right. :O:
Some People buy Iphones/Pads because they think its cool, in the fashionable/trendy sense of the word.
Some People Refuse to buy Iphones/Pads without even trying them out, because they like to think they are smarter than those who aspire to be cool.
Either way is being rather childish if you ask me. Who cares what everyone else is doing / thinking, screw that. just get the one YOU like. (finances permitting)
I will say this; they both do the same thing at the end of the day, so its kinda apples and oranges.
Android devices are clearly better value for money, (Apples stuff is always over priced.) So no argument there.
That said, I genuinly find IOS a much nicer OS to use over Android, for me, its easier, cleaner and seems a touch faster too.
And I will reiterate that for mobile games (if you are into them) - Apple wins hands down, because there are much more quality games avaliable on their store.
If I had tried Android and found to be just as pleasent to use, and it had the same range of games avaliable, i would have dumped the Iphone in the blink of an eye.
While Android is not at all bad, its minor annoyances were enough to put me off from trading in my trusty 3gs, thats all. I was tempted by the shiny new Samsung, my Iphone is covered in stratches and cracks, looks like its been in a warzone, but works fine :D
Perhaps Ive been spoiled.

Is it some kind of social status thing?
This ^ before anything else. Or better: it is culture-building, in a social-psychological sense. Apple-salesman gets special training on language, phrases to use, words to avoid, and their training gets compared by specialists to the verbal manipulation that you see taking place in sects. Apple "presentations" also get "celebrated" for that reason in the way they are celebrated. A mental image of a new culture, a new community out there is being established that way, and it gets painted in colours so that people want to become a part of it.
It is the art of subliminal manipulation by advertisement at it's highest level.
And should therefore be banned and forbidden, imo.
Apple does it better than almost anybody else in the commercial world. But they are not the only ones. If you ever visit Wolfsburg and the Volkswagon "manufactury", you either get hooked by the way the car gets celebrated there in an almost religious fashion - the parallels to basic principles of a mass indeed are stunning, from a culture-anthrophological or psychological point of view, or you are disgusted by the way in which a profane material object and tool gets elevated into the status rank of a religious holy revelation. For me, it was the latter. No matter that many people in non-Western countries see us as materialistically deformed, soul-less monkeys. In a way, most of us are, some more than others.
Apple gear is a status thing for some (rather superficial) people, yes.

Well said, plus I don't know, it seems to me some android users (especially the ones who post on some of the tech blogs) are as obnoxious as Mac users back in the day (you know before there was malware discovered for Mac). In addition to games , genuinely find Apple stuff better for music playback, I mean in organising my music library. Of course I've bought third party earbuds and stream from my computer at home to my hifi cause all of these players/phones come packed with crappy earphones. Messy as itunes is in some areas I have not seen a feature as powerful as smartplaylists to organise my mp3s.

I usually upgrade every two years or so, but the iphone is way too expensive and the hardware is inferior to other handsets way bellow its price range, cont comment much on the software but since i can do anything i need on the android with all the comfort i expect there is no point to change that which is not broken.

They all suck. It's nothing but a darn electronic leash. You simply can get away from anything. The leash has become a prerequisite for most jobs. If I could flush my android powered HTC EVO I would.
Rant over.
IPhone seems to be a status thing. I don't understand the allure. I can say I hate android. The updates and ICS have created a Frankenstein. Just a jumbled mess of apps that work for 2.1 but not 2.2 and never will because your device can not update to 2.2 unless your carrier sends it to you. Planned obsolescence.
My wife had a Windows phone. I loved it. Simple, easy, apps worked at no charge. Open source...closed! Android is open with a mess of apps that are not always the greatest. I have android on my tablet. I hate it. I will be looking for a tablet with windows.
The iPod is hands down one kick butt music player. Nothing better IMO.
If i had the time, Id head down to the Apple store to walk up and down the Iphone 5 queue with my tounge stuck under my bottom lip making a long UNNGGHH! sound, because that is a pretty accurate description of what they are doing....queuing for days... to pay silly money.... for a phone...thats a little bit better than the one they currently have.
Or maybe i would just give them a clap, because that level of materialistic idiocy almost deserves a round of applause!

Ok, first of all, DON'T BUY PHONES ON CONTRACT!!!!!
In my use case, (and in many of yours I would believe), it ain't worth it.
Ok, disclaimer: fanboy rant ahead
For phones, you should go with either Symbian or Windows Phone.
If we ignore programs, Symbian is the best cellphone OS out of the box. If you are looking for a flagship device, I would recommend the Pureview 808. It has a stunning 41 megapixel camera(you read that right), NFC, USB on the go(aka, you can plug in your USB sticks to your phone), and an FM transmitter (aka, get your phone to create an FM radio channel, you can listen to music in your car this way). Symbian is the best phone platform, but to bad it is pretty much dying right now. Its a damned shame if you ask me, Symbian sold millions when it was crap, and now is dead when it finally got good.
On the other hand, Windows Phone is GREAT. It is 100% smooth, no lag, and the UI is amazing. Windows Phone is a smooth and delightful platform. I would seriously recommend that you give it a try when Windows Phone 8 comes out.
As for android, I have to say, I'm seriously not impressed. My dad has last year's flagship android, the Motorola Atrix. It has a duel core CPU, and 1gb ram. Yet it LAGS! In its out of the box state, it simply lags when you swipe and whatnot. My Windows Phone, and LG quantum, has much lower specs, yet it runs perfectly smooth. This is simply unacceptable!
Also, Android's update situation is ridiculous. My dad's atrix, is on 2.3, 2 versions behind. And now, with some apps(like chrome) demanding 4.0, his phone can not run many of them.
Android devices are good when they are new, but consider this: In Canada, our contracts are 3 years long, so now one year in, my dad has to live with an outdated, "ancient" (by android standards) phone for two more years.
PS: my recommendation for a phone: The Lumia 920.

I used to have symbian phones...some of the flagships from Nokia and i must say that android devices are way better.
Currently i own Samsung and in terms of smoothness and functionality it beats Nokia in every possible way.
Symbian was great in 2005, today its bloody awful, unless you just want a phone thats a phone.
Oh and on an unrelated note, I really dont miss cycling though 3-4 letters of the alphabet on one button.
The iPod is hands down one kick butt music player. Nothing better IMO.
Well AVG that's why I have an iphone, it's still the best phone for music playback-and I would not want to carry two devices-although if I still had my feature phone I would get an ipod. Same logic that I like games and prefer an all in one device. Or you could get an ipod touch and have games, some internet connection when on wifi and music. YMMV.

Oh come on JU, yes it's silly to upgrade every year or possibly every two years yes. I would disagree that the iphone 5 is an insignificant upgrade. Maybe from a 4s but a huge difference speed wise with my 4 or your 3gs. Plus a much nicer screen (not just size), a much better camera and LTE if you want that. for me, the memory uograde to 64 GB would be worth it-games like WOTA and the Infinity Blade series need tons of space.
Anyhow here is a fair review of the 5 (even if on an Apple site):
http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/reviews/entry/apple-iphone-5-16gb-32gb-64gb/
You said it yourself gaming is one of the iphone's big advantages-as we know from our beloved subsims you more or less have to upgrade to play the latest games. I lasted 8 years (!) on my previous computer before upgrading in 2010, believe me my SH3-GWX and il2-1946 were suffering at the end. The line ups are a bit silly though.
As for other platforms, if I had to choose it would be windows phone. Seriously except for the relative lack of apps a very nice phone and the Nokia hardware is also very nice.
I actually am disliking Android more and more, partly because of the reasons mentioned above such as lack of comprehensive updates etc. I also have a distrust of Google, I know Apple have taken a lot of deserved flak lately, but except for gmail and google earth I have been trying to get away from google. I use Duck Duck Go for search and actually would like to see some viable alternatives for google maps (yes Apple ain't there yet but there are plenty of alternatives). I just don't like one company getting hold of so much info and see Android as just another conduit to info gathering. The main thing are the fans though, I don't see these mythical Apple fanatics online or in real life anymore but the Andorid fans are extremely aggresive, they've become the new Apple fans. :O: Even here every time there is a post about a new game for ios (like WOTA or Pacfic Fleet) you cna be sure to get someone posting "nice game but too bad Apple sux", I find it amusing really. :D
Apple fanatics do indeed still exist, they camp out side Apple stores just so they can be the first to get iphone5, - that is really stupid, Im sorry. :)

I used to have symbian phones...some of the flagships from Nokia and i must say that android devices are way better.
Currently i own Samsung and in terms of smoothness and functionality it beats Nokia in every possible way.
Regarding Symbian, I really feel that it is sad, really.
There used to be a time when Symbian was the best. (pre iPhone, when everyone had the Razr or Blackberry, or Treo) The n95 blew my mind when I first saw it. I mean, compared to everything at the time, it had everything. GPS, Camera, WiFi, EVERYTHING!
But than the iPhone came out and changed everything. Suddenly touchscreens were all the rage. Nokia made some HORRIBLE decisions at the time, resulting in the DISASTER that was the n97. It has a pathetic CPU, with a reactive touchscreen, and charged you an arm and a leg. Around the time, the best Symbian device was actually the Samsung Omnia HD. But because Nokia ran Symbian, the Omnia HD was screwed from the start. Nokia even refused to license the app store to Samsung.
Than, Nokia finally got their crap together(on the hardware front), and released the Symbian ^3 generation. Nobody can deny that the N8, E7, C6-01, and C7 were impressive hardware wise, and at the core, the software was pretty good too. But Nokia ruined it again by releasing it with a ton of bugs, and the UI was crap.
Finally, Nokia kicked out their CEO, hired Elop from Microsoft. Elop saw that Symbian was doomed, for the period from 2008 - 2011, every Symbian device was crap, or at least highly flawed. The Symbian name was unsalvageable.
Thus Symbian was renamed Nokia Belle (Belle was originally the codename, like Vista or Ice cream sandwich). Symbian was pretty much also put on life support, Nokia promised support until at least 2016, with at most one new device a year.
However, Nokia Belle is actually pretty damned good!
and most of all, Symbian at its core has several core advantages against Android or iOS.
Symbian does not require much specs to run smoothly. My dad's Atrix (with a duel core NVidia Tegra II, and 1gb ram) barely runs smooth. Yet Symbian devices with 1ghz CPU and 512 RAM can run buttery smooth.
Symbian supports USB On the Go. This was one of the most amazing features I ever saw, and I truly wished that other phones can do it too. What it is, is that you can simply plug in your USB stick onto your phone (with a USB to Micro-usb adapter), and your phone can recognize it and interact with it.
Finally, Symbian's kernel model is different compared to Android or Windows or iOS. It is special, in that it supports hardware interrupts at the kernel level. So for the user, you see that Symbian phones are the only phones that support Xeon flash. Aka, the pro level flash that are used on real cameras, not simply a lightbulb.
Thus what I am saying is, if you are willing to look past the "Symbian" name (not really even named Symbian anymore), the latest Symbian flagship is a pretty good choice. The Nokia Pureview 808 is a stunning device.
http://st2.gsmarena.com/vv/bigpic/nokia-808-pureview.jpg
review: http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_808_pureview-review-776.php
The camera is the number one cellphone camera, no debate there, its 41 megapixels! Plus it has USB OTG, FM transmitter, NFC, and everything you can want. Plus, the Belle UI is pretty damned good too!
PS, if anyone here is a phone connoisseur like me, here are some devices that you might want to try just to experience them:
The Palm Pre 2, HP veer, or the HP pre 3 is something you have to experience. WebOS is an AMAZING OS, just constrained by the horrible hardware on the original pre.
The Nokia N9 is also something to look out for, the Device itself is stunning, and the OS is Meego (not Symbian). Meego is dead, Elop killed it, but it is a pretty damned good OS, at least worth a try.
Yeah...belle was good upgrade.
I also like nokia phones in terms of design looks and durability.
Lets hope win8 will catch on as mobile os.It should solve the functionality issue.
^ Very informative post there, The_Tyrant, thanks

I'm currently using an LG 900G, but only because I got it for $40. It does more than I'll ever want, and I wouldn't have paid that much except I wanted the qwerty keypad. If not for that I would have paid $20 for another bottom-of-the-line Nokia. I liked having a phone that didn't do anything but make calls.
I pay $15 per month for 200 minutes through Net10, but that only works if you hardly ever talk to anyone.
I'm not really cheap, just really poor.

Qwerty keyboard is a good idea to start with...you can also try to think of your phone as sort of pocket PC or pocket Swiss knife that you can take everywhere.

I like my android, I watch movies on break at work with my buddy. You tube app, ESPN score updates for my sports teams.
And half the price per month, and 1/6 the price for a decent phone. (I only got a 3g phone) Plus I can tell them to buzz off at any time.

I really don't get the iPhones are expensive talk. Seriously
iPhones are prices competatively with the flagship devices of the other major platforms.
After all, on a 2 year contract the iPhone 5 starts at 199, just like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Droid Razr, and the Blackberry Bold 9900.
199$ is the on contract price for most flagship devices. The iPhone is priced competatively, and is not overpriced compared to other flagship devices.
Off contract, these flagships are all 500-800$. Again, the iPhone is not overprices compared to comparable devices within its class.
PS: Ok, if you are going to buy a phone on contract, don't get the "0$ on contract" devices. Get the premium top of the line device. Why?
Well over the course of 2-3 years, the phone bill adds up to thousands of dollars. The extra 100-200$ doesn't seem like much at all.
Plus, since you will be living with the device for the next 2-3 years of your life (arguably more important than your wife), I sincearly recommend that you get a flagship device, and not a bargin bucket cheapo device. The level of support and the experiance is just so much better.

Yes, the iPhone 5 rocks from its specs compared to its predecessors.
The GPU of the iPad 1 and iPhone/iPod touch 4 is too slow for the number of pixels on the screen. It's the same GPU that the 3GS uses. During the last two years this was always a problem for me (developing games).
When I started with the new Seehund midget submarine version of WOTA I've made a completely new water for the game. Now WOTA is really CPU bound on the 3GS, on the iPad 1 it still suffers from pixel fill rate problems due to the underpowered GPU. When it comes to gaming iPad 2 and 4S are great devices WOTA runs at 60fps with additional eyecandy on them.
Because of the CPU problems on the 3GS I've compared CPU benchmarks of all iOS devices to find out what extras will be possible on which device (I just can't afford to buy them all and the low end devices are most important for testing anyway)
The iPhone 5 is extremely fast! It's a HUGE difference and this difference is huge compared to the 4S, actually when it comes to CPU and memory performance the difference between the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S is larger than the difference between the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 3GS! Calling the iPhone 5 an insignificant upgrade is just wrong - the iPhone 4 was an insignificant upgrade:
iPhone 5 compared to iPhone 4S:
integer performance: 2.26 times faster
floating point performance: 2.83 times faster
memory performance: 2.49 times faster
memory stream performance: 3.17 times faster
iPhone 4S compared to iPhone 3GS:
integer performance: 2.47 times faster
floating point performance: 2.64 times faster
memory performance: 1.68 times faster
memory stream performance: 1.33 times faster
iPhone 4S compared to iPhone 4:
integer performance: 1.92 times faster
floating point performance: 2.03 times faster
memory performance: 1.26 times faster
memory stream performance: 1.05 times faster
iPhone 4 compared to iPhone 3GS:
integer performance: 1.29 times faster
floating point performance: 1.29 times faster
memory performance: 1.68 times faster
memory stream performance: 1.33 times faster
Also the 3 core GPU is a good upgrade compared to the 4S.
…
I do not get it, and I am not an apple trasher, but I am not impressed. 600 for what my 200$ phone does faster. with no contract.
I hope no one here is as stupid as we were...I am warning you now, it is pure crap for the price paid.
My two cents {
You get the iPhone 5 starting at 1,- EUR with a contract (in germany).
Currently the iPhone 5 is the fastest smartphone on the market, as usual this will change within the year. The pricing of the comparable android high end smartphones is almost identical. It might be a bad buy next summer but currently it is not… except that 600 EUR for a phone (without contract) might be a bit crazy anyway.
But compared to android you will have some advantages:
1. free unexpected adventures due to the new map app :haha:
2. almost no risk to install malware apps
3. more apps and games
4. This is the SUBSIM forum - well... WOTA: Wolves of the Atlantic:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=163753
I see this android vs iOS thing from a developers point of view:
There are more android phones (68%) out there than iOS phones (17%) but the statistics show that 63.48% of the mobile internet accesses comes from iOS devices (android = 22.1% - I'll guess the iPod touch is included in the statistics) - so it seems that iOS devices are more in use than android devices. Maybe a lot of people who don't really need a smartphone just take one for $1,- with their contract but never use it except for phoning?
Same for sales numbers of Apps. Most developers sell 10 times more per app on the iOS app store than on all android markets combined. And the pirated to sale ratio on iOS is already pretty high at about 95:1 - unless you are in the top 1000 you will sell exactly: nothing, ZERO - yes more than 649,000 apps have 0 sales a day - to make any money that will at least pay your time of development you will have to reach the top 300 of games in the USA and stay there for a long time - a highly competitive market with dumping prices, rude customer reviews and on android it is even worse because sales are lower.
It's terrible to try to support all the different android devices, GPUs, screen sizes, Systems etc. - you will end up with ten times the hassle and bad reviews for 1/10 of the generated income.
That's why WOTA for android will come out after a Mac & PC release. and why I would always recommend iOS. ;-) But it's a biased view and someone who just needs a phone with mobile browser, email app, maps etc. might be as happy as an iPhone customer. But I doubt those kind of people would ever seriously debate about android vs iOS. It's almost the same old boring war like Mac vs PC.

If you are looking for a new Android phone, I suggest you consider the Galaxy Nexus: https://play.google.com/store/devices?feature=corpus_selector
Of all the Androids, the Nexus line is the only line that is created by Google itself, and is guaranteed updates. No carrier bloatware, no junk at all. Whereas my dad is still waiting for a 4.0 update (probably not getting it), the Galaxy Nexus is already on 4.1
It currently goes for 300 something unlocked direct from google, I personally recommend it, it is the best Android device out there.
Samsung s3 is great phone too.
If you are a little bit technical you can always root it and install whatever flavour of android you like.

I will sure have a look at the S3 mini next week (http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/10/samsung-galaxy-s3-mini-and-galaxy-music-to-be-unveiled-on-the-11th-of-october/), that may be what I am looking for.

If you don't really have a device or carrier preference, just looking for a small phone under 4.6 inches, than I would recommend the Motorola Driod Razr M (Verizon), or its brother the Atrix HD (AT&T). These phones on the inside are just as good as the s3 or the HTC One X, but they are smaller.
Or if you are willing to wait a bit, I would seriously recommend waiting for Windows Phone 8. The Nokia Lumia 820 gets my big recommendation. It is coming probably all the big carriers except Sprint.

Everybody has a $50 unlimited talk/text plan these days. As I said, I pay $15 a month for 200 minutes, and I don't use them all. Also, I can get a Nokia or Samsung for $19.99 if I want. But then, you get what you pay for.

Shortcomings, It is only a 3G
But it is wi-fi enabled, which helps.
It is definitly a charge every day phone, if you play vids, or use the internet alot like I do. If you bog it down with apps it gets bad with power management.
Google play is not as finely tuned as the Apple App store, and some of the apps are bug ridden messes.
Volume is nice, though it is not a boombox, it has a camcorder/camera with a light.
I pay 35$, unlimited info and texting, and either 200 or 300 minutes, I forgot, but I do not use all the minutes. (no contract)
Not saying the Iphone 5 is bad, just saying it is more than I need. And too pricey. My old lady loves it, I am not that impressed. Not knocking others if they enjoy it. I would rather get something cheaper and functional, and pay my bills or buy a PC game with the difference. Plus the contract, turned me off nearly instantly before i even saw what it could do. The one carrier nonsense they had with earlier I-phones is another.
And it is very good for both sides, that there is competition, the consumers win for once.

I would go against having a limit on info, depending on how you use it. Every time you load a page it counts against you. Hit the back button by mistake and watch your pennies tick away when you try to go back.
Talk minutes is awesome.
I am not sure how apps work, I get scoring updates for my sports teams with an app, and I believe it is internet driven, alot of apps are.
I would strongly suggest getting an unlimited info plan, depending on how you use it, but I use the you tube app alot. So it could just be my overuse of internet, that makes me make this suggestion.
It is of course up to you, but once you go over your alloted bandwidth, they bend you over monetarily, or outright cut you off, and it may interfere with apps.
Also check coverage maps, I am spoiled here in the NE USA, whereas someone in rural Indiana might not have the same results as me.
Not saying you're in hicksville (I don't mess with Texas). Just some carriers are stronger in some places than others, especially the smaller "budget carriers"

Hey, I can still use my number on these prepaids, right? How does that work?
Ok, so for your number, please talk to your carrier. You should be able to keep it.
I suggest possibly waiting a bit, since right now, most US carriers outside AT&T and Verizon don't really have any really compelling lower end offerings.
Now why do I suggest you wait a bit? well lets consider the common smartphone platforms:
Blackberry and Windows Phone is no go right now, since they will both shortly release new offerings, and current phones will not be upgradeable.
There is a big slew of new andriods coming soon (Verizon is your carrier if you want andriod, they have the best devices).
Only the iPhone is worth buying right now (the iPhone will remain at its price untill a month before they release the next one).
Assuming that you do not want the iPhone, than it is a good idea to wait untill the holiday season swings in (unless you really need a phone now).
Now a few tips from me:
1. Don't skimp on the phone
You will be using this device every day for the next 2 years, don't skimp on the phone. Get something good, with update potential, and most of all, good build quality. And here is the thing, if you want decent amounts of data, the price of the phone is really nothing. After all, data is INSAINLY expansive, and after paying for it for 2 years or so, the money you spend on the phone seems insignificant.
2. If you don't want data (or if you are going T-mobile), don't sign a plan.
Hey, if you just want a smartphone, without data, buy it off contract and use pay as you go. Or if you are on T-mobile, they will discount your plan if you bring your phone. However, if you want lots of fast data, than maybe signing a plan is a good choice.
3. When buying andriod, DO NOT buy a phone with Gingerbread(2.3)
I cannot stress this enough, buying an Andriod with Gingerbread this late in the game is NOT a good idea. Gingerbread is 2 versions behind the latest, and thus, many apps (like chrome for example) do not work. Also, trust me, 4.* is a LOT better than 2.*
4. Always check ebay
Hey, there are lots of great brand new phones being sold on ebay daily, you might as well try to buy one there. But remember to check if it works on your carrier.
Now my recommendations:
If you would like T-mobile:
HTC One S: http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=HTC-One-S-Gradient-Blue
This is a top of the line phone under 4.6 inches. The specs inside are absolutely top of the line, and most of all, it ships with Android 4.0, with a 4.1 upgrade coming soon.
You should expect to pay around 400$ for it off contract.
If you would like Virgin Mobile:
HTC one V: http://www.virginmobileusa.com/shop/cell-phones/htc-one-v-phone/features/
The one S's little brother. The specs are much weaker, but unlike most other budget handsets, you get Android 4.0 (with a good chance of a future 4.1 update)
Expect to pay around $200.
If you would like AT&T:
Get the Atrix HD: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/motorola/atrix-hd-modern-white.html
This is a rarity, its a phone that is similarly specced against Verizon's Droid Razr HD, but cheaper. And most of all, smaller. Plus, now that Google owns Motorola Mobility, I find that motorola's phones are all pretty damned good software wise.
If you would like Verizon:
Verizon is the Android powerhouse. Lots of good handsets.
Lots of good devices:
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=5892
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=5947
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=5845
If you would like Sprint:
Samsung Galaxy Victory: http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/phone_details.jsp?prodId=dvc6550002prd&deviceSKUId=65600023&flow=AAL&planSKUId=null&tabId=dt_phones&ptn=
Its a rare good lower end device with good battery life, and thus, gets my recommendation.
PS: If you want data, get at least 1gb. You will burn through 30mb in 5 visits to Subsim.
PPS: For all carriers except Verizon and Sprint, check ebay for a phone. Lots of good phones available there, just that Verizon and Sprint probably won't let a phone you didn't buy from them on the network. Expect to pay 50% less than the list price.

I have my wife and kids on ATT. Its a crock. The monthly low fee balloons for no particular reason. When I was a kid there was no added expense in the household for my folks to contend with. Cellphones and cable being our burden. Anyway, I think Cricket is the least expensive service.
If your phone accepts the SIM card from another carrier it will work. My daughters phone just died. She had one month to upgrade time. We purchased a twenty buck phone at the mart. Put her SIM card in the cheapy and it works. Once the time comes for the upgrade we go upgrade. Like I said, its all about the SIM card. So, if the carrier gives you their SIM card your current phone should work on their network. I believe they can program your current number into the SIM card as well.

Most modern phones have wifi, so don't worry about that.
I would seriously recommend 4.0 over 2.3, the difference is quite big!
Go on ebay, or to best buy to get your phones, I usually find that they have much better deals than your carrier stores.

AT&T uses standard GSM bands, aka you have the biggest choice in phones.

Yep, and that is why I often suggest unbranded phones (aka phones that are not under carrier control for updates). With good companies like Sony, you would usually get at least 1 - 2 updates.
Or, get a nexus directly from google (Verizon often witholds updates)
Or even better, get a Windows Phone. Every single windows phone 7 got all the updates, and every single windows phone 8 is guranteed to give at least 18 months worth of updates (starting from launch day). Even LG(who is horrible with updates), rolled out all the updates for their Windows Phones.

Last few times I looked in this thread I saw a Virgin mobile ad.

Do you want an android Neal, or happy with your phone and hate your plan?
I use mine for easy internet access and the free GPS program. (verizon wanted 5$ a month to use gps on my old phone.)
I gotta travel, and NJ has so many roads for such a small state, I get lost sometimes. ;) Plus I am dumber than a pile of bricks, so that helps with my getting lost on roads I should know.
If it is your plan you hate, then go with a budget carrier (virgin/t-mobile) and use a cheapo 40$ phone. Budget does not equal bad, Virgin has better reception than my old Verizon phone in my location.
If you want an upgrade then follow one of the many suggestions you got above.
It all depends on what you need.
When it comes to gaming iPad 2 and 4S are great devices WOTA runs at 60fps with additional eyecandy on them.

floating point performance: 2.64 times faster
memory performance: 1.68 times faster
memory stream performance: 1.33 times faster
iPhone 4S compared to iPhone 4:
integer performance: 1.92 times faster

Also the 3 core GPU is a good upgrade compared to the 4S.
My two cents {

}
Very good post, blows some of the arguments on this thread out of the water, heck I'm going to post to this on other forums. Well only some-if you actually just want to make phone calls on your phone ah well. :rotfl2:

Simply put it...you dont need to go broke to have some cool device with usfull features...there is a lot of choice.

Iphone priced similarly to android handsets? Is this a joke?
Even the S 3, which I concider overpriced is at least 150 euros cheaper than the bloody iphone, hell, its cheaper than the previous generation iphones though by a smaller margin.

I would dispute that
My carrier (Rogers) sells the iPhone 5 at about the same price of the s3 (and other top of the line androids)
Hell, if we want to talk overpriced, Verizon sells the blackberry 9930 for a bit more than the iPhone 5, whereas the iPhone 5 is priced at the same as the Droid razr MAXX

Lg Optimus Elite. And carrier is virgin mobile. Go figure, not a sprint verizon or AT&T in there. It isn't a Samsung Galaxy, but it is more than adequate.
Ok, I went with the same phone, LG Optimus Elite, Virgin Mobile Paylo plan, $35 a month (not $35 + fees and tax = $45).

iPhone 4 here, quite happy with it and actually like the Apple ecosystem-at least for music/apps. While I like the "smartphone" part of it, it also has allowed me to skip getting an ipod and a mobile gaming system (can't replace PC gaming of course but the quality of many ios games has actually surprised me).

Oh, that is snothing, just wait for Windows 8 - MS obviously tries to change the game for PCs as well and turn the Windows PC into a closed system like Apple and its depending iUniverse.
Background: if MS succeeds and people tolerate W8, it will spell agony for games on PCs, but maybe will bring Linux the long awaited breakthrough not only on servers, but home PCs as well. Steam starts to develope for Linux now, in reaction to W8. The Minecraft developer has refused a MS request to let his game being licensed for W8. I hope more game studios and developers do like this. Business is not eager to buy W8 either, since they have longer updating cycles for basic software, than private households. If now gamers could be sensible enough for the future of gaming, and boycott W8 as well, then there is hope that the PC will remain to be a free gaming platform for some years longer. Windows 8 must fail - we cannot afford to let it become a success for MS. It would kill the PC as we know it. Turning the PC into a closed universe like Apple is the real drive behind Microsoft pushing tablets and W8 Metro. The latter are only baits to soften up resistance to their real ambition.
The more costly a W8 debacle for MS becomes, the better.

Skybird, you have to differentiate between Windows 8 desktop and Windows 8 Metro apps. Windows 8 desktop programs remain as today.
Metro is more or less in the first version a touch-based OS and I do not think that on the desktop it becomes the major flavor in the foreseeable future.
I know a lot of people say the desktop is dead, blabla ;) but I do not believe that. Often the same people complain that they do not wanna work with a tablet for more than an hour.
I also do not like closed systems but we have to tolerate that probably the majority of end users exactly wanna having this due to security and stability issues. 95% of the non IT-people also do not install apps on web pages...they just go to the market.
So, personally I hope MS has success so that Apple gets a further competitor.
From a developer perspective MS has the best development tools and framework, which I like very much.
Are not you people tired of ranting about every new version of windows and how the previous one was the best...so far win95 was the best one or 3.11.
Seriously...

You know, I'm not an Apple hater, and the first iPhone really set the trend for cool, useable smart phones. But after having my LG Optimus Elite for a week, and comparing it to my daughter's iPhone 4, I have to say I am struck by the difference in the cases. The iPhone has a really square edge, it's a 90 degree angle that's not really very contoured

Newer phones are sort of cross between phone and tablet hence the shape and the big screen.
It is sort of compromise, if they make it any bigger it will be sort of ridiculous it is phone after all...

Great camera
Great voice calls, clarity and volume
Sturdy-I've dropped it about a dozen times and no damage
Acceptable for impromptu web surfing
Great for reading books through the Kindle app when I don't want to bring the Kindle

I use a Samsung S5 and have always used a Samsung handset but the other day I had a chance to have a play with a HTC M8 and to tell the truth it is one great handset and has loads of extras to keep you busy for weeks
Oh yes and it also makes clear calls with the iPhone 6 having a few disappointing things going on and to be honest this is a real rival to Samsung as well.
This is the first time I have seriously looked to change to another make of handset. :hmmm:

I tried a newer phone but the speakers wouldn't allow me to hear-I'm deaf- so it just sits charging in the auto console . I always can call 911 even though it's not activated. I Bluetooth to a visor speaker for better hearing and hands free- a big ticket offense in CA! http://i.pgcdn.com/pi/108/05/64/1080564235_125.jpg$55.00 per month: 1000 minutes free and unlimited texts...I m a customer since the '80's, so I'm 'grandfathered' in on my plan! EDIT: my wife and daughter are the smartphone users...they inform me what I need to Know...when I need to know it! Saves me a lot of 21st century aggravation!:D
I'm still using the same LG 900G I reported two years ago, and I'm still paying $15 for 200 minutes. My average talk time per month is less than five minutes, and I have almost 3000 backed up because they do rollovers.
Hey, there's a lot to be said for getting the max use out of a piece of equipment. I am not planning to change phones any time soon.

Great news! Verizon (and Sprint, ATT) are offering double the data this month for existing plans.:rock::rock::rock:

So, instead of struggling to get by with 10GB a month, they bumped me up to 30GB for the same monthly fee! Whee!
Yeah, I know, that's actually 3X increase, I guess my account was one they wanted to keep, I pay on time each month...

LG announced its G4.... looks like a superb device, but the G3 was bigger than the G2, and it keeps getting bigger :(

Guess I'll stick with my trusty G2.

Well, I've dropped my trusty G2 a few times in the last month, and now several spots on the touch screen no longer work :( I have to turn the phone sideways for those spots, turn it back for others... may be upgrading sooner than expected.
