There I was, somewhere west of Ireland. My deck watch spotted a single merchantman about five Km. off. Calm seas, so I thought: "Why waste a torpedo!! Man the deck gun!!!," comfortable in the knowledge that we could kill this ship before they could get the range on us (if they were armed). Lo and behold, my watch officer tells me "no ammo available"!!
I trust this is a bug? I'd just updgraded my sub, and I'm playing w/GWX 3.0.

you have to load the first round yourself. go to the DG and click on the shell on the right side. you will then have plenty of ammo

Not a GWX user, but is there crew on the management thing? As in, do you have crew men on the flak gun from the management pannel? otherwise, no idea
Yep, it was fully crewed.

I am not so sure about this. When I man the DG and give permission to fire, either by marking it with the binoculars or on the gun menu, they start firing. Surely, with a delay on the first round, but they do fire without me going to the deck gun for a manual load.

When you are behind the canon you have to click on the
granade icon right under in the screen.
Correct, Leandros. I never had any problems either, the boys always load the first round after I tell them to engage a target, just takes a while that's all

Simply click on the shell icon (bottom right).

He is offline now, but I assume (he is at subsim since 2006), that he would know how to load the deck gun? :hmmm:

Well GWX3.0 wasn't available in 2006 and judging by the hundreds or even thousands of queries I've responded too there might be the possibility he was unaware of the empty icon shell feature.
Of course that's simply me assuming if he did, he may never have felt the need to post in the first place. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Maybe he use SH3 Commander with malfunctions and sabotage :D
Even I know (and me dummy), how to load the shells. :03:

Well, we should differentiate between using the gun in own person and ordering the crew to use it.......

Not going to comment on the inability to load that first shell (though I noticed that if, instead of issuing the "Target nearest merchantman" command, you use the binoculars+spacebar you don't have to load it), but re: the delay in firing the first round - switch to external view (F12 or the "." key) and you'll see the gun crew traversing the deck gun onto the target - hence the delay :DL

Same here. I never shoot the gun manually, and I've never had to go load it.

Agree with Steve for 100% here ...
A real Kaleun, would never sit behind a deck gun, that's why it is almost impossible to do it with OLC Gold MkII mod.
You have crew ... let they do the job done. :DL

One consideration though....unless the gun crew are well trained and suitably qualified, they tend to waste approximately 40/50% of the available ammo.
I use my ammo mod for a reason :smug:

Nope.....the mod allows for 250 shells and records show at least one boat carried 377 :|\\

OKAY, I give up :DL
But I rather spent more shells then sitting (as a Kaleun) behind the deck gun. :03:
