Computer Desk

In my move earlier this year my computer desk was badly damaged to the point of being useless... i have Frankensteined a computer desk out of what was left over but it is temporary to say the least.

I am thinking of using MDF and wood screws and various colors of paint to build myself a new computer desk which is reminiscent of a U-boat interior.

the desk will partially enclose overhead... i was thinking of adding some sort of shelving.

Im working on a sketch in google sketchup.

anyone tried this?

i think it is a neat idea, especially since i spend so much time playing SH3 and the upcoming SH5 will be no doubt installed on my computer :D

have any suggestions? recommendations etc?

nope, no pic yet. But as far as your desk idea, I'm no fan of MDF at all! But at the same time I realize it can be a rather inexpensive material. If it were me building this I would probably go the route of particle board or pine. My experience with particle board is that it has been much stronger than the MDF I've run into. Depending on what you have available for wood working tools pine might be out of your market though.

i have no idea why the image problems are cropping up.

i have done nothing different than ever before. but it was showing fine on my screen.

circular saw, jigsaw, cordless drill with bits through half inch and my bare hands.

i figured on making some sort of modular construction.

the "ribs" would be the hard part... however i thought about cutting out a rib and using it as a template for the others.

one rib would be 4 inches wide and would consist of a 1 inch wide arc bolted and wood glued together to form the 4" rib

i thought that perhaps this would give it that "steel built" sort of look to do it that way

edit: modular would have to be the way... otherwise this baby is stuck in whatever room it ends up in unless you just disassemble the whole thing.

Yeah the ribs are gonna be the hard part of the project, both physically and financially. It might help to get the right curvature if you think of how big the complete frame would be. IIRC the frames on my boat where rolled steel and welded together. I'm not sure about early boat frames, but they could have been welded in the same fashion. Therefore bolts may not look "right".

I would recommend two things GR. :DL

1. inexspensive router and the bits are even more pricey.
but, will give a more professional fit and look.

2. Replace that picture with one of your wife. :haha:

That is probably the most important part.. hehe

The while idea is nice, tho. Unfortunately I do not have space for something like that anymore, and your design would be to small for for me anyways. Don't have enough room on my desk allready. :nope:

I would avoid MDF.
For the ribs the easiest solution as your picture has 4 would be to buy two pre formed timber arches and cut them in half

If you flip that picture over, it looks like the Keel of a wooden boat.

Search Craigslist in your area, look in the free section. I see boats (in terrible condition) in there occasionally.

Just a thought...
