Hello

I've searched the forums and dound a few suggestions but none have fixed my crash issue with SH3.

I bought the game about a week ago. It runs for about 7 or 8 minutes before seemingly random blackscreening then requireing and alt-ctrl-del. There doesen't appear to be a specific event or keystroke tied to the crash.

The error I get is a 'Encountered and error and needs to close' with the modname at fault listed as: msvcr71.dll

Played with audio hardware acceleration levels, particle density to 0, replaced all instances of msvcr71.dll with a pure file. Complete reinstall (thats all files inc others in my docs etc removed) CPU and GPU temperatures are normal, no mods. 1.4 version is straight from the disc I bought. Meet all system specs.

Athlon 64 3200+
1gig RAM
ATi 9600 XT

Any ideas anyone?

Much apreciated.

Peg

The DLL file Msvcr71.dll belongs to the Microsoft Visual C Runtime library version 7.1 engine. This file is a core Windows component used by several Windows applications such as Microsoft Visual Studio.NET versions 2002, 2003 & 2005 and Microsoft Office version 2002 & 2003 that have Microsoft C++.NET. This DLL file is also used by a few other Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications.
Your Windows XP operating system and other Microsoft and non-Microsoft applications need the msvcrt.dll file to control and display items such as mouse events, drop-down menus, scroll bars and buttons.

Peg, Welcome aboard.
Do you have any other trouble with your computer. Since this file is from the operating system and not the game, if this file is the cause of the malfunction you should have some problems elsewhere.
You might check with Microsoft to see if you can reinstall the Microsoft Visual C Runtime library version 7.1 engine, or at least get the file from them to replace the msvcr71.dll file. I think there is a site on the net where you can get some of the .dll files, but I am not sure.
You state you replaced the file. Where did you get the replacement?

Hey guys thanks for your replys.

I downloaded the file from dllfiles.com unfortunatly I can't replace the windows one since it's always in use when windows is running. I think if I terminated C++ operations in task manager It would crash XP.

Thers a windows mvsc71 and 3 in the SH directory.

I have no other problems with my PC.

Reinstalled MS C++ runtime library, Updated .net to 3.5 and updated Direct X to March 2009. Also defragged and reg cleaned.

After much toying about with various things and research. I've narrowed it down to being related to sound in some way. Managing to get about 12 minutes play now but still crashing. :(

I have an SB Live! 5.1 audio card. Fairly ancient but meets minimum spec.

If you still have problems, download unlocker (free program) ... and delete the dll file which is in use (it will go to your recycle bin), then download another from dllfiles.com.

Maybe this would help? :hmmm:

I've exhausted all ideas, gonna give up on this one, spent a lot of time trying to get it working to no avail. Have done what you said Rafael, no luck. Closed down all accociated processes with that file on a fresh install after replacing the .dll and the game still crashes.

Cheers for your help guys.

PS: I installed it on my dad's laptop with Vista and it works fine. But obviously, thats his laptop and not my pc lol :(

Oh wait! If you're running vista, take a look at the special Windows vista forum. http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=105144

If your computer has Windows XP (I have a MacBook Pro" with BootCamp so I can run Windows), try to format and start with a fresh new Windows XP installation.

I really cannot understand that you're unable to run SH3!?! You don't need Service Pack 3 ... puzzle for me? :know:

If you format, don't install .net from Windows and you will see that all will works fine.

Good luck! :salute:
