Long version: Started a new campaign in TMO and finished the first objective (drop off spy). I got the COMPLETED tag but no new objective. I radioed HQ and got a response thanking me for completing the objective and to continue waiting for further instructions or return to base.
I figured I'd head down to Java for refueling and knock off whatever enemy shipping I could en route. I happened on a convoy and took out a couple of nice freighters and radioed back to HQ to tell them of my score and report the convoy. (That's two separate radio reports).
I was told still to continue patrolling or return to base.
By now I was half a day away from the ports of Kawasaki / Yokahama and Tokyo. I timed it for a night entry and snuck in and found two carriers and the Kongo. I found no resistence inside the port so I took out the Kongo Battleship and a destroyer docked at his port side. I sneaked back out avoiding the sub hunters at the entrance and radioed into HQ when I could.
That was a mistake.
Short version: Now they tell me to advance to area 'Abandon' and patrol for 4 days. Now I've got JUST enough fuel to make it back to Midway, but certainly not enough for this mission.
Is HQ trying to get rid of me? Do I refuel first? Do I skip that mission or does skipping missions count against you?:O:

If your boats in good shape I'd go refuel and rearm and go back out on the hunt! :ping:

You will get as many missions as you ask for. When you know your low on fuel....it's time to head back to base. With TMO you have the fuel icons that tell you maximum range at current speed to the waypoints you set, so always use that as a guide.

You don't get punished per say for not completing extra missions. If you've completed your primary mission and keep clicking the status buttom it will usually keep giving you more missions.

You will get as many missions as you ask for.

That's my problem... I didn't realize radioing into HQ was a request for a new mission. I thought it was sending STATUS REPORT, like hey, I just sunk two ships. Or, I'm over here now boss!
I figured missions were doled out as you completed them, regardless of whether or not you radioed in.
Do you have to radio in to get objectives?

That's basically what it is...Your given a mission to start. If you hit status without completing it...it obvious tells you to complete it. So if you do and send status it usually will send you somewhere else. Sometimes you're given a mission that's two parts...get to a zone then you must sink a ship, others you can just patrol for the amount of time and missions complete.

Yes, you have to radio in to get more missions. Sometimes it will tell you to just patrol an area that you want, return to base, ect. Your the Captain, you make decisions based on your ammo, damage, ect.

You do get points for missions, so the more you do the better. I prefer to do one or two missions, but if a big battle is getting ready to take place, I'll go out on my own. I prefer chasing historical battles than doing patrols.

Also know if you hit status or report a convoy, they can vector in on you or it may alert ships. Not something you want to do when ships are in sight too often. As far as I know you get no points for reporting a convoy, so it's a waste of time.

that's true...the cant tell if you're saying hello the base or asking for more stuff to do.

Me? Personally, I try to complete the current mission and if completed, I "free lance" the rest.

Call it "Captains perogative".

I hate it when you report a contact and are told to 'break contact'. Are they kidding? I'm close enough to spit on the enemy and HQ want's me to break & run! Best to keep contacts to yourself if you have the ability to make a good attack. Even worse is to report a contact when you are out of fish and HQ orders an attack. Obviously, the AI does not take sub status into account.

Yeah, exactly Tony. This is my point. I had either enough fuel to achieve the objective or to return for more fuel. I didn't have enough to patrol AND then return for fuel. Unless they were sending a sub tender?
As you say, they didn't take my own status into account.
