I was on my way back to my home port after completeing my missions and ran across a large Jap Battle Group. It comsisted of 8 DD's, 3 BB's ( 1 Yamato, and 2 Kongo Class ), 1 Ecort Carrier amd 4 Heavy Crusiers.
At this time I had only 3 torps left, ( 1 Aft and 2 Fore ). I decided to go ahead and do a hit and run on the Yamato if I could get closed enougn to her without being detected. I finally got in front of this Task Force and waited for them to come to me. I was very apprehensive because the DD's for some reason where pinging away and at first I thought they had detected me. But they where either confused or looking for something else. Either way, the TF never started zig zagging.
I had the Yamato 45 degrees from my bow at 5000 yards. Got my bearings and was shooting for the spot between the forward #1 and #2 turrets and set to run at 15 feet. Fired off the torps very close togther. Was about 3 - 4 seconds apart with contact det selected.
Once they started getting close, I used my external camera to watch what happened.
:har: Well lets just say it was frightening. The 1st Torp hit just aft of the #2 turret and made a nice little hole. The 2nd torp went straight into the hole that the 1st one made. Watched it go in all the way to the middle inside the ship and explode. What happened next was the spooky thing. First notice was the "Shes Going Down" message, then a monstrous explosion happen across the entire ship all at the same time. There where no life boats either. Time from 1st hit till she slipped beneth the waves was less than 15 seconds. There was an escort carrier trailing the Yamato and it caught fire and sank about 2 hours later.:hmmm:
Is it possible in this game that the Yamato's explosion took out the carrier? I got no credit for it, but did for the BB.
Anyone ever seen the Yamato go down that fast and with no survivors?

Yes it is possible for one ships explosion to destroy another ship. Found this one out while playing with the mission editor and a merchant carrying ammo. As for the sinking of Yamato, you hit the thermal exhaust port. :haha: No seriously it sounds like you hit the forward magazine for the 18in shells or the powder.

I assume it's stock. It usually takes 8 or more torps to sin the Y. However ships exploding can take out other ships, but never seen a carrier get sunk. I did sink a Carrier once that did some wierd explosion and took out two dd's, one almost 700 yards away.

Not sure what I hit and it was likely a once in a lifetime lucky hit, but either way, to say I was slack jawed is a serious understatement.
Game is not stock. I am using RFB 1.52 and Real Environment Mod together.
Will give you another shot Yomoto, if you jump sub net.
We put 8 fish into her set to 15ft, quite the 4th July display, no survivors !

RFB1.52 doesn't have the crazy sinking mechanics for warships as it does for merchants. While two torps into a Hog Island frieghter might mean 90+min sinking time, a single torp into a fleet carrier has bagged me a very quick sink.
I'm so spoiled by the merchant sinking mechanics that the crazy arcade sinkings of warships make me sad. In other words, I'm not surprised you sunk the Yamato with 1 in RFB. You could probably do it 9/10 hits.

Never played it....Hard to imagine all that work to have mechanics like that. TMO...almost always takes 10-12. Once I got one with 8 harbor raping, so easy aiming. Was gonna give it a try...think I'll pass.
Still I have sunk some carriers with just 2 in TMO, although the Jolly Green Giant takes many. I had it sunk to the bridge, but it wouldn't go and I couldn't get close. It made explosions for 10 hours game time. Finally it blew and it was twice as large explosion as the Y and that was the one that sunk two nearby DD's.

It was two torp's back to back and less than 4 seconds from each other. First opened the hole in the hull just behind #2 turret, the 2nd went into that hole at a 45 degree angle and traveled into the hull and exploded under the tower just aft of #3 turret.
BTW a magazine hit can wipe out a Cruiser or BB or any warship for that matter, just look at what happened to the HMS Hood. So to those who think its bad mod mechanics or bad game design need to rethink there way of thinking. I have played these SH games since they came out oh so long ago and this is the 1st I have seen one go up like that. But it is possible in RL, history has proven that.

Could be the way they do damage zones. For the most part you hit a damage zone once, a shot to the same spot has little effect. With TMO you have to spread shots to different area's of the ship. It may be with RFB more damage in one spot. However, searching it doe's seem the damage zones for warships are easier than the merchants in RFB.
If you can get damage with shooting at the same spot, imagine the fun you could have harbor raping where you could aim.
I believe you have the record for the Y regardless of stock or mods.

I'm still suspicious if it's even possible to hit a warship with a single torpedo and have it not sink. My kill on the fleet carrier was 1 hit out of 6 tubes which I didn't actually see hit but it gave the "She's Going Down" message within seconds, something that is just impossible with the tiniest freighter and 4 simultaneous torpedoes.

The 2nd torp went into the 1st ones hole in the hull, but did not blow up in that area. It went deeper inside at a 45 degree angle and went off right under the tower just over the keel and just aft of turret #3. While I paused and looked around, I saw small damage holes on the belly of the ship where it went off. Think it was two different damage zones, even though it passed through the 1st ones hole.
Regardless, it was shocking to see it sink so dang fast and no life boats, and the escort carrier behind it was damaged enough from the Yamoto's explosion ( powder magazine? ) that it went dead in the water and sank 2 hours later. Burning the entire 2 hours and then rocked by explosions and sank. Got no credit for the carrier though, just the Yamoto kill.:hmmm:
I still find it odd, the behavior of the Jap DD's. They were pinging away at something before I took my shot, but made no effert to come at me ( they were circling something else it seemed as I scanned with my scope ). After the Y hit though, they were on me like white on rice and were very difficult to escape from. The battle group also made no effert to zigzag while the DD's were pinging away until after the hits. Any ideas what the heck that was about?

I've never played RFB..well, one patrol, so just don't know much about it.
I've played with a little modding, but not much to answer for sure. TMO is totally differnt and requires a more of a spread. I have sunk Kongo's with two before.
DD's are basically always pinging. You only hear them when they have you in their sonar cone, but may not have a good contact. After you shot they come to the area where torps came from. In TMO, the sensors are more powerful and more than often ruin the attack. RFB is harder with things like tracking.
Things are strange. The time I had a fit with that carrier where it just sunk to the bow I kept hearing one explosion after the other. I couldn't see them until I put the cam inside. They went on forever until it finally blew.
Maybe post in the RFB mod section and someone may explain how damage is done.
I had the Y almost sunk and had several dd's on me. I went under the Y at 600 ft. I got about 200 yards past it when it blew and even that deep and it on the surface it killed me.
Usually they do zig, so that's strange also.
Just take SS's so we can enjoy the kill.

You think thats Amazing? i once enterd a jap task for w/ 1 yamato and 2 Kongo. I was entering when i heard metallic scraping and i saw the yamato and a kongo had collided (:har:). i Saw my opportunity and fired 4 torps for starters. the ships were going 5 knots originally then they Frantically sped up. i, however had only One torpedo on Fast. 3 /4 torpedoes missed, but one hit her Right in between # 1 and 2 and i thought C**p the Dd and the entire Task force will be on alert, and i just emptied my torpedo tubes.... but the yamato had a tiny fire on the devk where the torpedo hit, then it literally out of nowhere RAISED UP OUT OF THE WATER AND MADE A MASSIVE EXPLOSION!:har::har::har: it split off her bow and she was Dead no question. i was like WTF and the kongo had 2 tiny fires on her. and i again thought YES i damaged the kongo too. And then the kongo out of Nowhere Had a Massive blaze and it said Enemy unit destroyed :o. and she blew up as half of her stern was in the water. i thought that was the coolest thing ever, but there was MORE. i immediately dived deep and 15 seconds later i see the words torpedo impact and i was like WTF. i use external camera and i see a light cruiser Ablaze and heavily listing to port. i couldnt believe my eyes. 28 seconds later she capsizes and blows up. i was so amazed i didnt notice the destroyer that was traling me until it was 200 M away. i ordered hard to starboard but she already dropped the DC's. 3 impacted practically right on meand i had 99 Hull Dmg and Critical flooding w/ all bulkheads smashed. 5 seconds later the hull Dmg increases to 100 and i die there and then:wah::wah::wah::wah::wah::wah::wah::wah::wah:: wah:and thats the story of the Best TOrpedo attack ive ever had ever but then Died and lost All that.:damn::damn::damn::damn::damn::damn:
