In the game, when ships are reporting distress signals, the radio message shows SSS instead of SOS. So what does SSS stand for?

Thanks

SSS means attacked by submarine

as the allies didnt use grid squares the location of the attack is given in Lat Long format.

this particular distress message comes from a ship called the S.S. Rio Claro, given the lat long coordinates she is likley to be sinking at a location about 400 miles west of Brest, France just outside the waters of the Bay of Biscay

Don't have it at my fingertips, but a web search for 'sea state' should get you a correlation to wind and waves.

I was successful on finding a sea state chart. Thanks redbear for what to use as a search!!!

I just came across the following and thought others would be interested.

During the Second World War, additional codes were employed to include immediate details about attacks by enemy vessels, especially in the Battle of the Atlantic.

The signal SSS signaled attacked by submarines, while RRR warned of an attack by a surface raider, QQQ warned of an unknown raider (usually an auxiliary cruiser), and AAA indicated an attack by aircraft.

They were usually sent in conjunction with the SOS distress code.

older version of sos.
Actuall SOS is the oldest, first being used in Germany in 1905. The others were created for specific usage in WW2, SSS=attacked by submarine, RRR=attacked by surface raider, AAA=attacked by aircraft, QQQ=attacked by unknown surface ship.

In the U-31 example, W=wind speed in metres and S=sea state...and yes, it's Beaufort.

also SOS doesn't stand for "Save our souls" thats completely made up. SOS is used because in morse code its so damn recognisable.

I was just about to say that SOS doesn't actually mean anything and that save our souls is a myth but you beat me to it!

Also sometimes assumed to mean "Stop Other Signals". But those all came later, as aids to helping novices remember the letter combination.
