View Full Version : Malfunctions?

Have we any indication yet on whether malfunctions and/or sabotage will be an included option?
The one thing I never liked about the compromised approach within SH3Cmdr was that whilst I could simulate a malfunction, SH3 wouldn't (for obvious reasons) see it as a malfunction and thus wouldn't attempt to repair it while at sea, meaning the player was stuck with malfunctions that in real life an industrious chief would have overcome (I work with an ex RAN CPO and some of the stories he's told me about at-sea repairs are amazing examples of ingenuity).

Even the much-despised SH2 had ocassional engine breakdowns, and warnings from the LI about running too long at flank speed.
I agree that realistic breakdowns would be a welcome addition, especially if they were accompanied by truly realistic repair times.
And the ability to watch the crew make the repairs. Woohoo.

Sounds great to me - always loved the malfuntions/sabatoge that were part of SHCommander!
So does that mean SH5 is shipping with a roll of duct tape, some super-glue, bailing wire and gum? :D
btw - JScones... are the sabatoge/malfunctions working with GWX3 yet? Just wondering cause thats the only reason I'm still playing GWX2.1... Love the uncertainty of something being broke! :arrgh!:

The GWX team released updated cfg files for SH3Cmdr back in February... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147567

Imho, malfunctions are a basic requirement. They added a lot of realism to SH2

Yes. While playing sh-3 sh-4 and sh-4 Operation monsun with and without sh3 commander i always made test-dives to immerse myself. But after a while it becomes boring because i couldnt help asking myself why make testdives and such while there isnt a reason to do so? I really hope random malfunctions will make it in the sim because i mean comeon! It would make things much more exiting and realistic..
How about gas contaminiation from Damaged batteries - that could force you to surface?

So does that mean SH5 is shipping with a roll of duct tape, some super-glue, bailing wire and gum? :D ...plus a couple of spare pistons, a crapload of piston rings, sheet metal, rivets, timber, castor oil, grease, spanners, bolts, nuts and a cupboard full of coveralls!!!
Bring it the f**k on is what I say
PS. And realistic repair times too, please.

I keep it on the front porch and use it to put my workboots on top LOL . My brother worked for an engineering firm and the boss had a complete uboat engine that he wanted to donate to a museum . No idea where he got it . No one wanted it so he said he would scrap it for the metal and the workers could take any parts they wanted . My brother gave me a piston and a few engine dials .

If I ever get my mod working, it could do this by writing to the saved game files at least for the crew injuries, illnesses and deaths; I suspect that it could do this for malfunctions also, but I haven't looked into this

Agreed. I think AOD had the warning "Sir, we have chlorine gas leaking! We must surface!"

I'd certainly welcome this as a realism toggle.

ahh hey guys im bit of a submarine buff but this may seem but of a dumb question : where exactly would you find a big peice of wood on a ww2 sub when its during a out at sea on a voyage during a major repair
eg:like on das boot
aint 90 % of the boat made of steel and 10% wood but realy secured wall panalling
floorboards, or outer dekboards.
On the engine failures. I don't want to get engine breakdowns every trip. so the balance on breakdowns need to be good.

And didn't U-Boats have timber onboard for repairs as well? 2x4s and stuff like that...
Good to have the risk for TDС to be damaged (or destroyed), forcing you to arrange torpedo attack totally by manual calculations until it is repaired (or till the end of patrol) :D
Also IMHO the Damage model could be improved by introducing the time, nesessary for determining the reason of the breakdown, not only for eliminating the one. Because in many cases, especially for rather complex equipment, such as sonar, radar e.t.c., time for searching the reason of the breakdown exceeds greatly the time for repairs.
Time necessary for determining the breakdown reason could depend upon the crew experience or be random.

If we are going to have engine failures... then we better be able to get assistance from nearby German ships (parts, tow, etc.).

i would guess they would only be minor failures that take time to repair by your crew but will only slow you down or stop engines to repair.
i cant see them giving us the ability to call for assistance to get repaired or towed but i would love it if they did find a way to do that.

True. If the failures were just small in nature and meant to slow or delay - then ok - but catastrophic engine failure would require some process or methodology for assistance... they wouldn't just leave us to die.... OR... maybe in SH5 we will have engines with individual controls?!!? WoO-HOo! Boats with realistic controls... Ooooooo... how suh-weet would that be? Ahhhhh... yummy multiple throttle goodness... Mmmmmm.... must stop drooling on keyboard... hmmmm... sigh. Ok... I'm better now.
PS - How about a volume knob for the freakin' radio too? :damn:

I found that company logo at this website: http://www.motoren-respondek.de/index.php
It seems that they are a supplier for spare parts nowadays. Maybe marine parts is an own division.
