View Full Version : Where are the battleships?

I am wondering, where are the battleships in GWX 3? Are they all sailing somewhere or are they docked in ports? I have been looking for battleships and other big ships from most ports of Britain, but I couldn't find any.
So, I am asking, are the BB's always sailing around the globe? And if they are, are they sailing historically accurate courses? Like if you go to Denmark Strait at 24th of May 1941, can you see the Hood and Bismarck fighting?
Or are the battleships laying in ports? And if they are,
Where, and when they are?
Example: I can find HMS Hood from Scapa Flow between 13th of August 1939 to 19th of November 1940 or USS Iowa from New York from 30th of January 1942 to 2nd of May 1944?
Thank you!

I think famous battles like hood vs bismark and the hunt for bismark afterwards are simulated in game, not every vessel movement or appearance is scripted, a large proportion of them are based on random chance, if you look in the campaign files with the mission editor you can see for yourself.

So I can find Bismarck and Hood from their historical courses, but are there any BBs in ports?
I remember sinking one docked just N/E of Gibralter. Actually there was a TF there and I bagged four capital ships. This was in 1940 mind you.
Gibraltar always has at least 4 Southampton and 1 BB.
I just found a big convoy of at least 6 BB surround by Fiji Class near Alexandria in the Med, date was 1943

Early in the war patrol west of Scapa Flow or better still, look in the Campaign_Scr file with Mission Editor.

I found 1 BB, 1 Carrier, 3 Cruisers, and alot of other ships from Giblartar.
I sank Nelson Battleship, all cruisers, 3 big tankers, 2 destroyers and Bogue escort carrier. Over 100000 tons. But only about 2500 renown.
So I can see where the BBs are from mission editor. How?

The beauty about this game is that you just never know what you will come across.
Like in RL, most of your targets will be small to medium merchants. BB and CR will come along almost never.
Like the real u-boat commanders...most never EVER seen a BB or a CR.
PLAY IT REAL OR DON"T PLAY AT ALL!

I can understand wanting to sink a BB. It's kind of like sneaking into Scapa, or sailing all of the boats, seeing an ice berg, or going to Dunkirk and D-Day. These things are all in the game and it's fun to experience them at least once. :DL

Open the Mission Editor in your SH3 game folder then mount the Campaign_Scr file in the Campaign folder.
But then why take the fun of exploration and discovery and surprise out of the GW Xperience? Opening the editor then sailing to where you know they are is like sneaking a peek at your christmas presents while they are still under the tree. It takes all the fun and excitement of wondering what you will find.

I agree! No cheating should be allowed... I completely takes all the fun out it. Hell just last week I almost fell out of my chair when I came across a TF north of Morocco that had the HMS Illustrious and 2 BB's in it... been playing for 2 years and thats the fist time I've EVER even seen a carrier! :o It's much more fun to just put yourself in the right postion and hope for the best... when you go fishing you don't look up where all the monster fish are do you? :nope:
and no... I didn't get her... I couldn't get into a respectible firing postion... :damn:
Again, I've had sucess early in carrers patroling west of Scappa. If they are in the game they enter and exit Scappa through the wester entrance. Found them there many times.
On the invasion to Norway, go to Trondheim there's a BB expected to pass through there, you can easily sit in a bearing and wait for it to pass, but it's heavily escorted

I have seen a Revenge Class in the Grids of AM, which is declared as
U-93's patrol area..so..no stealing my ships :arrgh!:
If you really want to sink your teeth into a BB (hey, who doesn't?) you could always try a historical mission or build your own...
I played SH3 with GWX 2.1 about 8 months, and never meet a BB.I got many reports of task forces but never intercepted them,
they are fast,or the weather was bad,or had no torpedos...
With GWX 3 during my first patrol (september '39) I run into a task force near the east coast of Scotland
with HMS Hood and a Revenge Class BB without escorts.
You can guess what happened :D
So,it's just a matter of luck!

People say it pays of to patrol west of scapa flow... you may try it sometime.
I would reccomend , especially early in the war , waters between england and ireland. I myself on a first patrol of new career sank a BB in the fist month of the war there.Just found a convoy in the middle of the day.
Though watch out ive heard there are those nasty iron spiky seacretures in these waters, and they tend to go boom when you cross paths with them ;)

Some months ago, not long after I started playing SHIII, I was in the seas between northern ireland and rockall, making a course for home after a fruitless patrol. The weather was rougher than a badger's backside, I was cruising submerged when sonar started reporting contacts rather close. Without having to drastically alter my course I ran into (almost litterally) a small convoy with HMS Rodney and as I recall HMS Hood and Revenge. They only had a light escort who hadn't detected me because of the horrid weather, I emptied my tubes into Rodney and dove, she went down, I reloaded after finding I'd not been discovered and repeated for the other two.
Sometimes awful weather is a blessing!
Since then I've not managed to catch another big battleship or battlecruiser I think its just luck. Though I tend to concentrate on merchant traffic more, it seems more satisfying to make a hole in a convoy without the escorts being able to do a damn thing about it. That is when things go right!

:) Hmmm .
If you're in May 26-27 1941 ,
you all will find those two Battleships at Northeast of grid BE 53
with course up to BE 37 :salute:
I ' ve sink them 2-3 times
GOOD LUCK
Are these Rodney and King George V? I'm trying to end up in the right place and time to save the Bismarck. Unrealistic, yes, but just once I'd like to give it a go and see what happens. I know the fight with Hood starts on 5/24/41 with the rest of the events following after. Anyone have any grid coordinates that might be helpful? I've got about a month to get U-54 into position.

Would it not be roughly the same grid as it is in the Bismark single mission? Can't say I took much notice of the grid in the mission as I only loaded it to watch the fireworks after I installed Racerboys SH4 effects...
oooooh........aaaaahhhhhhh....:D

You can guess what happenedI was in Feb 1940 along the eastern edge of AM 32 when I saw the same thing, only there were escorts. I let two go at the Revenge Class and two at the Hood. I dove to a hundred meters, and on the way down I noticed the first two missed. I then heard an explosion and the three words every Kaleun loves to hear "She's going down". I went aft and looked in the log knowing I had hit the Hood, but found some idiot in a tribal class had sped up (the punk) and I had sank it instead. I had an escort on top trying to find me and had to go to 'all stop'. After they cleared the area, I surfaced but couldn't catch up to them so I broke off the chase. One of these days my luck will change and I'll get one.

Looks like my luck changed.:DL
29.2.40. 0004 Grid AM 53 Ship sunk! HMS Revenge (Revenge class), 31000 tons. Crew: 1189. Crew lost: 535
Dang that felt good. I couldn't wait to get back to Wilhelmshaven. I ended up with 72467 tons. My best ever. I keep this up and I can sit down at the same dinner table as some of you other Kaleuns.

YES! :arrgh!:
I try to take part in norwegian operations in every career, sometimes i manage to sink the BB which steams to Narvik, you know the one with 8 destroyers...
I once managed to be in the somewhat right place at the right time-ish for the Bismark episode, I came into contact with 2 BBs on their way back home, both damaged, both unescorted. (possibly unescorted BECAUSE they were damaged)
:arrgh!:
can't remember the coords but i thought it was great they were still having their damage from what must have been the bismark shootout, felt awfully 'epic'

I've run into an R class pulling convoy escort between Iceland and the Faeroe's in early 1940 and hit the Nelson in Gib Harbour in 41 in my current career, (Currently late 43 cruising off the mississippi delta in awful weather) but as has been said you take what you find, like the large unescorted liner that I found in mid atlantic on my way over :)

I opened the Campaign_SCR file with mission editor. Its quite a mess. Does anyone know how I can see an exact day and time from it?
