View Full Version : How do you catch up with a convoy at high speed?

I mean sometimes when we spotted those convoy, i've encountered where i'm actually behind the convoy. So there's no way i can actually overrun them when submerge. So my concern is, after i figured out their patch line, i can barely catch up even in Flank because my speed is only 19 - 20kts.

Sometimes those task force convoy goes at 19kts or faster.

How do you deal with this scenario? I mean, its too big a piece of meat to give up even the moment you spotted them, you're already in a wrong position.

if you're behind them and they're over 20 knots you dont.

otherwise take a parallel course on surface out of visual range then when out ahead enough turn to intercept the projected path of the convoy and wait.

Normal procedure in this situation.

1.) Yell profanities (this may be augmented by kicking cat.)

2.) Explain to wife/gf that it is not stupid to get that upset over a game.

3.) Post rant thread about the one that got away on Subsim.

A lot of good opportunites disappeared into the distance during the war because sometimes your sub just ain't got enough butt to keep up or go around. You just have to let it go.

About the only thing you can do is call it in and hope another Captain can intercept her.

Oh DANG!!!! If only they can make sub move faster on surface. LOL

I mean... come on its like a mobile naked girl on a car and you only have a bicycle and the chicks keeps yelling "come on" "come on".

Geezzz. i hate this kind of feeling. Very sad...

But sometimes they zig-zag and let you catch up.

Convoys too.

You have a cat on your boat?

Certainly the cheapest option, plus it gives the rest of us an oportunity to

A) Laugh at you

B) Nod our heads wisely and say "Been there, done that"

C) Hand out useless, but cool-sounding, advice, like here and now.

:hmmm: Nooooo ... I think not catching up with the naked girl would be a lot worse.

Very true that it is frustrating, but that is the reality of it. I recommend reading "Silent Victory", and how this type of scenario among othere were frustrating to CO's. But to risk a high speed chase involves getting spotted. This is important because if you are patrolling a shipping lane, the gig is up and the easy fishing is over. It also uses excessive fuel consumption. Better to let them come to you...:salute:

If it's going less than your highest speed, say 18 knt's, close in enough to be seen so it will start zigging. If escorts come at you, turn and put your tail to them and usually they will turn back. Now that you have them zigging, you can attempt an end around.

If it's merchants, seldom gonna go that fast. Stay out of escort sight and try and slow one down with the deckgun. If they don't see you, escorts won't come. You slow down one, they all slow down. I don't recall many convoys going over 17knts. They can only go as fast as their fastest ship, so with some ID you can figure that out.

All else fails, look forward to the map. Almost always they headed to a port or battle. Hang back and try to keep them in Radar Range so they don't do the vanishing act. Many times they will make radical turns, often even coming back your way..TF do this often, convoys seldom. If you see them make a radical turn, you know your not gonna catch them, so keep going straight, they turn back, you'll be closer. If they have a base track, you can often get in position. I don't know how many times I've track TF and they finally turn and come back. Many are programmed to almost backtrack themselves.

this is easy!
if they're travelling away from you at 21kts just fire a few deck gun rounds till you have their attention, then when they're all turned toward you you've got plenty of targets for your torpedo's!

if they're merchant ships they'll zig zag, i like to fire a spread on high angle right into em and i'll hit 1 or 2 and send em under ;)

btw i'm not kidding i really do this, in RL i'd have never made it past my first patrol :rotfl:

The game work's as such you can fire all day, if they don't see you, they will go on as normal, so you have to get close enough for them to see you. The only thing that's gonna come back and chase you is DD's. Course mod's play a role, stock dd's you can battle it out and ships react different, TMO or RFB, your dead on the surface and ships act different, so I guess different roles for different mod's.
