I would wait at least till the begining of '10 to get a new vid card. New cards come out all the time, so the prices of like say a Nvidia 290 will probably drop $50-$75 between now and then.

This may sound selfish but I hope 3 285s can't start the game let alone run it.
I would bet money an 8800 would not do at all. (But I would also guess 2 285s would run it fine let alone 3)
But, it is a long time in video card life spans to worry what we will need.
I intend on letting some of you buy it ASAP report back and then after the first patch see what I need and build a new game PC just for this game.
I usually run a SH3 patrol on average 4-5 times a week so with all the years since 2005 i would say what ever I have to spend will be worth it to get max satisfaction There will be 2-3 new lines from Nvidea and ATI before we see SH5

ATi is due to release their newest HD5000 series 40nm GPU videocard in September of 2009 if all goes well. DX11 ready and sounds like it should kick ass without using too much power or excessive heat.
We shall see... if the early returns on their 4770 mid-level card is any indication of the capability of the 40nm designs- look out! 2 of them in Crossfire mode really hop for $109 each at newegg.com.
I currently have my trusty old Nvidia 8800GT with 512MB. I am waiting until this ATi 5000 series debuts before making any decisions on what to buy.

Specs wont be announced for some time yet.
Go ahead and speculate but i would assume the gentilman with three video cards running will be okay :rotfl:

Gimme a break. u-168's 8800GTX will burn thru SH5 like a steak on a BBQ. :haha:
SH5 is going to be RAM hungry.
Anyone who didn't upgrade their rig since SH4 was released doesn't get any sympaththy from me.

Yup, that sounds selfish. :hmmm:
What I'd like is highly scalable graphics:yeah:. Fine with me if maxing everything out cripples 3 285s. But, I'd like to think it would still be an enjoyable experience (on lower settings) for someone still running a card limited to DX9. Most people are still in that boat as far as I know - most people haven't made the jump to Vista and if their GFX card is adequate for their needs, they haven't sprung for a DX10 card. Now Windows 7 is about to reach the general public and DX11 is coming, too - that's when folks will upgrade (that and when the economy turns around). It also means I could play on a laptop, should I have reason to.
I've had my ATI 4870 since it was released and their haven't been any killer apps that have made me feel the need to upgrade, nor have their been any huge improvements in graphics cards. I expect my rig will run SH5 reasonably well (barring the usual bugs that are to be expected) upon release.

Might be why so many still visit the SH3 forums. :yep:

There isn't one shred of evidence YET that SH5 is DX10.
If you know something with a link, Post It.
But don't come out with missleading BS.

There is no evidence of any kind just our own speculation so everything is BS.
It would certainly be nice if it could be scaled so various budgets could run SH5.
What I do not care to see is it limited to lower end rigs so the option to build a super PC that with unreal graphics is not possible.
Of course I hope they test the thing enough so it is as bug free as possible.
Remember how many patches it took for SH3. 3 patches to make it OK and a fourth to finish the job. I would like to see SH5 released at where SH3 patch 1.3 was.

Dear sir,
I am truly and deeply sorry if I in any way implied or insinuated that I had insider knowledge that SH5 would be in DX10. I had no intention of misleading anyone on this forum. My intent was to discuss the possible graphics requirement of SH5 and to express my desire that it be scalable so that more people may enjoy it. I offered my opinion that many people have not upgraded to DX10 systems, but that in the near future, more people may do so.
Again, I DO NOT KNOW if SH5 will run in DX8, 9, 10, 11 or OpenGL, (or Flash or Shockwave for that matter). I beg your forgiveness if I have given an impression to the contrary.
SinisterD.

I'm always amazed how people will go nuts trying to figure out what something will be or not.
It's just a game, not something to argue and have heart attacks over...
It's months away.....relax and wait for real info from ubisoft.

I'd say that if you can run Silent Hunter 4: U-boat Mission with near max settings you won't have much problems with this game. More detail has clearly been put to the game, but I am fairly certain that one who could run Silent Hunter 4: U-boat Mission (which is a fantastic looking game) with near max settings can run the game just fine.

Looks like I'll have to upgrade to play a Silent Hunter sequel.
Again. :haha:
I originally upgraded to play sh4 it looks like i will have to do it again would be good if they told us so we could get our rigs ready for the game that way there is no scurrying around getting graphics cards. lol when i originally got sh4 and my pc did not play it i just out to the pc shop and got the 8800 gtx mabey i will get a nvidia 295 for it.

Yeah same here, but I dont mind paying for upgrades if the game is worth it. I'll wait to see a little more first before I splash out on new computermabobs.
will a 280 gtx 1gb run it?? if so i can get one for cheap.

If a 1GB graphics card wont run it, I'll personally go and punch one of them in the face. :yep:

Ya same i might run 2 280 GTX 1gbs with the old 8800gtx in the back.

High end 256 or a low end 512 Vid should run it..its going to be a Ram hog,so 3 Gig min or 4...IMO.

Guys, speculation is fine and f but have some common sense on hardware.
This stuff drops in price by the day sometimes. Whatever cost $300.00 in a VC today will likely be $125.00 or not even available when SH5 is loading up for the first time.
Never buy any hardware until the day you need it.
Now, if you hear Vinny or Tyrone whisper, Psssssssssst, yo, got your 295's here for $20.00 a piece but the new ATI 5 series are $30.00 how many you want?
Well, that changes the above advise:rotfl:
Seriously, save your money until you get the game and then upgrade, you will get more hardware and might here from others which card runs it better

I dont think this game will require so much resources.
i dont think it should use eneymore power than sh4 now i come to think about it sh4 is quite advanced and by the trailers of sh5 we may infact even be able to stick to the cards we have now and run it mabey:DL
U-168
The interior compartments and crew will take a lot of power to run :o

Idk, I'm in a pickle.
I got an ASUS AH3450 (other wise known as the HD3450)
AGP with 512 on the card, I hope it can at least run the game
like, when I tried to run Far Cry 2 on my hd2400, it wouldnt start up because my card was too inadequate

First off my apoligies to all. Lets think about this logicaly.
UBI isn't going to provide their DEV's with high-end Rigs.
Duo Core, Yes. PCI-E, You bet. 2GB Ram, At least.
But to use a Mega rig to make a sim for a niche group that alot have trouble playing SH4. Would be finacial suicide. :dead:
1 or 2 Devs have posted here and while not giveing anything away about SH4 iirc used middle of the road computers then.
If you at least upgrade to play SH4 reasonalbly well, You shouldn't have any trouble with SH5.

It's way too early yet. Much optimizing still to do. Tech Specs will be confirmed in December/January would be my guess.
I think you can apply common sense though and say that you'll need at least 2 GIGs of RAM, a mid range duo core processor, and a decent 512MB video card. :)

We have optimized SH5 to use less memory than SH4.
^^
There you go - from the horses mouth and everything:
Its really great to see the guys (Devs) posting here, :yep:
That said i do hope that the optimization doesnt come at the expense of reducing the engines draw distance for Ships & Land mass:D

This is exactly what I was expecting to hear...just wanted to hear it from one of the devs.
Thus I am not concerned in any way about system specs, even with my 2 year old computer (although by the time SH5 is out, I would have naturally upgraded it anyway). Using SH3 or SH4 as benchmarks for SH5 system performance is fraught with danger.
I was always taught never to worry or stress about things that may not happen. It's not healthy. So I find all the speculation and concern in this thread highly perplexing. Just hang tight, save your money and see what you need when it's formally announced. Who knows, you may find that the money that you saved in the meantime can be spent on other things. ;)
Usually sims are played by a large group of people with no interest in buying a new graphics card etc. every 3 months..that way they can sell more copies because the sim market is so small..
I have faith that SH5 can run on my pc with a 8800GTS 640MB card...you may think i'm crazy but its the 640MB that has kept me going nuts about this card for 2 years now,its the best i ever had with the longest life-span.
Sh4 runs on highest settings, with AA on 4x and i have 60+fps,60 only in bridge view, the other views exceed 100 fps..
I'm gonna stick with my 8800 and see what it can do,i'm confident..
