Too early to judge. We've only seen like no more than 5-6 actual in-game pics from an unfinished build. Wait until we have 100 in-game screenshots, and then you'll all be able to complain how not state-of-the-art the shadows are.
Quoted for truth.
I guess the lack of real information has sent everyone scrutinizing over the minutiae of what we do have and unfairly judging the finished product by it.
This is what people are doing with SH5:

I looked some opinion that the graphic of water in SH5 is bad...
But please remember, that graphic in this game -not important- and is maybe... only THIRD issue...
The FIRST point, more important than "graphic" is: PLAYABLITY for single and multimode users.
The SECOND is: BUGS FREE

LOL, I knew it had to have some kind of meaningful function. :haha:
I want recommended specs for this game as soon as possible. My PC is pretty high end, And runs SH3 and SH4 very smoothly with the graphics maxed out. Quick loading times, Etc.
However this new installment looks like it will be a real resource hog, And I want the full experience. It's nice knowing in advance so I can plan and work towards upgrades if I need one. Or even if I have to build a new PC altogether. (Yes I'm pretty pathetic, I built a top of the line PC for Silent Hunter 3 and 4 pretty much, There were other perks to go with it, but it was my main motivation. I'm hopless.)

...and as a already usual feature for the Silent Hunter series is the total lack of Dynamic Shadows
That´s not entirely true. At least our future crewmates will cast their dynamic shadows on the subs floor and equipment. Just take a closer look at the few in-game screenshots.
On this shot the conning tower, the deck gun and even the ship at the peer in the middle have shadows:

So it looks good to have them really in-game. :ping:

Is it just me, or does the wave-patern seem special? The water in the harbour is completely calm, but there are more pronounced waves around the sub, particularly along the hull.
Maybe the surface is now more dynamic, and the boat interacts with it?

omg fluid simulation!!!???
Maybe they made them a bit higher than in SH4, It would be nice if they would interract with sea waves... But it would be the first step to make sealevel more realistic, so I `d be happy even for that.

Very nice trailer. Even though I prefer the Pacific theater and U.S. Fleetboats against IJN, I will definitely buy this when it comes out. Looks like they are adding more capability to the SH franchise.
I just hope that someday they put this kind of emphasis back into the PTO.

I am unable to login in to UBI because I've forgotten my password. :oops:All I want is to see the most recent SH5 development progress.
I select the "forgot password" which sends me in a perpetual loop from hell to reset my password via an email link. When I enter a new password and hit enter I keep getting an error message. :shifty:

I hope it is not like SH4 but has a better way to control the men and U-boat as SH3. The graphics look great, hopefully we will only need one or two patches..wonder if GWX needs to save the 4.0 for SH5!

I would like to see - some sunny daylight screens, hopefully windy... with a rough sea.
These dusk screens are sort of... development progress cheating.
But anyway... it's better to continue polishing sea surface and reflection... than to "declare it finished", with aim to reach declared realease date.
:know:
Thanks for informing me the good news.

One of the things I've asked for, both here and directly of Dan, was the difference between sea state in the open ocean and in harbors. After all, they don't call them safe havens for nothing. Should be calm, or at least much calmer than outside.

Did he give you a straight answer? :06:
There just being a general sea-state no matter where you were bugged me a bit too, but I think it's pretty complex to separate a harbour from open sea. You could fairly easily define a harbour "zone" where the sea is always calm, but how would you make the transition between open sea and harbour zones smooth? :hmmm:
I hope pitching and rolling of the boat is a result of actual dynamics now as well, instead of a result from a few numbers in a .cfg file, but that would mean modeling of hydro-dynamics is necessary, at least in some basic form. Would get rid of that sub-on-rails effect; was a little ridiculous to see 3/4 of the boat out of the water at times in rough seas. :rotfl:

Hi mates been busy! Thanks for the update Neal.
Theres a helmsman driving the boat yay...
...and few crew hanging in the control room looks promising...yet so did sh3 in raw form...
Hope the realism and historical perspective are up to GWX standards!?
I would surely miss OLC's uber gui and joe grundmans targeting feature of sh3. For me these mods and many other mods bought sh3 upto what it should have been out of the box!
Wolfpacks -packs that function at least as good as AOD or as JScones eluded a post or two ago! When was AOD 1991-2? Too complicated for todays stuff?
At worst SHV would give some modders a challenge, to bring it up to a GWX - SHCommander standard...
yay theres a helmsman driving the boat! :yeah:

I've just logged in after a long time away from SH3 and SH4. Judging from the trailer it looks as though there may be a great deal of interactivity between the player (you) and the crew - text based ????.
It looks wonderful, but perhaps a little "dark" - the shot of you (the captain) moodily considering his/your iron cross speaks volumes. Perhaps we can look forward to a playable "Das Boot."
Of course, it's purely "wait and see." but imho, from what we can see from the trailer, Silent Hunter V will not be a totally direct development of SHIV ( as SH1V was of SH3, to the point that many identical files were used and the developers didn't even bother to rename them). We've yet to find out whether SHV will be based on current engines and structures - and that will ultimately decide on the "modability" of the game.
Personally, I'm looking forward to SHV. I've recently spent some time involved with Fallout 3 and can only say that I'm still somewhat blown away by the lengths to which the game seeks to create a free-form environment ( while still, of course, being essentially linear ) and the graphics are to die for - provided you have a totally high-end set-up.
If the engine space and torpedo rooms are just eye-candy in SHV it will be a great shame, but, as I've said, we can only wait and see.
No matter what, doubtless the Grey Wolves will take Ubisoft's latest offering and, in time, improve it - in which case, we could be looking at the game of the century.
Thanks Ubisoft :yeah:
And thanks in advance for the whole moding community that will surely do its best again, when the time comes

Well hopefully SHV wont need much modding :haha:
Seriously, I was talking Kpt Lehmann earlier and its true what he says, the more you look at the SHV screenshots the more you can notice some really nice looking things - graphically speaking.
Dynamic shaddows appear to be inplace (at least on the U-boats them selves)
The Draw distance looks fantastic. I can see tree covered landscapes looming on the horizon
The partical effects for ocean and bow spray.... are breathtakingly beautiful :o
I think even the harshest crtics will cave in when they see it properly (in action.)

but we can only hope not... but sadly I cant see it happening...

I just hope that people don't get too focused on "only GWX can fix this!" that they lose sight of other existing and new modders that will no doubt appear, with SH5 being a whole new game and all (unlike SH4) where every modder is on the same learning curve. ;)
I would hate to see potential modding gurus (remember, even the GWX team started as novices) get disheartened because "only GWX matters", which I see has already started.
I think Lehmann's announcement today opens the door to new, fresh, and exciting ideas and opportunities for both new modders and those modders who have for years "lived in the shadows". Remember what non-GWX modders achieved in SH4 (both PTO and ATO). Foster it.
Just remember: a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. ;)

hey relax :) No one says that other people who are modding by their own are forgotten. It's just that the larger group of modders can do one job (project) faster spreading themselves into work segments and can achieve results in shorter period of time than a one human being on his own working on seperate things. Knowledge, modding skills and completion of objectives reunites them as a team and I think it is the most important thing for achieving best results.
Experience of these people who worked hard all these years with GWX projects is at high level. So in my opinion loosing these talents would start everything from a null again with new maybe less experienced modders.

:hmmm: Did you actually read my post? I never said teams were bad. My comment is for those who think that *only* the GWX team can solve all their problems. A deserved compliment for the GWX team yes, but a potential backhander to anyone else, even those that may wish to form a team of their own (shock horror). And given Lehmann's own words in his thread today, you may be holding out for a very long time for GWX5, maybe even longer than GWX4...
In other words, players should keep an open mind and foster the talent that does emerge, rather than pine for something that may not (dare I say won't) eventuate. Look forward, not backwards.

Will the file structure remain the same or similar to SH3/SH4? Or will the entire directory and file structure be new and the file dependencies, interactions, and variables need to be relearned?

Wolfpacks are definitely needed. I'm not hopeful we'll get them, because it's just such a departure from all the previous games. But they were a huge part of submarine operations. I will probably still buy the game anyway. But wolfpacks are what would make it better than SH3. First-person view will not make it better than SH3, in fact I think that effort is mostly wasted, unless it is very easy for the devs to do, because you will want to spend all your time looking at the same handful of locations anyway. I can't say I've ever had much urge to go anywhere I can't already go in SH3. SH3's graphics are adequate as well. I'd also want: * Better crew management. Seems like in every SH game, this comes out almost-but-not-quite right. * Round Earth * More living map in general. I can't say I have any particular desire to play AS a milch cow (sit in the middle of the ocean... followed by... more sitting in the middle of the ocean), but being able to visit one for supplies would be a treat. Enemy forces that remember when major ships are sunk and don't spawn them any more. Real intel on real enemy convoys. Patrolling aircraft from real carriers. Real friendly submarines. It all fits together with the wolfpacks into a more dynamic world. And it's multi-core friendly (those extra cores can go on simulating the world while one or two are busy rendering your local battle). Campaign-wise, it would be a whole different game. Of course, it doesn't really show off much in a screen shot. Computer performance is there now. Will the devs have the time and the ambition?

Is there any specs out to Silent hunter5 yet?

Ehr, yes?
System requirements:
My projected configuration to run the game very well (with all graphic options enabled, in 1280*1024) is:
dual core at 3 GHz (quad core is appreciated but not mandatory)
2 gb of ram
nVidia 8800 GT 512mb (ATi 4850 512mb)
512mb on the video card is a minimum to play the game with every option checked. We're trying to make the game to fit into 256 mb of video memory (with the lowest settings).

What's so funny about a 8800GT?
Oh, and ehr, welcome aboard. :salute:
i think that we dont have any chance to play smooth on 8800GT. cuz i have that card, play on it at SH3 + GWX3 with 4GB ram and C2D ~3.6GHz. fps drop down and game run slow when ships blow up etc.
but wait. system requirements are always lower than they say. u install game, run it and ... buy new hardware.
i prefer buy SHV :arrgh!:

Considering one of the developers posted that right here on Subsim, I think it's a pretty good estimate. I play SH4 on a GTS 512, 1 step above a GT (forgetting about the older GTS  ). Yeah, there's a stutter sometimes, but that doesn't make the game "choppy" overall. Probably has more to do with accessing the HD or the engine itself than the card anyway. :hmmm:
60-90+FPS on average is a good measure as well imho, and comparing a fully modded game to a stock release is just silly.
You're too quick to judge. No soup for you! :arrgh!:

if your having fps issues with sh3 on your setup as listed then it is not a game related or video card related problem so its either mod soup slowing you down or something else goiung on.
i ran sh3 with GWX and i was just using a p4 single core and a gs7600 256mb card and i only had fps issues with the event cam or when the entire convoy was in flames blowing up and sinking all around me.
it might be easy and convienient to just blame it on the card but i dont think your card is the culprit slowing you down unless its not working properly.
(are you sure all your video card ram is working?)

I have the same specs as you almost - only CPU is different (E8500) and i do not have this problem you speak of.
maybe check your drivers card settings in the NV control panel?

I am not surprised they are doing sh5 after reading the ubisoft
reports full year 2008-09 sales . It says that q4 2008/09 sales of xbox 360 were 15 % OF TOTAL SALES AND PLAYSTATION 3 AT 15 % FOLLOWED BY PC GAMES AT A CLOSE 13 % .

Can Neal explain to me why Amazon cannot ship a DVD-ROM to me in Australia, yet they can ship a book????? I tried pre-ordering SH V and was advised they could not ship it to my address. Maybe I will have to pre-order it from UbiSoft meaning SubSim misses out on the order.
Cheers

Maybe it has something to do with area coding or something like that.
Amazon don't/won't and never have shipped computer games or electronics to Australia, and I'm pretty no other major US retailer will, I assume it is to do with distribution lisencing from the publishers etc. (Why you'll see 'not for sale outside of country/region X on all games)
Back in 2007 there was similar issues with Steam not selling to Aussies new release AAA titles like Crysis because of the exchange rates at the time.
It would be nice to be able to save almost 50% at the moment on the price of the game also with the current exchange rates... :)

good.
Reading the new interview I AM very worried now. There's no 1944 and no 1945, and I smell a lot of scripting.
I was just kidding earlier with my back of the box description, but it looks like I was dead on :o :stare:

Personally, I'm hoping the entire Awards aspect to include the Uniforms are a whole lot better. I'm getting tired of just the same type of Medals. I would like to see Campaign Ribbons, performance Ribbons and Service Ribbons, not just the same basic 5 Valor Medals a to see them worn on a Uniform (even if it's just on a hanger in a closet).
That whole U.S. Navy attempt was so bad, I thought they invented a new Navel Service Branch from some fantasy country.
Visually, this screen shots look stunning.

Hi Starlet, it was really not a good idea to necro this thread, the reality of the game has drastically changed in these 10 years, maybe go through the sticky posts, or open a separate thread with questions if you want to be taken seriously.
2 basic infos for you:
Ubisoft doesn't any longer support this game, neither Ubisoft offers his online server for it. You must play the game through U-Play.
Then, the stock game updated to 1.2.0 alone is not a functional game, it needs heavy modding. As a shortcut to this, read about the 'The Wolfes of Steel' mod for the game, this is the only acceptable way to play for newcommers.
Good luck
