It started with an urgent plea for help late Saturday night as he walked to his car after a State Fair outing with his family.
And it ended with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett lying in a pool of blood with a broken hand after he rushed to confront a pipe-wielding suspect officials described as a "vicious thug."All I can say is, I'm super proud of this guy and wish him a speedy recovery!
As an aside, I have to say that, he's a Democrat but one of the most practice-what-you-preach fellows I can remember in politics. While I don't always agree with his policies, I was incredibly happy when he fought to overturn the ultra-liberal mandatory sick pay referrendum passed here last year.
Also, I find nothing more telling about this guy's character is that, this attack occurred after he left the WI State Fair with his family, and he did not have ANY security detail with him, although he's entitled to one at his option. But, he generally does not travel with them on his personal time because the money comes from taxpayers. Frankly, I think he should (visible public officials need protection) and probably will for now on, but it was a nice gesture.
Here's to a speedy recovery, Mr. Mayor!

Wow my GF is in West Allis and even went to the fair with her family 2 days ago. She will be home in AZ tonight!
At least he wasn't shot with a pipe (http://blog.modernmechanix.com/mags/PopularScience/2-1933/pipe_shooter.jpg).

You mean impaled? :hmmm:
No, shot.
You feel better that he had his brains bashed in?

Dunno about you, but I would rather be beaten with a pipe and recover than
be shot with a pipe and die.

I should imagine the thug is being taught the error of his ways whilst in custody......take extreme care in the shower!!

But would you rather be beaten by a gun and die or shot with a pipe and die?

If I would die either way, then let me be shot with the pipe.
Very few pipes are able to shoot bullets of any caliber. I think I would enjoy
the fleeting novelty of being shot by a pipe much more than the more
mundane and, presumably more lengthy and painful, process of being beaten
to death with a gun.

Wow my GF is in West Allis and even went to the fair with her family 2 days ago. She will be home in AZ tonight!I grew up in West Allis. And it's no lie ... there are 2 faces to the city. There's West Allis, and then there's what people call Dirty Stallis. :arrgh!:
Bah a real mayor would of took his own pipe and sword fought the guy, but then again this is Wisconsin, we are known for our dairy products not our sword fighting Mayors. :rotfl:

Wouldn't it be an interesting twist if it were a corncob pipe?

I propose that we mandate a 10 day waiting period before you are allowed to buy pipes.

All owners of pipes should be made to smoke them.

Well one thing is for sure, unless he screws up somehow he'll be Milwaukee's Mayor for life. He might even get a statue someday.

Oddly enough, this past weekend WI Gov. Doyle (probably one of the most corrupt state-heads in the nation) announced he won't be running for re-election. In 2002 Doyle BARELY beat Barrett in the Democrat primary. How that plays out will be interesting.

Personally, I vow to bust my ass to get him out of office unless he stops acting like an idiot with the Bucks.

I was never a huge fan of Barrett, but I have to tip my hat to him for this. He did the right thing and paid a serious price for it, although it looks like he'll be fine.
As for Doyle leaving, good riddance. It'll be interesting to see who replaces him. None of the current declared candidates are real stars, although if Tommy Thompson throws his hat into the ring it's all over.

In any case, the attacker's mother blames Barrett for getting involved. Can you believe it?
