Is there a way to calculate whether or not you will have enough fuel to make it back to port? Thanks! Joe S

I just use the navigation map to find out the distance, and then use the "range at current speed" button at the bottom.

I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I didnt think we had a range at current speed option in SHIV.Where do I find it? I am running version 1.4, I think.Thanks! joe S

As the Lt. said its a button on the bottom of the nav map.

Beware though he is notoriously inaccurate.

Joe, I'm running ver. 1.5, and now TMO 1.7 as well.

I've been running TMO 1.7 since I started my first campaign/career, so I never checked range before I had TMO 1.7, as I had no need. And I've never had anything older than ver. 1.5.

I am?

If you're talking about my gunnery or my torpedo shooting, you are correct.

I don't think I've posted anything inaccurate on the boards though. If I have, please bring it to my attention.

I believe Steamwake was referring to The Nav in game. :salute:

I will try to post a screenshot of my navmap. I am unable to find a button for "range at current speed" Help! Thanks! Joe Shttp://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm218/jgs109/Silent%20Hunter%20IV/chart.jpg

You are correct, the button I use is not there in your screen shot. I'm not sure if mine is from ver. 1.5 or the TMO 1.7 mod.

Is there a simple way to get it back without installing a major mod? Thanks, Joe S

It's not there in 1.4. So short of editing some files, which it would be hard to say if it's anywhere in any 1.4 files, I think you are SOL.

I think ETR is correct, I don't think you can get it back, as I don't think it was there to begin with. It would probably be worth it to upgrade to 1.5, even if you don't want to run one of the mods. I don't think that would help you now though.

I see Silent Hunter Gold is available with the U-boat missions. I assume there is a way to load it in a different directory from what I have and one without interefering with the other? I also assume this would be the latest and greatest version, 1.5, am I correct? Thanks! Joe

Is there a simple way to get it [range at current speed] back without installing a major mod?

"Range at Current Speed" is an option available in two modes:
As a keyboard command.
As a button command.
Unfortunately, both options are disabled in the default version of SH4. Most of the super mods add it as a new button (along with an appropriate graphic for the new button) ... you can make a similar modification by enabling the command and duplicating one of the existing button graphics. Either that or find an unused keyboard key, bind it to the disabled command, and then enable the command.

:hmmm: Btw, IIRC the command you're looking for isn't called "Range at Current Speed" ... it has a different (and not quite as obvious) name. I forget what it is ... but a good forum search should get you the answer.

I believe the two icons are...

Maximum range at current speed.
Range to end course

So you get your range to end course, your last waypoint and using the max range at current speed, you can play with you speed settings to see how fast you can go and make it.

Another icon about time at current speed, but I can't remember the exact line.

Thanks Armistead and Munchausen!

For example, I could use the "R" key for Max range at current speed and "Shift R" for range to course end?

besides finding the correct config file and adding the "R" and Shift r" to the command, what exactly do I need to do? Keep in mind you are Not describing this to someone who know alot about modifying config files,(I mean someone who know NOTHING about it) Thanks! Joe S

:hmmm: Try this:

Make a copy of your default OrdersBar.cfg file and put it in a safe place.
Open the old OrdersBar.cfg file with Notepad.
Go to [Station2]
Find the last command for Station 2.
Add the following command to the bottom of the Station 2 list ...

ButtonnCommand=Report_time_to_turn
ButtonnIconRowColumn=7,3
ButtonnTooltip=RANGE AT CURRENT SPEED
... where n equals the last command number (for Station 2) plus one.

Save the file.
Run the game.
Cursor over the "new" icon ... it should say "Range at Current Speed."

:timeout: If it doesn't (or you don't have a new icon), replace your modded file with the original. And ask for more help.

That option is not in the STOCK version of the game. I just downloaded TMO and noticed it was there, so that's particularly a nice feature.

:03: Sure it is. It's just not enabled.
