I'm going to need a loan for this one, unfortunately this will surely drive gas prices up to the $5.00 mark or higher.

DETROIT, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The Chevrolet Volt -- the electric vehicle General Motors Co [GM.UL] is counting on to recharge its image with consumers -- is on track to hit an unprecedented fuel economy rating of 230 miles per gallon in city driving, the automaker said on Tuesday.
GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson said the Volt would get a "triple-digit" fuel economy rating for combined highway and city driving based on a draft standard developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
"The Volt is becoming very real, very fast," Henderson said in an announcement at GM's technical center that was webcast to the public.
The Volt, which will be introduced late next year, is designed to run for 40 miles from a single charge of a lithium-ion battery pack. After the battery is partly depleted, a small combustion engine is designed to kick in to recharge the battery and power the vehicle
At $5.00 per gal., thats 8,000 gallons of gas. :timeout:, or 160,000 miles at 20 miles per Gal. I will not live to drive that far:dead:

My 2.5 V6 mondeo (its a big car) most cars above 2.0litre 2000cc are large cars in the UK but i get 38MPG out of it if i drive it right 29MPG around town.
Most economical car ive had renault megane diesel 1.5litre 74MPG (diesel is around 4p a litre more than petrol)
The average car will do roughly 44MPG

WOW, and I thought we had high fuel prizes... 1.01 £/litre that's insane, we've got approx 1.1 €/litre here... seems the pound has dropped a lot, I thought 1.01 £ would be quite a bit more than 1.17€

It's not the price of gas, it's the taxes you put on your gas. You should do something about that :shucks:
Maybe the Toyota Prius would be a better choice because the cost would be a huge factor there.
Prius - $22000
Volt - $32500 ?
It looks like for short commutes using the batteries your mpg is good, but drops on long trips.
When gasoline is providing the power, the Volt might get as much as 50 mpg. But that mpg figure would not take into account that the car has already gone 40 miles with no gas at all.
So let's say the car is driven 50 miles in a day. For the first 40 miles, no gas is used and during the last 10 miles, 0.2 gallons are used. That's the equivalent of 250 miles per gallon. But, if the driver continues on to 80 miles, total fuel economy would drop to about 100 mpg. And if the driver goes 300 miles, the fuel economy would be just 62.5 mpg.

The Volt will need to be plugged in at night to recharge. The company said it estimates it will need 8 kilowatt hours for the recharge necessary to travel 40 miles. That should cost a total of about 40 cents at off-peak electricity rates in Detroit, Henderson said.National figures from the Department of Energy suggest most consumers would pay more than that, probably around 88 cents per recharge.

I am on the waiting list to test drive the volt. It sounds like interesting technology but I want to test drive it to see how it is made.
The only reservation I have is that it is a Chevy. Honestly I would feel more confident if it were a Toyota/Honda/VW.
But I will give it a fair trial when I get a chance.

The Chevy Volt is a gas electric hybrid if im not mistaken.
The Aptera is sexier IMO... and all electric model is available.

I really hope you get more miles per gallon. I get about 35 miles with my 17 year old Mazda.

or just tell the Commerce Department to get even ... Wham!
$10,000 import tax added on would solve the problem :hmmm:

And whats really sad is they expect no profit for awhile. Must be the way to pay back the dept.

I would love to get an Aptera. It looks very cool. I just don't think it could handle the winters here in Virginia. Too bad

I drive about 3 miles a day to work. I could, in theory, get ∞ miles to the gallon as the gasoline engine would never have to kick in. Sweet!
But what happens when your batteries need to be replaced? From what I've read, that's a pricey proposition.

As you well know the difference is taxes Kapitan so the way I see it if we didn't complain about gas prices then our government would take it as a sign they can fleece us to the same degree that your government does to you.

With 90% humidity in the mornings, I'd rather not bike or walk to work and be a sweaty mess all day.

It's going to be difficult for a person from Holland to understand just how hot and humid it gets where you live.

True. Houston's climate, according to wiki, is classified as "humid subtropical"

Houston's climate is **** I lived there for 2 years and never really got used to it.
We do complain about the price of petrol, thing is the government is never going to lower the tax on it.
