Was on patrol last night, and had just finished patrolling assigned patrol grid when I pick up sound multiple contacts which turned out to be a 10 ship convoy with mostly medium/modern tankers and just 1 escort - jackpot I thought! So I went on a attack run, got past the escort and launched torps at two tankers, one goes down immediately and the other is crippled.
I then dived as the escort ship (a flower corvette) headed towards me.
Then began almost 2 hours (real time) of trying to evade this escort, and despite all my best efforts was onto me like a blood hound! Fortunately I took only minor damage from the numerous depth charge runs, but was still unable to evade, what was I to do?
So I took a rather dangerous course of action, as this could only end one way - me being sunk. So I blew ballast and shot to the surface within 300 meters of the Flower, this obviously surprised the crew on board, and allowed me to get my deck gun ready and was able to sink it - phew!
Unfortunatley for me, the convoy was long gone, but was unable to sink the crippled tanker I hit earlier.
Now I know this is not in the manual, but I thought what the hell, and pulled it off - just.

in situations like yours its best to run silent at 1 knot to get away:yep:, for the fun of it you could reduce the reload time to 1 second firing and take on all the escorts i used to do that it was a good laugh:up:
max..........:arrgh!:

A Flower is possibly the only escort I would challenge on the surface....and only if I popped up at his rear.

Which I did, anything else - forget it. I was just surprised how easily I was tracked even though I was running silent. Then again it is late '42 in my career, so i should expect this from now on.

Congratulations, Herr Kaleun!
Surfacing to engage an escorts, and sink it, requires an incredible amount of courage and skill. My compliments to you and your crew.
Well done!
But please, don't do it again.

Message received and understood. But do require extra supplies of schnapps to steady nerves of my XO.

Had a similar convoy a couple of days (RL) back. One Black Swan a god knows how many assorted tankers and medium merchants with a few large cargo & ore carriers. So I took-out the Swan first, very carefully, lol. Then surfaced, manned the deck-gun and left them to it whilst I turned this way & that to loose-off the few remaining torpedoes I had left (it was towards the end of my patrol). Unfortunately, the gun-crew took it upon themselves to sink a small tanker - which turned-out to be a neutral, so I lost a little tonnage/renown. Nevertheless, I got back to port with a total of 132k

Good hunting there. Nice to see those ships nicely lining up ready to sunk:D
That'll teach those neutral countries to pack their merchants in with a combatant nation's convoys.
Gotta wonder why they'd do that. If they're neutral, they'd not need protection to begin with, correct? Had the same problem once. Put a couple of torps under a large tanker, which blew up juicily under the keel in perfect fashion. Later found out it was neutral. In a Brit convoy?
Well...that'll learn 'em.
Nice job, by the way, gunning an escort like that. Even I'm not THAT crazy on the attack.

Me either, I took-out the Swan with a torp, then surfaced. Insane I'll admit to, but I'm not crazy! :haha:

2 hours with minor damage-sounds like you should have plenty of air and battery power to stay under another 10 hours or so and try to creep away. Pretty risky trying to duel the escort when other options are still available. Creeping away, silent and deep is your best option with the occasional dash at flank speed during a DC run.
Now, on the other hand, if you're flooding and slowly sinking and find that you have to carry some speed to maintain depth, or your battery and/or air is low, there comes a point where you should blow the tanks and take the fight to the enemy.
