View Full Version : Empire Total War Deeply Discounted?
Saw ETW on Amazon was on sale for the previously unheard of price of $18.99 (about $24 after shipping).
Had to read twice, no three times, just to make sure I wasn't being scammed into buying a used copy of a Steam account game (there are people selling used copies of ETW :shifty: on amazon ya know.)
Anyway, got it today and it was factory sealed as advertised and installed and validated on steam without incident.
Now I have to wonder...
Did I just buy a game on Amazon from someone who works a stock job in a chain store and is stealing mdse to resell on Amazon? :o ...or is ETW already starting to occupy the bargain bins.

I don't know what to tell you all.
It's very odd. I have a legit version of the game for $18.99 (+4 S&H). The storefront I bought it from on Amazon had over 2000 buyer feedbacks and averaged 5 stars.
I don't see anymore on Amazon for $18.99 but there are a couple still in the $25 range.
Very strange... :hmmm:

A lot of people have had problems getting it to work-check out osome of the feedback on the ETW website-a lot of unhappy people around. Flogging off a game that isn't working for them is a way to recoup some of their losses.
I have to realy tweak my laptop to get it to run and then I get a CTD once every two or three hours-mainly in battles with a lot of units and then it starts raining or snowing-CTD! Usually just as I'm unleashing the hussars to ride down the fleeing remnants or as the last enemy unit holding the wall breaks and runs.:damn:
BUT...
I love it! Its a great game and if you've played any of the Total War series before you know what to expect, but with a LOT of details. You'll need a high end system to get the most out of it (and a few mods, of course) but it's still very addictive at low res. on Bessy II, my litttle laptop.

Been playing without issues for prolonged periods, latest patch and latest graphics drivers. Just not a game you want to be running on a laptop, I'm guessing the graphics chipset (or something else) is overheating. Some games nowadays don't even bother 'officially' supporting mobile chipsets anymore.

Maybe he is overstocked on them and they aren't moving. Wouldn't surprise me because of the STEAM CP.

Though Steam CP/DRM is a pita, it still beats having a burner busted by StarForce, getting an "insert correct DVD" error from SecuROM, or having to install the latest version of TAGES manually because of incompatibility.
Though Steam is very restrictive, it has never given me any headaches (yet). :-?
Well, the only real problem with Steam is when you reinstall Windows (like I did recently) and have to download all 15GB of Empire. Noooo, didnt backup local game content. Noooo, my mighty brain forgot that.
I am buying a DVD version when prices drop a bit more.

With games like etw... always go for the DVD.. lol
Yeah, i know, but it had that fancy preload thingy that was supposed to let me play the minute it was released. (Then the preload was canceled of course, and I ended up waiting way longer than the old school shoppers:damn:)

No problem with you DVD? I just bought from those guys too. A friend wanted to do some brainless dogfighting (something he will sorely lose at with me) so I bought the brainless dogfight sim HAWX. $24. It is not a game that is worth $50. $24 is somewhat bearable, but it is being sold for $50 everywhere else.

Yeah belive it or not, the DVD is fine; although I have to admit I was pretty skeptical. Took a few hours for steam to download patches and so forth, but it's all working now without a hitch.
I've been playing the opening campaign with the American colonists against the French and Indians. I think I'm on chapter 2 now; taken over a few territories and played through a few sea battles... not too far into it yet.
I thought the canon shot would do more damage against land units? ...is there a more potent grape/link shot variety to use against line formations? I like the "tinny" noise the canon makes when it fires, very distinctive.

Round shot just flies through, though they can bounce if they fall short and still knock a few guys over the head. Best for bringing down walls.
There's a whole range of ammunition types to be researched, though some require a low muzzle velocity (mortar and howitzer only).
For the cannon there's round shot, canister shot and I think eventually explosive (percushion) shells. Other options are carcass (flaming goo), quicklime (chemical burns) and explosive (set fuse) shots. For ships round-, grape- and chainshot are available.
Of the top of my hat, so I probably missed something. :hmmm:

You're referring to Canister shot, which is not shrapnel.
