I cannot tell you how much he will be missed. Capt. Zeb was a fine man, he served as a Captain of two subs in the US Navy (http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/bib/37953). He was a founder and catalyst for the Cavalla restoration (http://www.cavalla.org/cavcurr1.html). He was one of the first Cavalla men I interviewed in 1997 (http://www.cavalla.org/alford1.html)and he was the guest speaker at the 2004 Subsim Meet in Galveston (http://www.subsim.com/meet2004_event.htm). Most of all, he was my friend.
Salute. Zeb, you will be missed.
Neal
Zeb D. Alford
http://www.cavalla.org/zeb2.jpg
Zeb was born in McComb, Mississippi, in 1925. After graduating from McComb High School in January 1943, he joined the Navy the next day and attended LSU for one semester. He started his Navy career as a seaman apprentice in the V-12program at Tulane University on July1, 1943, and entered the Naval Academy in 1944.
After graduation inl947, he served as an Ensign aboard USS Charles R. Ware, an Atlantic Fleet destroyer. After graduation from Submarine School in 1949, he served aboard three diesel submarines and three nuclear submarines.
Zeb joined the nuclear Navy in 1958when selected by Admiral Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy. After nuclear school, his first nuclear assignment, as Executive Officer, was building and commissioning a new nuclear prototype in Connecticut. He was Executive Officer and commissioned the first nuclear submarine designed to find and kill other nuclear submarines, USS Tullibee. Every new class of nuclear attack submarines built since then has included updated versions of the active and passive sonar systems and the sound quieting methods of Tullibee. He attended Charm School (Admiral Rickover’s staff) for six months; then, as a Lieutenant Commander, here reported in 1962 as Commanding Officer of the nuclear attack submarine USS Shark. Shark was the first class of single screw, whale-shaped, high-speed, nuclear submarines. She was the fastest submarine ever built at that time.
As a Navy Commander in 1965, he became the Commanding Officer of the Polaris nuclear submarine USS Sam Houston. He became Executive Assistant to the Undersecretary of the Navy (now Senator John Warner[R-Va.]).
Zeb attended the National War College in 1970-71 and reported as Commanding Officer, Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Cuba, in 1971.
Zeb retired from the Navy in September 1973.Zeb’s second career has been in energy. Since entering this field he has become President of three different energy companies. In 1984 Zeb married Joan Chasan of Houston, Texas, and Long Island, New York. He has four grown daughters from a previous marriage.
In 1985 he started a new company, Dolphin Energy, Inc., and began to market natural gas to major utilities on both coasts.
Zeb was active in tennis, the Navy League, the Naval Academy Alumni Association, the Naval Order, and the Republican Party. He was elected a delegate to the state party conventions in 1996, 2000, and 2004. He was elected a member of the Texas Electoral College that met in Austin, Texas, in December1996.
In 1999 Zeb became Chairman of the Cavalla Historical Foundation, which raised money to restore the WW-II submarine USS Cavalla (SSK 244) and theDE-238 USS Stewart, both located at SEAWOLF PARK, Galveston Bay, Texas. Today they both have been restored and are open to the public for visits.
Tuesday evening, Aug 4, Capt. Zeb passed away after he suffered a heart attack Sunday evening and hitting his head on the tennis court.
Zeb had just returned from attending the Change of Command of the USS TEXAS and delivering the eulogy at Dave Hinkles (Sonalysts forunder) funeral. Zeb and Dave had served together on Cavalla SSK. Zeb also served as aid to Warner and Lehman. He remained an active and cheerful individual frequently speaking about Submarines, keeping up to date on Submarine technology and when he spoke, he always pointed out that the true Capital Ship of the U.S. Navy was the submarine, not some target.

You sound as if you knew the Captain fairly well. If so, please share some stories with us. I only got to meet him for an hour or so, and wished even then that it could have been more.

08-06-09, 11:52 AM
I am Baby Katie- the youngest of Zeb's 4 daughters. I followed Zeb into the military and was a Major in the Air Force. I figured since he had all girls, one of us better follow suit. So when I became a Captain in the Air Force it was fun for us to salute each other and say "Hello Captain"
Dad was such a great Dad - so generous, so kind to so many people, so patient with all his girls and loved all our pets we filled the house up with.
I always learned my leadership traits from Dad, as he always said "If you have a problem go to the Head of the Company" - He will be missed with all his long winded stories of the Navy and how he was in charge of feeding the "Swans" on the huge pond where he lives.
I love you so much Dad,
Baby Katie

It was my privilege and honour to meet your Dad at the Subsim meeting in 2004. My sincere condolences to you and your family.
Hello everyone,
I'm Peggy, the 2nd daughter. How wonderful to see your comments... they help us girls as we go through this time, now without our daddy. I have peace in knowing Dad died playing tennis, something he loved. But I have complete peace in knowing he had a relationship with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Saviour. We will all grieve losing him, but I rejoice knowing he is in Heaven, and I will see him again.
Dad couldn't have a conversation without weaving a Navy story through it. I would sometimes trick him and pick the farthest topic from the Navy, but I always failed. He managed it every time. Now it will be something that will make me chuckle, but many times I wanted to kick his butt about that. Dad was not a man of prejudice, and I respected him for that. He accepted whoever we brought home to meet him, and always said, "If you like them, then I like them." I loved talking world situations with Dad, and the state of this great nation. We could go on and on about that...I will miss those conversations dearly. He would sign off to each of us by saying, Love you baby. I loved hearing that on my answering machine if I were not at home.
We will miss our Dad. He was not a perfect man, but none of us are. Our imperfections become part of our personalities, and believe me, dad had a great, uplifitng personality. He has given us memories that we will laugh about forever.
I salute all of you who also served our country...I thank you for that. Dad was a true Patriot and he loved God, his family, and his country. We will miss you Dad and your memory will be kept alive. Love you baby! Peggy

Sounds like your dad was cut from the best piece of jib material. Those are the special ones indeed. Sorry for your loss.
:salute:What a tribute to my Dad. I have talked to a few of his friends in the past few days and , as a daughter, you know how great your Dad is but to hear it from so many other people is amazing.
Thank you all for the posts that I am reading. It was a sad day to lose my Dad but he went out doing the 2nd thing that he loved (the Navy being the first I know) and that was playing tennis. so if you have to go, that is the way to do it. I know he was not in any pain and for that I am forever grateful.
I am anxious to meet as many of you as I can at the memorial for my Dad and as soon as we have a date and time I will make a post letting you all know.
Dad was #1 in everything that he did but especially as a Father.

Dearest Dad,
I echo all of the things that katie, Peggy and Patti have said about you; you were the best father a daughter could ever want and I cherish the life and times we had together.
We shared so many wonderful adventures over the years; a memorable one being the canoe trip on the Buffalo Bayou with your grandson Lane, in a torrential downpour! What fun we had driving around Houston with that big green canoe on top of your cadillac!
May you have fair winds and a following sea on this part of your journey dad. I love and miss you so much.
Still your Baby Jane
So sorry for your loss.
Very respectfully,
Tim Deardorff
What an amazing tribute to our Dad this site has become. Once again it is great to go in and see what is being said about my Dad. We are trying to get a date for the Memorial Service and hopefully we will have that very soon so people can start making travel plans.
I will keep you posted..

Though I've never met the man, I feel a piece of the United States has been lost. A leader of men, who was led by his family. A very rare but endearing quality that when I too am gone would want to be remembered as. To the Alford family, thank you for sharing Zeb so that we could live in peace. :salute:

Dear Patty, Jane, and all:

We will be thinking of you and yours this evening.

I drink to his shade :()1:. Although I never met him, he was from my part of the world, a contemporary of my father (who probably met him somewhere along the line because they were in the same places at the same times), and I'm glad he salvaged Seawolf Park from the pile of rust it was when I last saw it. Cavalla sunk Zuikaku IIRC, and the DE alongside her is the last of her type, so it was a shame to see them falling apart when I last visited the place, before his efforts. Hurricane Ike messed them up last year, but I understand they've now been squared away again. Hopefully, his successors will keep them up.

I'm sorry to say I never met the man, but I know how much he has done and how much he matters to people. It's always a personal blow to me when one of these old veterans, with so much to say and tell, passes away, seemingly forgotten by the world. I am happy that he shared some of his experiences with us. I have the utmost respect for someone who has the courage to do what he did when most of us wouldn't consider it.
My sincere condolences,

I sincerely wish I had known Captain Alford. Men of honor and patriotism seem to be a vanishing breed these days. He obviously had the respect of his peers and his family, which is indicative of his good character.
I wish I could have thanked him for his service to our country. I am cognizant of the fact that my two young daughters can sleep safely in their beds because of brave men and women who dedicate their lives to preserving our freedom and independence. There is no peace without adequate defense.
Death takes so much from us. The only thing it gives in return is an appreciation for life. Thank you, Neal, for bringing this fine man to our attention. The world is a little darker with his passing, but we can keep the flame alive through honored remembrance.
Condolences to family and friends. I never met him, but he clearly made a big impression on those around him.
What a great tribute to a hero. We all owe him a debt for his service to our country. May God bless Captain Alford's family and friends during this time.

It is with heavy heart that I say:
"Time passes, seasons change,
history is written but you shall sustain,
the breath of time shan't forget,
your dutiful service to god and to sea.
I never knew you in flesh tis true,
yet we share a bond of life and dream,
Your valor shall remain and your memory too,
now go dear soul, for glory and peace.
Godspeed dear friend of the water,
for like the ancient mariner of days past,
be ever relieved and take thy rest,
you have sited land and are free at last".

Though I never knew of him and I could not find any information about his Naval Awards, what I was able to learn about him was that he was an amazing person that always seemed to step and do something, not just talk about it.
These are traits that most impress me in anyone that has been blessed with this trait, as it is a rare gift, and he seemed to have had it.
It is sad that he is gone but, it's much better that he will be remembered for all he had given during his time with us.

This is katie - his baby daughter. As a prior military woman I just want to say the heartfelt warmth I feel from all the praise and words of kindness Dad's fellow Military people have expressed here. Many a tear has been dropping on my desk as I have read your words. Dad taught me so much about being a patriotic person and how much the Navy meant to him. Back in the old days we used to always go on his Subs and eat dinner and flirt with all the sailors and they seemed to love it with Capt Zeb's 4 daughter's would come aboard.

Capt Alford, you Sir, are now on Eternal Patrol. God has given you command to watch over us all here still bound to this earth.
I had read that you had been assigned to 3 different Fleet Boats, but only the USS Cavalla is listed. Having served with honor on the USS Segundo, I can still recall my Captains. I'm sure that you were one of the Finest Officers the US Navy ever had. A man just does not say he's going to be a Submariner. It has to be in his blood and he has to show he is Qualified. Not only were you Qualified in Submarines, you were Qualified to Command Submarines. There are very few men that have that distinction bestowed upon them in their lifetime.
You Sir are a true American Hero, one we would not have hesitated to go to sea with. You could lead and we would follow, in doing our duty to God and Country.
By all written accounts you have brought your wife and daughters up in the naval tradition. Of understanding your dedication and duty to them and your Country. You brought to them love and guidance be at sea or home.
You Sir will not be forgotten, and many of the stories you told will be repeated over and over to your grandchildren, to friends, and to new friends that you will be introduced to through those stories........Rest In Peace Captain until the day our courses shall meet.....

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not go adrift;
He lighteth my passage across dark channels;
He steereth me through the deep waters,
He keepeth my log.
He guideth me by the evening star for my safety's sake.
Yea, though I sail mid the thunders and tempests of life,
I shall fear no peril, for Thou art with me,
Thy stars and heavens, they comfort me.
The vastness of thy sea upholds me.
Surely fair winds and safe harbors shall be found
All the days of my life;
And I shall moor, fast and secure, forever.

Life After Death
To Zeb and Family
Colonel David Marcus was killed in battle
during the Israeli War in June 1948.
In his wallet was found a card
that spoke of death. It read:
"I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails
to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean.
"She is an object of beauty and strength.
And I stand and watch her,
until at length
she is only a ribbon of white cloud
just where the sky and sea
come to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says,
'There! She's gone!'
"Gone where?
Gone from my sight--that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side,
and just as able to bear her load
of living freight--to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
"And just at the moment
When someone at my side says,
'There! She's gone!' there are other voices
ready to take up the glad shout,
'There! She comes!'
And that is dying."

i don't honestly know what to say when i read things like this, i never knew him and thats probebly my loss, but he looks to have had an amazing life, i wish my own could be filled with such adventure.
he's in the summerlands now with his shipmates :salute: may he rest in peace.
As a limey Brit, I think it's important to salute the service of those like Zeb not only to their own country, but also their service to the world, and the stability that they've brought to it. Without couragous people like him serving, acting as defenders of peace - long before I was even born - in a world that will so easily decend into chaos without vigilance; who knows what kind of world we would have?

I read with sadness of the passing of Capt Alford. A remarkable man, a consumate seaman, trusted and accomplished Captain, and I am sure, a fine shipmate to all who knew and loved him, as well as a beloved father and husband and freind. What a tribute to him as well, the posts by you four daughters, what finer tribute can a man have than to be loved by those he loved?
To go to sea, and to be at sea on a tour of duty, a voyage, one is far from home, far from port, and far out under the sky commanded only by one's compass, and the Lord of the Waters. Each time, one never knows what may come, yet men like Capt Alford have folowed that duty with cheer, strong hearts and the courage and compassion that character brings. Reading the tale of his career one can sense behind and between the words the immense dedication, attention and care given, and a life lived fully.
A life is like a voyage too, we are all of us far from the port that we were launched from, and none know when we may be called to make that final port of call. I had tears many times as i read these posts and thought of a life of duty and service and then folllowed by earnest and valiant additional work to help us all described here. I am only sorry i never will be able to meet this fine man. I am from a Naval family, and have been on two of Capt Alford's commands over past years, thought not I believe when he was in command. We are all here shipmates of a kind, and no better word describes the bonding and the fellowship that comes from service at sea and for shared goals and voyaging.
Fair winds, Captain, and though you have departed on your final voyage from us here, out there in that vast Ocean none of us may know yet, you are surely sharing your voyage with shipmates and loved ones both in spirit from here and who may have also passed on that journey as well.
I made a little picture of what i see as your final leave taking, a view I am sure you saw many times in the service.....and a wonderful last port of call to depart from...and to journey forth bearing so much love from those you leave behind your heart will be warmed forever and a day.
Salute

Uncle Zeb was an amazing person. He had such a full life. He reared four wonderful daughters. He had a wife that loved him. He had an outstanding career in the Navy. He was admired and respected. My brothers and I appreciate all that he did for us. He would be there for you at weddings, funerals, good times and not so good times. You could tell him anything. He was open, accepting, intelligent. He came from good stock and was grateful to and for his family. He told me how much thought of his grandparents and parents. I remember once we were studying famous Mississippians in grade school and the teacher told the class about him. He lived life large. His daughters, wife, family, friends, co workers thought he was great. That says it all.
Didn't know him but what an impressive career, hats off to him.
RIP ZEB.

Thank you to all who have posted your thoughts, stories and accolades for my Grandfather, Captain Zeb Alford. I am his Granddaughter Samantha and am so proud to be so. I can always remember being in awe of him as a child, and as an adult. He experienced a life that most people only to get to see in movies. I loved hearing his Navy stories and never tired of them. From spending summers on our farm in New Hampshire to crawling around in the Cavalla, I have the most wonderful memories of him. He was the greatest man I have ever known. A patriot, a family man, a living part of history. I have always been drawn to the sea and I believe I get that from him. Some of our favorite talks of late were of my scuba diving trips and how I always feel like I belong under the water. I will think of him every time I descend...imagining him always being under the sea with me.
Calm seas ahead for you Granddad...I know you will be watching over me always.

Small world!
We were on the same boat, just not at the same time ...
As a Navy Commander in 1965, he became the Commanding Officer of the Polaris nuclear submarine USS Sam Houston.
I did not report aboard the USS Sam Houston till 1970 and of course being an enlisted man we would not have had too many discussions anyway, especially with Zeb being the captian, but I know and respect many men like Captain Zeb.
Smart, quick, calculating, alert, someone to respect, a leader of men and machines, sleep with one eye open for the radioman at the door.
No doubt in my mind that he would've done whatever the President of the United States ordered him to do.
So long Captain Zeb see you on the other side ...
I hope eternal patrol has mid rats (food for those going on watch lol)

To the code name of Admiral Von Gerlach - I loved the picture of a submarine going under the Golden Gate Bridge as Dad was in Cali alot in his early carreer and 3 of his little sailors were born in Cali while he was stationed out there. I am so blessed Dad knew and loved Jesus as he is up there loving all your memories of him and probably adding a few more

That's the one....I'm within walking distance of that church. I will see if I can get time off from work (should be no big deal) to attend.
Dear Precious friends,
I am Peggy, the 2nd dtr., again. You are very special to my sisters and me. Your thoughts and prayers are uplifting and I wish I could meet all of you.
My dad is getting much glory and I thank you for that. He served his country well and I am grateful and very proud of him. I already miss him so much, but to me he was my dad. I didn't have to salute him, just had to mind him. He used to lasso us as we ran across our oceanfront yard in Maine. He and mom took us trick or treating. He was a great Santa Claus. He was a big horse we could ride. He was a fabulous jump roper. We snow skiied, sailed, and scuba dived together. He could navigate by the stars. To me, sometimes he seemed bigger than life itself.
But I want you to know a bit about the hero who didn't get the recognition, but did one of the toughest jobs ever...raising 4 of the next generation...our dear mother, Margaret, who is alive and well. I dare say Dad could have had such an illustrious career had it not been for my mother supporting his every career move, packing and unpacking houses while he was at sea, birthing 4 daughters, getting us in schools, hosting incredibe events for other military personnel, getting 4 little girls cleaned and dressed and on time to submarine christenings and other Navy events, helping younger officer's wives who were having difficulty adjusting to new surroundings, keeping dad present in our lives while he was miles away under the ocean, being a mom and dad while he was gone for 3 to 6 months at a time, hosting more rockin' Navy parties than I can remember at all of our different homes, making each new house a home that looked like it was off the pages of House and Garden, refurbishing homes - at times by herself...I have hit only the tip of the iceberg. To all you Navy men in my dad's generation, I applaud your brave wives who gave you comfort and the freedom to serve your country as effectively as you did.
My dad retired from the Navy in 1973 and years later in 1984, sadly, my parents divorced. It was heartbreaking for us girls. But when my parents were together they gave us the best and most wonderful childhood I could ever imagine. We were all grown women when their marriage ended. It didn't hurt any less at that age.
Fortuneately, they both infused much love as we grew up. They taught us all the good lessons one needs to learn. They had fun together, they laughed together, they danced together, and they always played with their girls. God's greatest gift to me was giving me my parents.
I just wanted you to know a bit about my other hero.
Peggy

Katie, i am glad you liked the picture of the Golden Gate, it came to me as a symbol of your dad's times at sea and i figured you all had lived in California, either up there or San Deigo both having sub bases..i have lived in both and grew up myself out there too, and know that pattern of moves, having moved 24 times before i was 21 :) Peggy, that was a very touching tribute to your mom, Margaret and our hearts to out to you and to her and all that you describe. Life is not always easy but it is always precious, and it is clear that your parents gave you all a full cargo of love, care and the best of values which all are the foundations of character.
If i could come i would but am recoving from a long series of operations...but your sharing with us and this chance to honour dad has uncovered in all of us i think a deep welling up of love and respect that we all feel, and we will be there in spirit for the serivce, and with you in the days, months and years ahead when you feel the void that your dad's passing has left...but remember he did not leave really, he is jost gone on ahead, under the stars that shine far out to sea....and he and what he is and what you love in him will be part of you always. Rest in peace skipper.
Another American hero has begun his final patrol.
I offer my sincere condolences at this loss.
Thank goodness our nation has such men.
As I was walking one of my puppies this morning at 5:30 am I thought of my Dad because there was a beautiful full moon and I remember that one of Dad's favorite time was when he was on the bridge of his sub and there was a full moon shining over the silent ocean.
He also loved to come out to the SW desert and walk in the desert sands. He always found a great walking stick and I still have the last one he had from his last visit.
There are so many great memories that I have and I know Dad is still watching over me as he has always done and I even bet that he has a full audience up in Heaven and he is telling some great Navy stories (just hope they have not heard them already-even though that did not matter at all to Dad).
I hope I can meet alot of you at his memorial on August 21st.
Navy Junior Patti signing off:arrgh!:
Rest in peace skipper.
Where you on the USS Shark? That was one of the subs that my Dad was on too:yeah:

It is with the greatest respect that I have compiled your comments concerning my father in law. Capt. Zeb D. Alford, your fellow hero.
A heart felt salute to you for your service to mankind, from whatever country or branch of service, Thank You. :salute:
Some gave life or limb but all of you are the true hero’s that “offered” to give your life for peace and the freedoms we enjoy. You are the men and women of honor and patriotism. All of you that are dear friends of the water are true American Hero’s. Although you may have never known him, you are forever part of his legacy through your service to the world. He was NAVY and you are NAVY, you are all here shipmates of a kind. It is for the great things that all of you did to improve and add to the human experience that you can claim Capt. Alford as part of your life!
We the Alford family thank you.
Because of what you have done, you will forever be part of our love and respect.
Look for “An Interview with Zeb D. Alford” April 2007 in The National Museum of The Pacific War, Center for Pacific War Studies, Fredericksburg, Texas some time after the museum reopens December 07, 2009. You’ll get to read when Zeb told Admiral Rickover that he had just graduated with a degree in math and physics then Rickover, chuckled, and said “what a waste of time compared to my school”.
Enters ‘The Nuclear Era’.
The Alford daughters are as wonderful as they seem. Thanks Capt. Zeb.

And I hope you girls and other family will keep in touch and come by and visit with us when you can. We are your shipmates of the SubSim community and will be here for you.

Our condolances go out to Joan, Margaret and to their four daughters, as well as his many, many friends.
Cap'n Zeb was truly an Officer and a Gentleman, of the highest order. It's because of heroes like him and all of our servicemen/women, that we're able to enjoy the liberty and freedoms that we possess today, which he was so proud of in his service.
If you'll indulge me.... we 1st had the honor, privalege and pleasure to meet Zeb when one of his Navy League colleagues and a mutual friend, Brian Klock, introduced my brother and I to him, to assist in raising money for the crew's activities during the week of the commissioning of the USS Texas, down in Galveston(back inthe Fall of 2006).
As the story goes, during some of the rather contentious meetings on a few occasions, Brian was trying to sell the committee on a bunch of us O&G folks putting on a play for the Captains' reception(the night before the commissioning) to raise that money. Amateurs that we all were but seasoned at having raised over $1 million for charaties in the local Houston area, it was suggested to the committee that we combine with the crew and weave several scenes from "The Best Little Whorehouse"(renamed "The Chicken Ranch"), "Chicago", "Road to Key West" and of course, "South Pacific" into our presentation. Brian conveyed to me that, as you can imagine, the traditional Navy committee members were squirming about the whole "play" affair, not to mention anything referring to the Chicken Ranch(i.e.Tailhook redux), because First Lady Laura Bush and practically every Admiral in the Navy was going to be there.
Finally, after listening to input from everyone on the committee, all eyes turned to Cap'n Zeb, and with his cheshire cat grin and folksy laugh, piped in "What's wrong w/the Chicken Ranch? There's probably nothing more represenative of the Navy". Obviously, that drew a huge laugh and from that point on, the play was on.
Word was that he, the Texas crew and many of the cast members shut down several of the Galveston establishments during that week.
Fittingly, he had a spot playing Admiral Nimitz during the play, when he conveyed to the audience, as has been noted previously, that "Submarines were now the Capital ships of the Navy". Truer words were never spoken.
Just over a year ago, he invited several of us, through Brian, to come down and tour the USS Cavalla. We were in awe that this great sailor and gentlemen was not only conveying history, he lived it on that very boat.
Fair winds, Blue skies and Calm Seas on your last patrol, from your friends Rae Lynn and John Wertz.

I love the sub pictures, I can almost see my Dad Zeb on watch and he loved to moon on the ocean. Thank you so much for that pictures and kind words. I am the #1 daughter (that sounds a whole lot better than the oldest one!) Patti

Hate to correct #1 (oldest daughter) but she said Dad liked to "Moon on the Ocean" Is that shoot the moon - I am sure lots of sailors did that but not Zeb - He did tell us some stories that went on in the subs for 6 months out at sea that would make "Shootin' the Moon" seem mild

Zeb you are a one of a kind…..being your son in law for 25 years…I have been lucky to see the extraordinary qualities that you were blessed with and more importantly to see how effortlessly you walked through every facet of this life and how you extracted every ounce of life out of the time that you were given on this earth.
I have always admired how quick you were to forgive and forget and how you never let anything stand in the way of your focus to show your love to your daughters.
Your, ability to never meet a stranger and always leave that encounter having told them a story that resonated with what ever was going on in their life. Yes! I know the story more then likely was one of your passionate stories from one of greatest adventures and loves of your life the “Navy” … “I also know that any one who was lucky enough to hear one of your stories was lucky enough” .
Zeb The world and in particular our great country is a better place today because of your service to your country and to every human being you met. Thank you for your tireless service.… …You presence, wisdom and love will deeply be missed…may God bless you with all the rest and peace that you deserve. I am one of those that was “lucky enough”
Love you and miss you! :yeah:

I am qualified to answer that question mam: Two years 63-65 USS Salmon SS 573 and USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 blue crew three patrols 66-70 and USS Sam Houston SSBN 609 blue crew 70-71
We ate a lot of good food, watched all of the Mission Impossiable, Star Trek and Clint East Wood series.
Told sea stories, played cards, acey duecy, cribbage, hearts, ate pop corn, read books, shaved, washed clothes, slept and once in awhile we would play Navy which was very dangerous sometimes.

My family(step-dad is Lt Cmdr John Shearin) met the Alfords in Gitmo in 1971. My sister, Lisa Smith, became "Baby Katie's" best friend. Because of that special relationship, we all became friends of Capt Alford and his sweet family. What a fun family- smart, witty, adventurous, and they totally loved and bonded with my Mississippi family. The Alfords treated Lisa as one of their's and included her on some fun Caribbean adventures. I still have her T-shirt and many pictures from one of them. Because Lisa and Katie couldn't bear to part at the end of the tours in Gitmo, the Alfords invited Lisa up to New Hampshire to live for the remainder of the school year. She loved every minute of it. We loved sharing her with them. Because my sweet Lisa died in a car wreck in 1976, while a freshman at the University of Southern Mississippi, Katie has become my angel, my confidant, my friend in Lisa's memory. Thank you Capt Alford for giving life to this special person. Thank you for your service to our country. I hope Lisa was waiting at the gate for you with a big smile, ready to begin heavenly adventures much like the ones you provided her with while she spent so little time on this earth. Thanks for the memories. God Bless your family!

Oh I so am getting a heart full of love and memories and I feel like Dad is just wrapping his arms around his little baby Katie now and saying "Hey I will let your best friend in life, Lisa, know you are well"- It is a special bond to know where we will be in eternity with the Lord and I know Joan and Dad had that special love for the Lord together. He used to tell me all about their bible studies together.

Grandad Zeb, Thank you for all your contributions to your world, you lived a long and successful life. You held many positions of leadership and made many accomplishments in your life but most importantly and most personally you taught a great deal about the wondruous world i was born into and inherited from you and your grandparents. You have taught me about constellations in the night sky, you have taught me about the stories of men and women in war, in peace, in hardship, and in wealth. You have taught me about the flowing and ebbing tides of the great seas, the earth's rotation around the sun, the tilt of the earth, you have told me many a tale, some tall some small, all fascinating when told through your words, in your specific way of speaking, your tone, your dialect, your passion for learning and insatiable curiousity coming through your words. Thank you for all your communication with me during our physical time together. You are a hero to me and an inspiration. I am thankful i had the honor to sit face to face with you, eyes confidently set to your eyeline and connect with a man who has drifted among the tides, swam with sharks and dolphins, spoken with and worked among many a great man and woman, and shared all the stories of the past, present, and future together. Thank you Grandad! Love you, sail in peace

Almighty God,
I pray for those who knew and loved Zeb Alford, and those whom he loved in turn.
Give them strength and comfort, assuage their grief with your Holy Spirit and succor their hearts with Your love.
Lift up their eyes to Heaven, O Lord, and raise their spirits in the knowledge that this man is now in Your glory, awaiting them and looking toward the day when they shall be reunited for all eternity.
Give unto them the peace that comes with understanding, Holy Father, that Zeb has not truly died but now resides by Your right hand alongside our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ, biding a short time until the Resurrection.
May Your love and blessings be upon them all and their memory of Zeb will bring many cherished joys to heart, that they may know he lives on within the lives he touched and in Your Kingdom.
Amen
I offer this prayer in the sincere hope you will indeed be comforted in your loss. It took me some days to bring myself to write this. The loss of my own dad is still too recent. My Dad was my best friend, like I'm sure Zeb was to his own children.
There is one great realization that has brought me solace and I hope it will do the same for you...
As a Christian, there really is no such thing as death. When you think of the one you have lost, it's not so much a matter of "Goodbye." as it is "See you later!".
He's just gone ahead to Home while the rest of us must stay behind a little longer because God has need of us here, to share that love given to us by people such as my dad and Zeb Alford. Give it freely and to everyone, from the highest Admiral to the lowest fisherman.

I met Catp. Zeb while helping with the Cavalla restoration. When the CHF was founded, there were some bad feelings amongst some of the initial volunteers, but Zeb kept a steady hand and never turned anyone away who wanted to help. The first few months were pretty lean with little funding, but Zeb went out and almost singlehandedly raised over $150,000 during the first year. Over time, he was directly responsible for over $500,000 in funds raised and who knows how much indirectly. I always enjoyed my time spent with Zeb and he truly loved Submarines and Submariners. To all the men and women (a few) who have posted about our Dad- it is just an amazing tribute to the senior men who are leaving this earth and taking so much history with them. I always bugged Dad to write a book. Does anyone know if he did? I want to thank GRAF PAPER for your spiritual prayer. It meant so much to me being a strong believer in Christ.
To Admiral Von Gerlach- I loved the message to sent to Neal with your Angel artwork. They were exquisite; as have been all your supporting words to his girls. To John Wertz- Your email and story about Dad's humor and working with him reminds me so much of how he was.
My gratitude is coming to you all.
