Well... I HAD an Nvidia 8800 GTS a few hours ago. I fired up Rainbow Six Vegas 2... saw a pyschadelic display and my computer crashed to the desktop at 640x400 resolution. LOL!
Get this... my new flight chair arrives tomorrow. Well... I'll just take this one in the ass I guess.
I guess I'm in the market for a new card. I'm looking to pay around $230 with a possible performance boost.
I need recommendations sub buddies.

@Snakeeyes Sorry to hear about this expensive loss.
If you live in USA I recommend TigerDirect if you live in California.
More choices and just about the best prices.
Hope you find a good deal. :salute:
edit: I think we also have a swapmeet forum here too.

What I got not long ago. I can't tell a big difference between it and my older 9800, some crisper colors, little faster. The good news is we can now get great video cards cheap. Even a 9600gt only $70.00

I would have posted Newegg and Fry's but I pay almost 10% sales tax here in Calif.
I have a buddy that had to do that to get his car to the shop to get the windshield fixed. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

AVGWarhawk
08-05-09, 08:26 AM
It is all about amps. See what your PSU is putting out amp-wise and then find out how many amps the card needs to run correctly.
Rockin Robbins
08-05-09, 08:47 AM
Needs 575 watts for single card, 680 for sli. Whew! You'll brown-out the neighborhood.:up::up:
Snakeeyes
08-05-09, 08:53 AM
Yeah... I think I'm screwed.... my power supply is maximum 500 watts....
specs on the card state: Minimum 550 Watt or greater system power supply with a 12V current rating of 40A (630 Watt or greater recommended for non-SLI and 680 Watt or greater recommended for SLI)
The only things I have in my slots are a low power wireless antenna, and my sound card.
Here is my power supply specs... sorry for the poor photo but you would not believe how I had to contort myself to get in there upside down.
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn174/cobrabase/0805090940.jpg
The verdict? I can't afford a new power supply...
If no good with only these power specs I would love to ask what card you would recommend as your #2

It is looking for 36 amps. Your PSU is cranking 17 amps on the 12V rail. The card will run but it is possible for the card to fail with the power to be very low from the PSU.
Go for the 9800 you were looking at. With that card you can get a bigger PSU supply also!

Looking at the graphic I would say no. But, that is all subjective because RAM and CPU speeds play a factor in total overall game experience.

Funny, I had the same last sunday with my Nvidia 8800 GTX. I started Darkest Hour, the screen went into green vertikal stripes like Matrix and then back to desktop. After reboot, the display showed still these green stripes and every time some seconds later came a blue screen -> VRAM corrupted.
Yesterday I bought a Nvidia 275 GTX, which was cheaper as the 8800GTX at his time.:know:

Unfortuneatly this has been happening, a lot with Nvidia GPUs in laptops. I can't bring up a link off the top of my head but go google Nvidia GPU Solder problem, hitting some of their laptop parts (6150, 8400MGS and 8600MGS to name a few) really hard. I have heard of some desktop cards failing (8400, 8500 and 8600) but I haven't heard of this affecting the 8800s until now. I used to have an 8800GT that ran pretty damn hot (stock reference cooling system, she would hit 100*C under load) but I am quite happy with my ATI HD4870. I usually recommend ATI now for GPUs, even though they do have some driver issues, I have to say that in my experience the MODERN (I.E came out within the last 2 years) ATI cards/chips are more reliable than Nvidia has become. Either way good luck with your new card.

The Bandit
08-05-09, 10:49 PM
yeah I could ramp up the fan on it and it would help out a bit, fan was quite loud on it though and led to an RMA (The bearing or somthing went in it and the fan blades started rubbing on the fan sink). This was the 8800GT just packs too much in a single slot layout. my 4870 gets never runs over 65*C and has a really nice cooler but I think it also has better thermal management for triggering the fans.

08-06-09, 12:05 AM
I can't remember off of the top of my head. It was a factory OC card and I pretty much left the timings alone (never was slow doing anything so I figured why bother), all I really did was turn u p the fan. As far as I know the guy who has it now still has the 2nd card working for him (mentioned in the first post that my first one was RMAed due to a bad fan)

actualy... just played with crysis...(like to blow up things in that game.lol)
I got board and cranked up the resoultion to 16xx x 1xxx... amasingly it ran it with alittle lag... with a new custom config im useing, and some settings on veary high... card got only up to 62 degrees when I exited.
The Bandit
08-06-09, 02:57 AM
nope, mine was a 512mb 8800GT not a GTS, mine was only single slot, yours runs so cool because it has a 2 slot design (the heat sink and fan take up another slot in the case which also doubles as an exhaust port to vent hot air out of the case) where as the single slot one not only has a smaller heat sink but just vents the air down into the case.
Here is what mine looks like
