America's future: An intriguing, much more equal rivalry out West. (http://www.economist.com/opinion/displaystory.cfm?story_id=13990207)

AMERICA’S recent history has been a relentless tilt to the West—of people, ideas, commerce and even political power. California and Texas, the nation’s two biggest states, are the twin poles of the West, but very different ones. For most of the 20th century the home of Silicon Valley and Hollywood has been the brainier, sexier, trendier of the two: its suburbs and freeways, its fads and foibles, its marvellous miscegenation have spread around the world. Texas, once a part of the Confederacy, has trailed behind: its cliché has been a conservative Christian in cowboy boots, much like a certain recent president. But twins can change places. Is that happening now?

Controversy? :O:

Now immigration is likely to reconvert Texas from Republican red to Democratic blue; Latinos may justly demand a bigger, more “Californian” state to educate them and provide them with decent health care.

Enjoy it while it lasts, boys.

I must have missed the class when they taught that. I thought it was Alaska and Texas. California is #3, no?

What's wrong with treating human beings equally?I don't disagree, but until I see you libs display a little of the outrage you have for the treatment of the homosexual community towards the treatment of, say, woman in Islamic countries, its hard to take you seriously.

Besides - gays have equal rights. What they want are special rights. I won't bother with them until they admit it.

It will be interesting to see how that plays out. The border counties are already blue, but the holdouts especially amongst the rural counties will cause friction.

I suppose if immigrants spread north it will have an effect, but if they remain concentrated along the border, it will be a purple Texas.

Or that thing called 'affimative action' which gives people advantages based on race. Doesn't sound equal to me.

Regardless of legal citizenship status :03:

Yes it is clearly stated at least in the current draft of the Healthcare bill that illegal ailens would be covered. Ms. Pelosi insisted on it.

Let me help....

During consideration of the health care reform bill (H.R. 3200 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d111:h.r.03200:)), the House Ways & Means Committee rejected an amendment that would have helped ensure illegal aliens would not receive taxpayer-funded health care benefits.
The amendment, offered by Rep. Dean Heller (R-NV), would have required the government to verify that enrollees in the "public plan" and applicants for "affordability credits" are not illegal aliens.

Ok, but where does it say Pelosi insisted that illegal aliens be covered? Where did she specifically say "I want illegal aliens to be covered by this health bill. I insist."

I'm not seeing it. I see that someone urged her to do it, but I don't see where she said "I insist." If you're going to criticize something, that's fine. But making up stuff about it doesn't add anything to the debate.

Maybe I'm having some reading comprehension problems, but nowhere in the article did I see that Nancy Pelosi insisted that illegal immigrants be covered.

I could urge Nancy Pelosi to exempt me from paying income tax, but that doesn't mean that she insisted that I be.

Round 2 -- fight! (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203550604574361014098225036.html)

Texas created more jobs in 2008 than the rest of the states—combined. No wonder over half a million people flooded into Texas between 2000 and 2007. Meanwhile, 1.2 million residents left California in the same seven-year period.

California needs a strong leader, says Texas governor Rick Perry. That strong leader, Mr. Perry thinks, needs to go to Sacramento and "take special interests out" of government. He needs to "make massive cuts" in spending and taxes. And he needs "to make major changes in the constitution," including tort reform.

What about Arnold Schwarzenegger? "Arnold—I think Arnold squandered that chance."

Six years ago, Mr. Perry's state underwent a critical tort reform that was codified in the state constitution. The payoff is that Texas is now outpacing California economically. According to the Texas Public Policy Foundation, between 1997 and 2006 Texas' economy grew an average of 4.3% while California's grew at a rate of 3.7%. But as of 2002 (to 2007), with tort reform in place, Texas' annual economic growth jumped to 5%, while California's remained essentially the same at 3.6%.

Because "whites" ever since this country was created, didn't have any advantage over American Indians ,Hawaiians and Eskimos..(you know people who are actually NATIVE TO THIS LAND CALLED AMERICA) correct? And lets not forget the Blacks who's forefathers were dragged to this country.Or the Hispanics were work in the fields and build your homes for the minimum of wages yet at one point owned much of what is now the Western United States!

All in the name of Manifest Destiny correct?

Texas has no state income tax. Cali has a high one.

Texas has a lower sales tax rate than does Cali.

The property taxes in Texas are high, but those in CA per "home" are at least as high.

Registering your vehicle in Texas is much cheaper than in Cali.

Texas is friendly to business. Cali insists on taxing and regulating them nearly to death.

Texas has minimal social engineering. Cali is a HQ for the practice.

Texas encourages and celebrates self reliance. Cali fosters dependence, which is doubled down in many parts of the state, such as the Bay area.

Texas and Cali are both blessed with natural resources. Texas encourages their responsible development. Cali wants the gasoline for its many motor vehicles, but does not want to "risk" its coast line or allow refineries.

Texas has a very imperfect governor who is too often a conduit to big business and special interest, including a Spanish limited partnership which has a major stake in his toll road sell out. Most don't know that Republican governor Perry received only 39% of the vote in the last election, which featured two strong independent candidates. Had the Democrats had the good sense to run a conservative member of their party (as was common in the 1960's and 1970's), they probably would have won.

CA has an irresponsible legislature, which can not spend enough money. It's a foreshadowing of our national future.

Both Texas and Nevada, whose taxes are even lower than Texas, have received an influx of former Californians. Many more will come for tax and business reasons as the boomers age.

We hope that the committed liberals fleeing the Golden State will go north to Oregon.

Obviously you didn't get the memo, it's already over.

I've lived in San Diego and Houston. I've seen it all.

Walking in Galveston I saw someone carrying a surfboard. I chuckled and asked "What are you planning to do with that?" When he said "surf" I thought he must really be a great surfer, because he was going to have to paddle about 1,800 miles to find a decent wave.

Walking in San Diego I saw a guy with a Stetson, a belt buckle as big as a hubcap, topped off with shorts and flip-flops. I asked where he was from and he said "Hoooston" I replied, "really? which planet?"

I've lived in portland all my life (25 years) and it's time for me to move on. The transplants are rude, the homeless and mentally ill are everywhere and the city caters to them, and housing is unaffordable. Also, I'm straight which means finding a partner is not gonna happen. It seems as if progress can't be made in portland. You'll never "go up" in the city because there's nowhere/ nothing to reach to. It especially sucks here for me since I'm a college educated, single, straight african-american female. The people here are racist and inrant towards minorities but if you're a white homosexual(not that there's anything wrong with that) the city will welcome you with open arms. The weather is dreary, the people lack class and bikers are taking over the city. If you drive a car, you're a demon.
A little advice for any minorities thiking about moving here....DON'T DO IT! move to Seattle, it's great there. Lot's of diversity, plenty to do and the people are educated and respectful.
