:oI've just got done dying but made a list of questions as I was going along. If you can answer any please post for me as I would greatly appreciate it. I've owned SH3 since it came out and dusted it off a week ago. I am running GWX and SH3 CMDER. Some questions are more complicated then others so here it goes: (bug questions? @ end)

1) Sea Depth: looking at the map (F5) is there any way of telling where the deeper parts are? Not sure if the shades were real or not.
2) Shake down cruise? Why? Just curious.
3) Using the mod "base at sea" does it result in any loss of renown? And not returning to port have any influence on anything?
4)Crew in blue: I had a couple of crew members in blue which I thought meant that they were eligable for promotions and such but didn't see where I could do this. I exited and went into SH3CmD and upgraded a sailor with a stripe. Went back into the game and he was still blue. Yes I wrote his name down so I had the right guy.

5)Insert waypoint: According to the GWX manuel your suppose to be able to insert waypts using CTLR+let click. doesn't work. It takes you back to your u boat.
6)Can you still crash into another vessel? If your time comp. is way up and goes back to 1 or normal time I suppose if you were not paying attention you could still crash. I think the stock game purposely put ships in your way. Does this version?
8)what about ships with no markings? sink em?
9)wile starting my career (which just ended horribly) I had a ship dead in the water and wanted to try and finish it off with the deck gun. It said "NO MORE AMMUNITION". I never even used the deck gun so how could I be out of ammunition.
+++++++++++++++++++++++
10)BIG PROBLEM. I HAD NO OR LITTLE SOUND.
No men talking, not all sound effects either. I was wondering if this has something to do with selecting "realistic crew" in SH3CmD before the start. I think that was the only thing I changed.:o Up until this last game everything worked fantastic.

I don't know all the answers but realistic crew (transfers) has nothing to do with sound problems. :yep:

1. yes, the darker parts are deeper. Selecting a marker on the map gives you an approximate scale. Be aware that the left part of the map is kind of dirty :D
2. I'm sure that some one from the GWX team will provide a better explanatons, but here are my 2c
- to get familiar with the boat (diving depth, dive and turn times etc)
- get an additional qualification for one crew member before going for the first war patrol
- there's a bug in SH3 which sometimes costs you your renown if you upgrade the boat (and tamper with the crew?) before first patrol. After the shakedown patrol you can safely upgrade.
- the most important: you can get to your patrol grid before the war starts, as it was done historically
3. I don't use "base at sea" and can't speak from experience, but it shoudn't lose you any renown. Not returning to base won't influence anything, but will make your patrol a bit shorter. :DL You will lose the joy of sailing into friendly port after long and hard patrol. :sunny:
4. THe crewmember is blue in the Crew management screen after patrol, if he's eligible for medal, promotion or qualification, depending of which of those you selected.
5. Click on the waypoint, then CTRL + left click
6. If you're asking this out of the fear of collision at sea, don't be afraid. I've never had one, the other vessels will avoid you, regardless of sea conditions or TC. Beware of the docks, though. :rotfl:
7. :hmph:
8. :hmmm: I've never seen a ship without the markings. Perhaps you mean the light ships, sometimes found in coastal waters? I don't know if they can be sunk...
9. Click on the shell icon to reload the gun. You only have to do once during the patrol.
10. It looks to me like you tampered with the Time compression settings in Commander. Try reseting them.

Hope this helps.

AHHH very good Meduza and Rafael. I did mess with that time compression. I will try that now.

7):salute: Oh, rank in renown. You know the screen where you see how good or bad your doing compared to other AI commanders. I was just wondering if it was based on the same Flotila your in or if it's suppose to be everyone OR if its just crap all together. :arrgh!:

It's for the all commanders. In SH3Comm you get your previous commanders (from old careers) too. I'm not sure if they are in the in-game screen.
And the scores are related to time.

2) The real answer is both simple and seemingly backwards. For years now those of us using SH3 Commander have seen the Sept. '39 news while waiting for the game to load, and it mentions that 14 u-boats were sent to sea on August 19th. We've complained about having to wait until the war actuallys starts before we can go on patrol.

The August 1st start is not so you can do a shakedown cruise, or anything like that. It's so you can be on station when the war starts. Unfortunately even Commander and GWX can't make the game start you on any other day but the first of the month. What you do is use SH3 Commander to set your Days-In-Base to 20, start that August 1 patrol, immediately leave it and start the second patrol. That should put you underway on the 21st or so.

Me, I always keep it set to Random and take my chances.

Just to follow up.

11) was the time compression that messed it up, seems to be working now TY
10) yes clicking on ammunition gives you ammo TY
8)ships with no markings as in "no flag"

5)Insert waypoint. Still couldn't get that to work, maybe I am misunderstanding what it actually is. If you have 10 waypoints but find that you need to add another between your sub and the next wypt, can you insert a waypoint instead of erasing them all and starting over.:shifty:

Now for a few more questions:

I thought you could only use the sonar underwater or is that sub specific.
was using IIA now using a VIIB.

Why are some crew experienced after the shakedown cruise and others are not. I tried to use everyone in the shakedown, even shot off a couple of minnows, deck gun and flak gun.

Thanks for your help.:salute:

Any screenshots?

You can't insert a waypoint between the sub and another wp, only between two of them. But you can move the first WP and insert another one (or more) after it.

THat's right, the sonar works only when you're submerged.
There are two types of sonar - passive (the hydrophones - not realy a sonar, just a listening device), which is on board every sub at the start, and the active one, which becomes available after some time. I don't know if the active sonar can be fitted to the Type II.

Why are some crew experienced after the shakedown cruise and others are not. I tried to use everyone in the shakedown, even shot off a couple of minnows, deck gun and flak gun.
I'm not realy sure how the experience works.
Thanks for your help.:salute:
You welcome. :D

I will try to get a screenshot of the "no flag" ship(s) I've seen. :yep:

TY on the waypoint confusion. I will try it out.

Doing this career with a VIIB and was surfaced when I got the call out "merchant....bearing....etc" :o

It can happen sometimes, with the high waves. The bow briefly submerges, getting the hydrophones under water.

Meduza did a great job for you. Here at subsim, people are always happy if they can help! :know:

I don't know the mod "base at sea", but if you made a mod mistake name ... in SH3 Commander there is "start patrols at sea", this has no influence concerning your renown.

How about your sound now? or

Hey. My sound is back and everything is going well. Still out on my 1st wartime patrol for this current career and I am 2 for 2 for about 17k.
I avoided the kanal, which is good advice. :yeah:
I didn't think about the waves rolling over the ship, maybe thats what happened cuz I haven't heard anything this career on the surface. :know:

OH I haven't seen the no flag ship but I will try to get a screenshot. :D
