I got a straight razor today when I visited the local antique shop, being the traditionalist I am.
I just got out of the shower, and just got done shaving my pretty face (mainly just a trim, I like my goatee) and WOW!
considering I got this thing for a couple bucks, thats one amazing shave!
I'm going to take to our little barbershop, with any lucky he wont be busy and maybe he can sharpen it further for me.
Its truly amazing the quality you get from one of these things,
mines made by
Dixie Manufacturing Company
in Union City, GA.
wonderful buy!:yeah:
theres tutorials online so you don't slit your throat while youre shaving.
which is always a plus
Screw shaving, I prefer the close cut of a flamethrower.

I'm way too chicken for a straight razor, plus way too time crunched most mornings.
But I did buy a Merkur safety razor:
http://www.sesto-senso.com/merkur-safety-razor-barber-pole-open-12C.jpg
Plus a nice badger bristle brush and real save soap...not that drugstore stuff out of a can. The difference is amazing. I pay pennies for replacement blades and no more razor burn! Of course there is a little learning curve, and the first time you use it you'll probably end up looking like you shaved with a chainsaw, but after a couple days you get the hang of it.
I wouldn't go back to shaving any other way!

I love how they keep adding blades to the damn things, I'm waiting for the 10 blade razor that takes most of your face off on the first pass. Personally i prefer single or double edge blades. Any more then that and it will tend to irritate my face.
Meh screw razors, would rather not have very sharp blades near my jugular. :rotfl:
+Girlfriend likes the haven't shaved in a couple days look, that and I want a Dwarven beard.

This was my thought at first a "Gimmic" at best. But I asssure you the mach 3 delivers on its promise. Yes it's that good.

I believe what is good about the Mach 3 has more to do with the design than the three blades
1. The head pivots at one end and not the center. This helps put just the right amount of pressure on the skin to shave the hairs but not shave the skin.
2. The blade component is totally open at the back and this makes cleaning/rinsing of the blades very easy and fast.
In any case, I liked the Mach 3 back when I was beardless.
I have one of this: http://www.smallflower.com/dovo/black-handle-straight-razor-5-8-inch-razor.html
Xmas gift from my mother, since I allways wanted to shave with one of those. Took me a wyle to get used to, but yes, It is (possibly, imo) the best way to have a good shave!

That's why I prefer disposable razors. That way I can be a cheapskate and a sissy at the same time :D Just don't buy the very cheapest ones.

I do too, a pack of 10 high quality disposables is less then an 8 pack of replacement blades for a Gillette. I like the Wilkinson ones, they have the little thingy that cleans between the blades for you :)

I hope that 'little thingy' isn't what some guys often jokingly refer to as something that is so small your wife could pick her teeth with it :O:

I was using the Gillette 5 blade razor but switched to this:

Same great shave as the gillette but at half the price.

I, too, use the Gillette Fusion (5-blade). I got it as a birthday present last year and have been hooked ever since, as it is absolutely the best razor that I have ever had. However, the blade price is quite painful. I think I'll look into that one, AVG.

I would not say the Magnum is better than the Fusion. I think the Fusion is a far superior blade however you pay the price. The Magnum is not as smooth but the price is much lower and I can overlook that aspect. The Magnum does come with straight edge for hard to reach places.

Precisely why I went back the other way! One blade, close shave, no irritation.

If I have the time, I sit still and concenrate very hard until my facial hair falls off all by itself :D Takes a little practise though.
But about that magnum 5 ... Isn't there a battery powered razor for wet shaves? :hmmm: Nobody I know has ever bought it, and to me the very idea seems kinda stupid. I think it looks a bit like that magnum 5, but afaik, said razor has also a non-powered version.

I have used the powered one. It does a nice job. They claim the vibrations make the hairs stand up. So does sticking you finger into a socket. :o I have tried all of them really. My beard grows fast. I usually have 5 o'clock shadow by 0900:shifty: So, I have spent time looking at good shavers. As far as those damn Bic plastic ones.....run like hell. It is like shaving with a garden rake. Really, the best I have found is the Gillette 5 blade but it is very expensive. The Magnum is not as good but the price is very good IMO for the shave I do receive from the Magnum.

I rub sea salt on my face and put a dish of water on my bedside table.
Now set your alarm for 3am and go to bed.
When the alarm sounds, jump out of bed as quick as you can, the hairs should be thirsty at this point in time and be out looking for a drink of that water...now quickly tie a knot in them to prevent them jumping back inside your chin.

Yea disposables are cheaper but how many shaves do you get out of them two, three?
The Mach three blades will last me at least a week probably two or three weeks.
And (cant belive I'm saying this) what about the enviroment man !
AVGWarhawk

I get about three weeks out of both the Gillette and the Magnum. Those nice little strips they put on to indicate the blade is used up is nonsense. Both have them and both are useless.
As are as the environment, I remember seeing the USS Coral Sea getting cut up.
She was being cut up for razor blades from what I was told. So, we are thinking about the environment. :D

Gillette Fusion for me. I get a 5oclock shadow at 2pm :haha:
Safety razor for me.
Only the control of a single blade lets me get right up to the 'tash line.

One day a long time ago I was sick of growing a beard so I decided to go to a barbers to get it shaved off. Full treatment with the hot towels straight razor face massage etc. One of the best feelings and closest shaves I've ever had.

Oh no doubt a straight edged razor finely honed in the hands of skilled person can deliver the closest shave possible.
However in my hands in the morning when my eyes are barely open and half asleep is a recipie for disastor.

I checked with a Barber shop walking distance from house.
Under California State law, Straight Razors used in Barber shops must use disposable blades. Aids health issue.

Oh good lord. Wouldent a quick dip in "Barbacide" take care of that?
Besides if the barber is drawing blood with his impliments I'd consider another barber. :rotfl:
Never used a razor in my life (well, except to finish off my hair) and tbh I wouldnt feel very comfortable having something as sharp as a straight razor that near my throat... especially after seeing that barber movie thing with J. Depp. :hmmm:
I prefer White Gold and Wild Magic for the closest shave around.
When that's not appropriate:

= A better shave than most modern disposable razors I've tried. Takes a couple of goes to get used to it, mind, and a proper shaving brush and some decent soap etc also makes a surprising difference.
The Merkur safety razors are a quality bit of kit. I used to use a Gillette sensor jobbie until everyone started putting millions of blades on them. Then I bought a Merkur Safety Razor 23 and some extra Merkur Super blades and some decent shaving soap/cream and I haven't looked back. The missus got me a brush and I pinched one of her small rice bowls to lather the soap in.
All in all it does the job better than any of those cheapo space-age plastic things with the blades that cost the earth. Plus it will last for as long as I'm likely to need it, and with a practised hand it takes no more time to shave with it than any other razor.
Just have to remember to keep rinsing the blade and use the handle to follow the contours of your face to keep the angle of the blade right. I tend to use it with shorter strokes than the old Gillette because of the single blade; but has anyone ever actually shaved like you see in the adverts, with one swift sweep from ear to ear like some kind of crazy man? :O:
oh, yeah... about those disposable razors... death to the Bic face snagger!!

In 1973 I was in Port Kelang and came upon a piece of single bladed kit similar to the one above (I still have it and will photograph and post here if requested).
It cost about 10 pence in English, 20 cents US at the time of purchase.
It has an enscription/engraving on the top depicting an alligator or a crocodile being cut in half.....a constant reminder of how dangerous razor blades can be!! :o
