Ok, Your thoughts please gentlemen;

There i am cruising along 15 kts in my type 9, full load as i have just left Bergen AF 87 bound for AE 27. 4 Catalina pby's jump me and i dive the boat, 3 of the catalinas bombs miss me but the 4th takes out my Port Rudder Destroyed and Stern Dive Planes Destroyed.

Ok, 2 things.

Do i continue with the damage, i seem to have mobility and diving seems slower but thats all.

If that sort of thing happens again, how should i avoid it. I called dive, ahead full and maintained course. Would it help if i turned to dived to avoid attack.

Cheers

In depending of your game realism.. if you're playing at 100% or usually you come back to your port without using Esc teleport.. I really suggest return and repair damages.

It can happen, what is your playing year ?

The main defence is dive as soon as possible upon air sighted is called. Anyway you was been unluckly for the extreme air dropped bombs accuracy!

..nothing.. if you take care of your stern! I mean, just hope a depth charge/aircraft attack or cannon shot doesn't damage the rest!

'41 is pretty early.. a weird attack! normally I can see them after '43-'44.

However, with 54% of realism you can always return to your base just hitting Esc, if you like it. Thus, even you will damaged entirely you can always come back. It would have been different if you were playing at 100%: in this case you must sail to your base because the magic Esc teleport is disabled.

Return to base. Type IX is slow to dive, especialy with destroyed dive planes. :D You probably have some hull damage, which reduces your max depth.

When I spot a plane, I crash dive and after I'm completely submerged, I change course for about 30 degrees.

Agreed....wait until you are below the surface before changing course, the AI cannot detect your course change from the air.

You do run the risk of an off target bomb hitting you though.

From the books ive read, the tactic when attacked from aircraft would be, if possible (spotted in time) position your boat so you present the smallest sillhoette to the attacker... i.e either turn toward it or away from it on the course the aircraft is approaching from ...do not offer a broad-side view to the pilot.....crash dive then hard rudder when submerged to give yourself a chance.

as i say, only manouver your boat on surface if no other option exists....dive, dive dive!!!!

oh, and i'd return to port to repair damages, no point in risking a perfectly servicable crew and boat.
