Better for a first timer to watch it in German or English? Picked it up earlier along with my Stargate SG-1 collection, curious to know which one gives the better experience for a first timer. I'm not opposed to reading subtitles either, have been watching Hong Kong cinema for years.

I enjoy the German more than the english, as I don't mind subtitles. It gives a better feel for the movie. "Alarm!" will never sound the same again!;)

It's generally better to watch movies or television series in their original language. (Although I think in Das Boot the actors synchronised themselves for the english version?)
Since you already said you don't mind reading subtitles you simply have to watch it in German :)

Everything sounds cooler in German.

"All engines back full" sounds like an order to retreat. Allemaschinegrossefahrtzurreckt sounds like the order for a legion of cyborgs to blow up everything. :DL

Go for the German. I can't listen to it in English, it just doesn't sound right to me, though it does sound funnier.:DL

the guy who plays the second lt. in german he has a reasonably high pitched voice, the english dub is WORSE! bloody annoying, sounds like he's got some sort of testicle constrictor....
also i've found the english dub is really quiet yet the sound effects are still really loud.

german all the way, and to be hardcore german subtitles!!!

anybody listed to the audio commentry on the disk? its actually pretty good.

They did, and that's why I prefer the German version. Of course, being German myself I have no need for subtitles either :) I just don't like the way they pronounce their English - sound a bit like your stereotypical German with speech impediments. Maybe a native speaker of English will be bothered even more by it. Go for the German original and use subtitles ;)

The actor is Martin Semmelrogge, an extroverted and lively actor, known for his outstanding voice. He was also a few years here in prison because of numerous offenses and lived for a few years in the U.S.. He is acting in Germany often on stage.

Critique aside you will be supprised at the difference between the two versions, German with subtitles vs Dubbed English.

The dialog is really different.

I'd also say the best is the German with subtitles, partly because I hate dubs, partly because my hatred is justified.

Quite right! Actually, I once had to translate passages of the film from German into English as part of a university course. The differences were amazing and the translation often failed to capture the original flair (something inherent to almost all translations).
Apart from that, I think the best version of DB is still the book in its German original (just finished reading it for about the 5th time :)).

I'm another vote for native German. The English subtitles in the Director's cut are much better than the ones in the Uncut version, but neither one can compare to hearing the dialog in its original German.

Definitely best in German. I had to anyway, need the subtitles, lol :yeah:

For a more surrealistic effect, try Spanish. Or French. :)

In French it would sound like Porn Movie. :har::har::har:

:yep: German.

The dubbed version is too "cleaned up". For a real laugh watch it in the dubbed English version with the subtitles on - huge difference!

Also make sure that sooner or later you see the 5-hour 'Uncut' version.
