View Full Version : disable reflections?
i have a Dell D620 notebook that runs SH III quite smoothly. the only prob is that the reflections are all messed up, the lookouts have no binocs and there is no fog >.<
now the reflections really slow down the PC, is there a way to disable them?
their all distorted anyways so theres no point to having them, all they do is kill my framerate
i have the latest drivers installed and did all i could.

well i turned off most of the water reflections for my sh3/gwx3 on my laptop since it has some odd graphical glitch where all the relfections were bunched up into the bottom left corner of the screen (intel 4500MHD integrated vid card), but apart form solving that particular glitch it had no effect whatsoever on game performance still 50-60fps.
The engine will still load up the reflection models so the system resources are still being used wether the reflections are visible or not. Oddly sh4has no such problems despite being on the same engine, who knows...
Since there doesnt seem to be a single switch to turn off all water reflections/refractions you have to do it manually for every single object in game!!

Heres where somebody more knowledgeable comes along and tells me there is a big fat on/off switch for all the reflections!
Anyway, heres a brief how-to for disabling object refections.
1:download s3d.
2:find the .dat for the object whose reflections you want to remove (in this case i chose a type7c sub)

3:find the node that starts with relfect_????????, open it and go to the waterreflection child node and as shown change the reflect and refract values to 0

4:In the case of a subs reflections you`ll also have to repeat the above steps for the conning tower which is a seperate object (in the objects folder, turm7c_1.dat for example), oh and the deck gun (in the subguns.dat in the library folder)
As you can see its a right royal pain in the ass to disable reflections for just a single sub model, so to do it for everything in game will really give you a headache.
I suggest just doing it for those reflections that annoy you the most (in my case this was the sun and the subs own reflections, everything else i could live with).
Personally i quite like the look of the sea without reflections...

Good luck sailor:salute:
Hi Flakmonkey,
please check PM. Thanks.
Cheers, LGN1
Flakmonkey, what file did you modify to turn off the sea reflections?
I have the same problem in fps at periscope and external views, and turning off water reflections (almost absent due to my poor video card) might help..
thanks!

There isnt a single file to turn them off, each object in game has a reflection node in its corresponding .dat file which must be altered as shown in the above posts. (the dat files for ships can be found in the sea folder in your sh3 directory,)
I made a small mod a while ago to turn off reflections for the sun/clouds and a couple of the most popular uboat types, to alleviate the symptoms of an intel specific gfx glitch where the reflections would flicker and appear distorted.
The mod can be used with non intel cards too, even though they dont have that specific glitch.

thanks, I've an Intel indeed
