View Full Version : Through the Gibraltar in '44
I'm in the Med, it's 31 Aug 1944 and I just got the message that my base has changed to Trondheim. I'm currently on patrol around Sicily, with very few torpedoes left.
Has anyone went through the Gibraltar at that time? Any tips? What to expect? :hmm2:

Seems like an unrealistic request since none of the U-Boats ordered into the Med ever left it. My advice would be to get as close on the surface as you can before submerging and to hug the African coastline as much as possible.
You might wanna sneak a few extra oxygen canisters aboard. Everytime I've done a Gibraltar run I'm almost turning blue by the end. :D
I've done the run into the med and Torplexed has given good advice. There are a lot of DD's and patrol boats so you will need to go at night and stay as close to Africa as possible.

Hopefully the snorkel will be of some use. :DL
It was easy the last time I passed through in early '42 - flank speed on surface.

Wait for a stormy night. Heavy rain low vis and sneak through.

Not sure if that'll work in 1944 environment when every Allied ship larger than a rowboat has a radar set. :hmmm:
It definitely wouldn't work. It's too narrow to escape radar detection.

Good luck... everytime I attempt to go throught Gibraltar I get a cdt.
I'm making a slow but steady progress. most of the time I'm submerged because of the aircrafts. Now I'm 20km from the entrance to the Strait, with a lot of patrols around. I was overrun by a task force, and one destroyer passed directly over me. I thought he detected me but it was just a coincidence.
I'm not going to surface again but will continue at 220m. The air supply should last, and I should be out of the Strait within 24h.

2 knots with charged batteries and a full supply of air should see you through....good luck http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
Thanks mate!
Good thing that the currents aren't modeled in the game. :D

This is one example why i always carry 4 homing torpedoes as soon they are available.

Why is it in game, when it's an unrealistic request from BdU?
But ... I feel (if you play 100% realism) you will not get through and this will be the end of your carreer.
Anyway Meduza I wish you a lot of succes!
Befehl ist Befehl!!! :arrgh!:

For some reason I don't realy like the homing torps. I usualy carry one in the stern tube, which I get by default. Late in the game I prefer steamers for their long range. :DL

Thanks mate!
Anyway, I made it, all the way to Trondheim. :yep: It's good to be back in Atlantic.
Naturally, since I spent all torpedoes back in Mediterranean, along the way I encountered a large number of convoys, unescorted ships and carrier task force. All I could do is just sit there and watch them go by. :damn:
Still, 58000t is nice result...
At the end I was treated with this:

Great work Meduza! :yeah:
Did you go 8 meters surfaced, through Gibraltar?
And what a beautiful image!

No, I spent the whole time through the Strait (almost 2 days :o) at about 250m. I went to snorkel depth once, to replenish the air supply.
And what a beautiful image!
Thanks!

Looks like you took a bit of damage there :o

Yes, it was an aircraft attack near Ireland, probably with rockets. Destroyed the radar antenna and attack periscope. And ruined the paint. :D
